Shostakovich 'United Nations on the March' ("Thousands Cheer" - 1943)

  • This is being uploaded on 'United Nations Day' - 24th October - to introduce a piece to mark the day that many may not know. Shostakovich wrote the music for nearly 20 Soviet films, including a 1933 Stalinist propaganda drama entitled "Counterplan." The title song was to become famous in various guises and the composer used the piece again in several more of his compositions. In 1943 it provided the finale to an MGM musical comedy entitled "Thousands Cheer," a war-time morale booster for American troops and their families. It was given the title "United Nations on the March" and was sung by Kathryn Grayson and a large male chorus conducted by Jose Iturbi.
