How to CLONE YOURSELF In DaVinci Resolve 16 No Green Screen - Tutorial

  • In today's tutorial for DaVinci Resolve 16, we're going over how to clone yourself without a green screen. Everything I show today can be done in the free version of DaVinci Resolve. Stick around for the later parts of the video to learn some more advanced techniques, and even how to move the camera with a clone shot which is notoriously troublesome, but you can be the judge for how I did at the end.

    Additional notes:
    Hope you guys enjoyed the skit, and can look past the out of focus parts, my fiance tried her darnedest (she's not too interested in camera stuff) and she wasn't up for a second take. That kinda stuff drives me crazy but I figure good is better than perfect in this situation so I'm hoping you got a kick out of it.
    For the moving shots you could also achieve this effect with a motorized slider, and honestly I think a slider with some type of consistent counter weight system could get the job done. In a pinch you could also maybe get it done with an egg timer, just as long as the motion is smooth.
    I hope you folks are liking these tutorials with 3 examples. It drives me nuts when a tutorial only goes over an effect in ideal circumstances, because 90% of the time that's not what you're working with so I figure showing different situations that elevate in difficulty help give you the trouble shooting skills to make these effects for your projects.
    No references for this video today, but try it outself and let me know how you get along

    Thank you for you help! I have a question. Where do you focus? Do you use manual and keep the same distance (I dont think that's possible without losing the subject out of focus? I know that it's a minor thing but when I use eyefocus and shallow DOF the blurry parts can ruin the credibility of the clone trick. Or do you use like f10 or what is you advice? Thank you in advance

    You mentioned how to made a sophisticated version with back and forth dialogue. Is a version like that still a possibility?

  • @usernamenotvisibIe
    @usernamenotvisibIe Před 2 lety +1

    Nathan, I'm stumped! When I make a square around the subject (using pen tool) that is going to be tracked, everything outside the square turns black. I added the alpha output and connected it as you instructed. for some reason all parts outside of the square I create with the pen tool and track are black. please advise.

    • @NathanCarterVids
      @NathanCarterVids  Před 2 lety +1

      You need to change your matte settings. The 2 little buttons beside the pen tool

      @@NathanCarterVids Arrrrgh! lol...still happening. Irregardless of what combination of those two buttons, it goes from everything black to inside the box is my image but outside is black, to the opposite...but no combination keeps my image complete without filling with black. @@NathanCarterVids I figured it out! The problem was ME lot paying close attention to how you stacked each clip on the timeline making sure the videos are placed over one another throughout the length of the mask that will be tracked in the color page! I'll be making a short video with this effect for a film competition in a couple weeks...when done I'll send it your way. Thanks.

    Hi Nathan, great video. Sorry new to video editing so this may be obvious but why do you have to track the shot? What would happen if you didn’t? Thanks

    • @NathanCarterVids
      @NathanCarterVids  Před 3 lety +1

      Great question. So if you don't track the shot in this particular case the power window wont move, so she would appear as the camera rotates, but it wouldn't follow her so it'd look weird for sure.

    Can you use 'shot match' here to align the colors. or is this not possible because of the power windows. thx 4 the vid

    • @NathanCarterVids
      @NathanCarterVids  Před 2 lety +1

      You could absolutely make some corrections within the power window, though for this effect I'd highly recommended using the same lighting setup for each take.

  • @JarredCordova
    @JarredCordova Před 4 lety

    Aye just did an affect like this in my last short! This was awesome! I had to do this whole sequence frame by frame, the auto key framing did not work unfortunately so it was tedious and I will never do that to myself again... I swear I almost gave up haha. I found a pretty good work flow tho I might have to throw my hat in the ring for this effect!

      @NathanCarterVids  Před 4 lety

      That's great. Dude do it. I'd like to see your method. I found the moving shot to be a bit of a puzzle. It's just so hard to keep it totally consistent. Lots of little shifts.

      @@NathanCarterVids I have this basic like 180 degree swivil I took the last frame of the move of the clear room and made that a still, and basically tracked that across. I honestly should have tracked it, but I just hand animated the track, and added in a motion blur trying to match the direction. The final product looks a little robotic but it's so brief and for YT that I had to move on to save time. I'll be using green screens from now on lol.
