- Updating a hardmodded Xbox 360, such as a JTAG or RGH console, can be a little daunting the first time you try it. This tutorial hopes to make the process easier to follow along with. This will go through the process of setting up a FAT32 formatted USB drive, downloading the necessary files, dumping the NAND, building an updated NAND, updating the console, and finally installing Avatar Data.

This inspired me to hook up my RGH slim 360 and update it to the last dash I'll ever have to do on this model. I had the updflash sitting in the XEbuild folder on my PC for a few years now. I used to use Flash360, but it doesn't have the ability to dump the CPU key into a text file like this app by Swizzy. It was pretty fun creating your own update files via cmd line with all the special parameters back in the day, but the UI in XEbuild just makes it super fast and easy. Thanks Mario!

I finally made the plunge and upgraded my xbox360 phat to RGH. I actually started this back in 2008'ish and never finished, had the cpu key and dvd key from xell already and never finished the upgrade. I got inspired to finish this gaming with my kids and FINALLY have Aurora installed. It was hit and miss for a minute when a RGH cable came loose and caused a short, hahah. I now have a slim and halo reach LE waited to be upgraded too.

just wanted to say if anyone is having trouble specifically when going through mario's tutorial and your system still says it needs an update and if its on the correct dashboard already because you probably bought your 360 off someone else and now you're havinng this issue? what i did was did what mario did towards the end put the $$ytemupdate folder on the root of your flashdrive/external hdd and makesure your profile is on your oem/xbox hdd. Boot your system up and decline any immediate update prompts. go to your normal dashboard. now plug in your flash/external then wait 5 -15 seconds to wait for that Proceed Message and you should be set to go. ive been stuck on this for an hour figuring out what to do but i got it. *So yeah this is for people who already are on the latest firmware and still get updates for no reason* Happy to help for that it did. This was useful for me to backup my NAND and CPU key, but I really don't know if I must check one of those boxes (CR4, SMC+, Clean SMC...). Although none of them is checked by default, you said it's important to know which specific method was used in order to avoid problems. The only thing I know for sure is that this is not RGH3, so I decided to stop and not take any risks. What I think I really should do now is to update Aurora, which I haven't ever done yet. Thank you!
Usually in my experience, taking the backup NAND created should populate what patches and such it was built with.
Mine didn't have anything selected either. I proceeded without changing anything and the console updated successfully!

Does this work for downgrading to an earlier dashboard revision? If you wanted to downgrade back to the NXE dash? Do Coronas support NXE?

ive been in the rgh game fo years, and honestly after so long i forgot how to update lol. i got an error mesage on mine saying, "update now or you console may be orrrupted" and since then had an error that stated 'disc unreadable' every time id boot even though there was no physical disc inserted. re flashing my nand seemed to fix the problem. thanks!

Mario, Thanks for making this awesome tutorial, I pretty much new to Xbox360 homebrew scene, and I just bought Xbox360 slim RGH about a two weeks ago, I follow your previous tutorial to setup any basic stuff like Aurora , dashlaunch and such, I notice that dashboard on my xbox is too old, so I decide to take risk for update, about 3 days ago I follow this new tutorial video to update my system and I was so excited and follow your tutorial carefully, only confuse me that RGH 3 option is not check by default on the application to flash NAND, I only see Glitch 2 was check by default, so I check RGH 3 option to be more precise same as your video , I' don't know Xbox360 I bought is RGH 2 or 3, story short I succesfully update the system it restart twice and boot up normally, and I was also succeed update the avatar thing, It's so relief at first because I'm so nerveous doing this update, later next day, my console suddenly turn off and it get stuck when I boot up the system not showing any signal on my screen, unfortunately I messed up my system, so I sent back to the seller and today he replace my slim console , and I notice from dashlaunch, the motherboard is now different than previously was Trinity, now the motherboard is Corona, and the dashboard is even older, is it safe for me to attempt update the dashboard again?
Yep, just make sure you use the proper settings for your console when updating.

It installed 190Mb in the flash drive, does that mean that I always need it while I run my XBOX, or may I just remove it and use my old flashes as I used to?

You can just rename it within the profile settings itself, unless it's a Live account.

Thank you, I have an rgh with dual nand and I can’t get the rgh nand to connect to Xbox live so I can use a stealth server.. would updating it to the latest dash allow me to connect to Xbox live and finally use a stealth server? (My retail nand with a retail storage device is works not problem) thanks in advance!
@MrMario2011 thanks for your efforts - your vids help a lot! Unfortunatly i do have an question regarding the procedure described in this howto. Following the steps brings me up to the point where i do have to choose the settings in J-Runner/XeBuild (upper right corner) to create the new updated flash file. Since i do have a corona/4GB slim version with a yellow x360run glitch, i have no idea which options to choose. J-runner checks the "Glitch2" option by itself, but the options to the right (WB 2k / CR4 / SMC+ / RGH3 / Clean SMC) are not selected at all. Shall i just keep it that way? In other words: Shall i create the XeBuild with Glitch2-option and no selection in the WB 2k / CR4 / SMC+ / RGH3 / Clean SMC column?
It sounds like Glitch2 is all that's needed, but if that's incorrect be sure you are prepared to unbrick your console.
Hey Mario, thanks again for another great RGH video. I am trying to update my RGH that I did from watching your old RGH tutorial. I have been out of it in a while, and suddenly got the itch to pull out my old xboxes and get them finished up. I am having a bit of trouble on one of them though. If I format it on the xbox, I cant copy files to it. The xbox makes a few random folders, one of them is named with two weird chars so they show up as squares. If I format with rufus or any other way on the computer, xexmenu does not notice it, and they get deleted.
Older dashboards format like that, which is why I showed two methods of formatting. You'll need to use the PC way to do so.

I found my old RGH 360 and wanted to install some GOD-Games. But the 32GB Limit is really annoying. I heard that MS removed the 32 USB-Limit when sending the Console in retirement. So for this i would need to update the System, right? Is your tutorial here the right one to do that?

Hey! i’m trying to follow this tutorial but when i plug in my usb on the xbox i have to configure it, and it recognizes it as “memory unit” and then it only gives me the options to clear the cache or delete the storage but it won’t let me format it the way you show in the video. when i plug it into my pc it’s FAT32 and the storage is full, so i tried just deleting everything and putting the NAND flasher on it but when i put it back into the xbox it makes me have to configure it again.
Also, does the xex menu show up with the NAND flasher or is that something i need to have on the xbox already? sorry im super new to this stuff thank you for all the help😢
That means you need a dashboard update as that's the old formatting. Just format as FAT32 on PC and use a program on the Xbox to browse it.

The Glitch part has automaticly check and filled out? Or I'll check something myself? The RGH3 (the right section) has no one select after load the bin file for me. Only Glitch2 has selected, not anymore. Thanks, for your answers :)

@@MrMario2011 What do you mean? Xbox 360 S Model 1439. Previously Dashlaunch 3.07, but I'll updated to the latest version 3.21. It says: Board: Corona, Flash: Corona, Type: Glitch 2, Kernel: 2.0.16747.0 The Latest Aurora 0.7 installed. So the right section of Jrunner is cloud to me. How i know, what do you choose. After load the bin nothing selected only Glitch 2 on the left side. SMC version: 2.05. CB type: Split. Does say you anything?

I don't have a way to access the USB drive cause i downgraded to blades at some point lol, so now i don't have any way to launch an XEX off the USB drive, is there any workaround to flash it?
Boot into XeLL, dump NAND via Ethernet, build new NAND, then flash it via XeLL with USB.

I need help. After updating the Xbox, it now refuses to read discs. Please solve it
I followed this tutorial to a T on my Corona 4GB and it got stuck at 8% when flashing the nand to the Xbox. I let it like that for hours, but no dice, so I forced a power off. Now, it gives me Error 79 when turning it on.
I'm now waiting for a Raspberry Pico to flash the NAND backup.
I don't know if I got unlucky or did something wrong. I didn't changed anything in Jrunner
Those Corona 4 GB consoles do not have reliable flash storage unfortunately. Doesn't sound like anything you did inocrrect.

Mr. Mario, I followed it step by step, now it freezes at the default 360 menu, xbonline was already deployed and I think this might be the problem, I can't access aurora either, it's assigned to Y and it freezes when I try to open it up, any suggestions?
Also when I try to open up xex menu via the guide button it freezes the console.

Fixed it, powered the console on and pressed the eject button after one second, the console runs now!
This might help a lot of people that have plugins installed and mess up the console after the update.
Hi, im stuck, usb drive(fat32) plugged in with $$ystemUpdate on it, but update message does not appear. Drive is visible in system settings and file browser (xex files). Any suggestions? EDIT - SOLVED - noupdate option in dashlaunch was enabled :)

Hey Mr.Mario I have got a problem I have an avatar update and dashboard that are comaptible they are for the same verison but my problem is that when I click on customize avatar nothing happens which is a problem I have multiple avatars that I copied to the xbox and I already got Avatar Items on it from the games that I have on it the dashboard verison is 2.0..17349.0 and the 360 is an JTAG I had been searching the entire internet for a solution and I couldn't find one hopefully you can help me thanks you so much for the efforts

That's tied to your profile, not your Dashboard or NAND. It won't be impacted.

You probably didn't set the proper settings for your console. You would need to solder in a NAND programmer and restore the backup you made.

Nothing in this video requires a network connection on the console.

huge fan from your channel i got a bit of a rare glitch i think? some reason the xbox 360 rgh 2 will not boot up when i have my harddrive plugged in when i unplug the harddrive it boots up fine and even show after the flash it got on the new software update with succes! you know any fix i can do to fix this on my xbox 360 so i can still have my xbox 360 harddrive plugged in.

i did had a spare internal xbox 360 harddrive laying around and that works fine when i plug it in the console you think i am better off formatting the other harddrive by opening it up the casing and get it to work that way?@@MrMario2011

how do I know if I have rgh3 or cr4 or jrunner checks everything for me automatically?
Not bad though you could taught them how get all information cpu key kv etc by shutting down the console and pressing the eject button. At the bottom of the screen with be an ip address. Key that ip address to a pc connected on the same network and you can download all the files you need. I mean you even do a nanflash from that screen too.
I have a video covering that exact method already, although not everyone can or use their network. Plus you cannot flash a Corona 4GB console through XeLL.

Yes, it absolutely matters for your specific console or else you'll brick it.

Part of it is just the satisfaction of being on the latest update, another part is if you're wanting newer features that were introduced in later updates. At one point they began to format USB drives differently, which is why I showed it on the console and on the PC here.

Hello, Im currently having this issue where i go to the xbox support page to download the system update and put it on the usb but when i try to download it, an 404 error appears saying the file might have been moved somewhere else, is this because microsoft decided to delete the update? or is it my internet? help i just need to do the avatar update :(
Edit: I was able to find the update at a website called digiex, would you happen to know if its safe to use the file archived in there, i m asking because i wouldnt know if it's been tampered with or something

Kinect does not display content - XBOX 360 w/ 17559
Recently, I bought an Xbox 360 RGH and LT. This Xbox came with a Kinect and an outdated version of the Kernel, using the FreeStyle dashboard. Although it came with a Kinect, the device was not working as expected: it is recognized by the Xbox and allows me to communicate with it through audio, but it does not capture my movements (or showing every image content).
While researching solutions on the internet, I discovered that this could be happening because the system is outdated. So, I updated the Xbox to version 17559 and, even after the update, the Kinect still does not capture my movements or display a feedback screen indicating the camera tracking is working . What could it be?
Some observations:
- My Xbox is the Corona 16MB, with Dashboard 17559 w/ Freestyle 3.
- When I start tests with the Kinect, the Xbox informs me that the Kinect will restart, but nothing happens, or when it does, it displays nothing related to the Kinect.
- I've already tested it on games that require Kinect functionality, but it still didn't work.
- There is a red light being shown on it (of the sensor). It seems that it is working partially. Is it a hardware or software problem? It is recognized by the Xbox and captures my audio, but it just doesn't display the image.
i have falcon 16mb and its rgh2 what choose in xebuild cr4 or smc or rgh3 ?
If you have a glitch chip then it is not RGH3. If the console is RGH 1.2, SMC+ is recommended to enable.

I also have that weird issue of the DVD drive reading discs as Video/Audio DVD, I know you would say it isn't worth fixing but I got a lot of discs to burn, can't run or burn them on an older firmware :D
Actually though I noticed that the DVD drive key is 12345678 repeated 4 times XD
And when I reflash the original NAND the discs read well but some games are too new to be ran on 16203...
So I don't know what the exact cause of this, I even tried 17526 as well and it fails to read discs, treats them like blank Video/Audio DVD or something...

not sure if the RGH is 1.2 or 2 (it's recognized as Glitch2), all I know is that it's a Cool Runner CORONA chip with a PHAT/SLIM switch, it was PHAT but I switched to SLIM before I do anything...
So basically the OSIG was wrong in the NAND so I changed it to 1175 and also disabled FCRT Check and all's well :D
Question: I redownloaded the Avatar Update (Avatar's were NOT greyed out... but I was troubleshooting getting Indie Games to work) and when I did that, my profile picture will not show up on the sign-in screen (only shows the Panda PFP) but when I sign into my profile it shows my original PFP? Any way to fix this to get it to display consistently
Closest I've run into that was fixed by connecting that profile back to Xbox Live.

hi MrMario I had Xbox360 E with Dash 17489 and attempt to Update to 17559 base on your tutorial. after Updating the Nand My device is not botting at all. there was no error in the process. only difference was the RGH3 part that was not active in my J-Runner. what should i do now ? can you help me?
You didn't set the console settings accurately for your specific console. You need to wire up a NAND programmer and flash a working backup.

I was able to dump backup flash to the console with SD card reader wiring. Now my console is booting. But my dashboard is the old one 17489 .
How can I find my current console setting ? Obviously the jrunner detection from dump flash was not correct ?

You probably selected the wrong options for your console, I mentioned to make sure you pick the right ones.
@@MrMario2011 My bad. I was not sure whether to select R-JTAG or aud_clamp in JTAG option but it allowed me to select them both simultaneously
