I watched so many videos and heard so many stories but never knew about Welles. What an amazing young man.

I'm the same. He really was an amazing Man.
So sad that he intended to leave his job, so that he could work for the fire service, as he wanted to help people.
It just shows that his family did a great job in raising him.

No idea how this isn’t a movie. Such a beautiful story. A man could’ve escaped time and time again and instead he chose, over and over again, to keep helping others.

@@Indiana_Jones-Z nahhh, you can make the ending positive. The documentary has a good ending. He wanted to be a fireman and his dream came true. He also sacrificed himself for others and he’s Christian. There are many positive angles to take for the conclusion.

I remember months after 9/11 someone told me a story about a mysterious guy with a red bandana who helped saving people , I kept up with the story, and I am very very pleased with this documentary to get to know all the facts. Some people have unbelievable courage and are really angels on earth. Welles was one of them. A true angel on earth.
Not downplaying anything! But I'm sure it's easier to achieve what he did if he didn't believe the tower would ever collapse. As long as he knew where the exit was he probably thought it was cake as long as the path remained open.
Yeah but it's also a bunch of lies in this video such as 13:03 which makes no sense because if a airplane is coming towards you, you can't see what's written on the side of the tail and he also said that same tail then got stuck in the office doorway when the plane crashed through the wall. I'm pretty sure they the doorway and all would be busted completely out if a airplane crash into a wall in your office lol. He got to much going on in what would've been a split second which is another tell tell sign that his story is untrue.

The real irony is that when this was released, the director mentioned that even though Gwyneth Paltrow had never heard of Welles or this story before, their families were already linked in a very special way. He asked Welles's parents if they would be okay with her narrating and found out from Welles's dad that his own brother (Welles's uncle) had been good friends with Gwyneth's late dad, the director Bruce Paltrow, when they were young twenty-somethings and doing theater together in NYC decades before. He actually briefly dated Gwyneth's mom, Blythe Danner, and upon realizing they weren't right for each other decided to introduce her to his buddy Bruce, and the rest was history. Bruce and Blythe would go on to be married 30+ years until Bruce's untimely death. So as a "thank you" for doing the film, Welles's Uncle was able to give Gwyneth old pictures of her dad (whom she was very close to) that she had never seen before. Think about that. There are literally billions of people on this planet, but of those billions only one person introduced her parents to each other and that one person happens to be the uncle of the man she is asked to narrate a documentary about. Pretty special how it all connected.

I am not an American, but every year, on Sept 11, I go to CZcams and search videos such as this to remember each and every one who have died and survived. And also to pay my respects to all the uniformed men and women, civilian heroes, and the silent heroes that we don't know about until now who became part and have sacrificed their lives on that fateful day. May we not forget them and the love for humanity they have showed. May God bless us all. 🌹

Thank you. I'm a native New Yorker and remember going to Europe a few months after 9/11. In Paris, I was told by a few locals that "America had it coming". I was appalled and 9/11 was still raw. Only a few months had passed since 9/11. Almost got in a fight but took the higher ground and told him he'd be speaking German if it weren't for us "Stupid Americans" saving their asses in the big War. Shut him up pretty quickly. 25:05 We went to Amsterdam after and the people were so understanding and couldn't be more supportive during that time. The difference was really telling. I'll never go back to Paris again.

I was with my new bride at the time and we were very respectful. Stayed chill, dressed well, spent a lot of dough, and my wife even speaks French. That's how we knew what they were saying, thinking we didn't understand. Your right, but it just left such a bad vibe in our minds. Especially after experiencing the warmth from the people of The Netherlands!

20 years later and this is the first I’ve ever heard of this story. I feel extremely grateful that this popped up in my feed. Welles should have a movie made about this. It can teach an entire generation of the definition of what it is to be a true American.
Normally I'd proably agree with you about making a movie, but in this case, I think this documentary is all we need. (I can't even watch the fictional films that have been made about 9/11; maybe that's because I'm from the area and it was real enough for me that I don't need them, when all the actual footage and audio speaks for itself). I think Welles' story can teach us more than just about being an American; it can teach us about family, true character, bravery, sacrifice, and caring for others. RIP Welles.

@@RudolphRedNoseDeerI have a story to tell you I watched this documentary 2 days ago while watching I was about 10 minutes in and my screen went black for about 2 seconds when my screen came back on it was 30 minutes in at the part where he died I didn’t know how Becuase I didn’t touch my phone at all but it did and I could felt a presence in my room all night. After I went to bed I had a dream it was a man in a red bandanna. I’m pretty sure he was with me that night

Greetings from southeast PA, Glad you made it. I was 12 and in 6th grade and I remember thinking, this must be what the apocalypse will feel like. In many ways it was the end of the world I suppose, what with all the changes that day brought about.

7/16/23 It's Red Bandana Day at Boston College as they play FL State and every bandana is emblazed with Welles. When the sports announcers explained what it signifies I looked it up and found this video. I didn't know about this amazing young man and hope his legacy continues to grow. His mom knew his life had meaning and that's why she didn't stop searching. Every school should know his story and have Red Bandana days and awards. It's wonderful that Welles lives on with so many children named after him.
When Welles received his first red bandana, his path was set. I believe that having that red bandana around his nose and mouth, it was really there so his parents would know how much he helped people in their hour of need, not all angels have wings :)

To think he made it down to lobby and actually had a chance to get out,yet he chose to go back up with the firefighters to try and rescue more people trapped on the 78th floor. Truly heroic. Fly high buddy.
Seeing his license, credit cards and Metro Card all recovered and with a crack in the same place on each card really got to me. You’re the definition of a hero, Welles. Rest in Peace.
And thats not insane to you? Towers made of steel and concrete didnt survive but plastic credit cards did? A terrorist passport miraculously survived without any damage. They were on the f-ing plane! No fire damage what so ever? Many heroes that day including their son but don't act like things that happened that day that are astronomically IMPOSSIBLE

This is the most motivational documentary I've seen about 9/11 heroes. He wasn't even a firefighter, but he still lived by their honor code. Thinking about other people's safety before himself. Just wow.
He had been a volunteer firefighter in his home town before leaving for new York
If you watch the documentary about The Woman Who Wasn't There, his parents are on it and they tell of his being a firefighter and that he hoped to be a firefighter again later in life after his business work in NY

What a Wonderful tribute. Also, if not for his father giving him the "Red Bandana", his sacrifice would never have been known. It was the red bandana that made it possible for the survivors to identify him.

Interesting little tidbit…..Tania Head also linked herself to Welles, right after 9/11. She said she was in the towers that day, & the “Man in the red Bandanna” saved her life, after she was severely injured. She was all over the media, gave tours of the 9/11 site, became President of the WTC survivor group, and even had a meeting with Welles parents and attended a memorial his family had for him…..and she made up the whole thing. She used another victim of 9/11 named David, & pretended he was her husband. Got away with it for years until the NYT uncovered her lies, after she kept dodging them for an interview. There’s a good documentary about it on YT, but what she did to Welles family & other survivors was as vile as it gets!
Movies about 9/11 or other human tragedy are lame. I'd rather buy a book about his life. What kind of person he was with his family and friends.

I truly lost it when I heard he was going to leave his job and become a firefighter.
Glad it's not just me. This story has always stuck with me, among many others, but what a strong man to sacrifice his own life to save others. I went to the 9/11 memorial in 2017 and visited his spot and cried like a baby. My condolences to his family and my congratulations for raising such an outstanding young man. 🙏

I've watched so many CZcams videos about that day, but today is the first time hearing and watching about Wells the man in the red Bandana. What an amazing man and gone far too soon. His story is beautiful and it brought many tears to my eyes. To his family it must have been such a tragic loss but you also must be so proud of what he did and sacrificed, I hope those memories have brought you some peace, your son is not just an angel in heaven but he was an angel here on earth first. It has just passed September 11, 2023 in my country (UK). I always spend the day watching things that unfolded that day of tragedy. I’m glad I took the time to watch this. It’s the least I could do when he gave his life to help others. I’ve always been quite the bandanna collector, especially whenI was younger & I still have all of them. Red is my favourite colour & red was the first one I had. Now, I will never look at a red bandanna the same again & they will always make me think of Welles & his family, plus the people he saved. I am in the UK & when 911 happened I’d just got in from 6th form (which is the same as studying in college, but at your school instead), I took a week off because I found there were 4 first responders trapped & I just could not get them out of my head. I did go to my evening job but there were two of us who knew Americans who were worried & at least we managed to keep the spirits up for each other, until we heard thankfully that they were all safe. I just constantly watched the news & my heart broke. I had just been in the USA a month prior to it happening & flew over New York 4 times in the space of 2 years. I just think you were also dignified & dealt with it amazing, if I’m allowed to say, if this doesn’t sound too rude, as your friend across the pond loves to America &I’m proud of you all!
I could not stop crying throughout this documentary. I want to send my condolences to the Crowther family. You raised an exceptional, selfless human being. Its not very often that we get to celebrate this type of human, especially in these days. Welles went to extreme lengths to save people. While today, others are going to extreme lengths to hurt others. I will never forget this beautiful soul, and his amazing family.

He was doing the job of a firefighter, so it makes perfect sense to honor him by naming him an honorary firefighter.
I’m getting choked up. Most things don’t hit me that way, but this is so touching.
I watched this as a son and thought, wow this guy was only a couple years older than me. What an example. Now I watched this as a father and hope I can raise my child as well they raised Welles.
My first job was babysitting for the Crowther family. Thanks to them, I got my BFA in Screenwriting and Film Theory and learned how to be tolerant of little boys who didn't want to go to bed.

It's 22 years later. I have just finished watching this incredible story. I want to say how BEAUTIFUL this is to me- and this family is simply amazing. What a strong, and admirable son ., and you just know that his kindness and strength were in his d.n.a., because his parents are lovely!! Welles' spirit lives on. The faith his mother carried in finding him never faulted, so this has instilled something in me, (incredible).....thank you Welles, for saving these people, never did you fear for yourself, and thank you all involved in telling this most-incredible story-
22 years later on this very day I found myself watching this video and at 8:46 I looked up to the sky with sadness but also a sense of peace. Live each day to the fullest like Wells did. May he and many others never be forgotten and R.I.P. 🇺🇸

I really thought that I had researched 9/11 pretty thoroughly, but this is the first time I remember learning about the Man in the Red Bandana. I'll wear my red bandana proudly in his honor.
Over the years I’ve watched dozens of 9/11 survivor accounts. While I have no personal connection to anybody in New York, or to any of the survivors and their families, I feel compelled to know their stories. It’s one of many ways these individuals will not be forgotten. Out of these heartbreaking stories many heroes emerged that day. I am absolutely baffled that I haven’t come across Welles‘ story until exactly 22 years later.
What an absolutely heroic young man! I can’t even imagine what his family has gone through. Thank you for sharing your story with us, difficult as it was. I am sure you got some comfort from getting so much positive feedback from so many people and agencies. Being recognized by the NYFD as an honorary firefighter is truly heartwarming!
What really strikes me is how the good in people triumphed over some of the most evil people ever on 9/11 and beyond. Those terrorists and their cronies may think they won that day. They did no such thing. A lot of angels were born that day. Welles was one of the largest angels. He certainly will be around forever!

Crying after putting myself in his parent's shoes. I would be so unbelievably proud but totally broken at the same time. His mom's dedication to finding him made me cry pretty hard and I would do the same exact thing if it were one of my girls

same. even here in south africa it was live on all our channels. i got home from work and sat down to watch the usual viewing at that time. i could not believe what i was witnessing. i will never forget it. so many lives lost, so much destruction. heartbreaking.
Same. I was 13, and had turned on the television before school by chance. Didn't realize at first that I was seeing the news, not a movie.
I just came home from school, I was 15 years old and lived in The Netherlands Europe, I was watching TV and the channel changed, I tried to change it back but every channel was showing the same twin towers, then I saw the second plane, and then I realized that it was Live. 😔

I thought I had seen all the news articles, documentaries and read all the stories about 9/11. This is most definitely an incredible story. Welles is the kind of human that we should all strive to be like. To all Welles' family and friends, I'm sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing his story.

This young man sacrificed his life for those strangers so they could continue to live on. He did it without knowing he'd be Remembered, that's a true good hearted man. I can't believe this is the first time I'm hearing this story as well. It should be talked about far more than it is.
Absolutely bawling. What an incredible human being. Holy cow. Just astounding. I cried the whole way through but for some reason the part where they said kids all over the country had been named for him broke me completely. What a beautiful tribute.

This world especially at its current narcissistic state needs him and more people like him. He is truly a special soul. A tiny part of me wishes he had thought of his parents and perhaps saved himself a little bit sooner, but noone could have anticipated the tower to collapse the way it did. Welles, you did good. Much much respect to Welles and mr&mrs Crowther from Malaysia.

Eeeh I’m pretty confident there were a few people expecting it to collapse the way it did. Unfortunately Welles was not privy to that memo….very said, and the monsters that cause him to lose his life should be tried for Treason and Hanged from the Tallest Tree for all to see….after seeing flight MU5735 on 03.21.2022 and realizing it crashed at the same exact speed, in the same plane, at the same trajectory as AU93 but yet MU5735 was able to recover tons and tons and tons more plane parts, as well as larger pieces and more of them, DNA recovered from the passengers and both black boxes recovered in 3.5 days….that’s more than AU93 and AU77 both combined….and these were apples to apples crashes. But the site recovery difference is far far far far far far beyond the margin of error

Never heard of Welles. I’m so glad I did now. Unbelievable story. Saved 10 lives, I wish he could also made it, this isn’t fair. He already was on the ground floor, if he would have arrived there 30 seconds earlier…..absolutely soul crushing.

I wish this story was more popular. This is a beautiful story. I totally understand why selfishly initially his loved ones wondered why he didn’t just get out, but now they honor his decision and bravery. This story needs far more attention because it’s a beautiful example of the hero’s on 9/11.
I was choked up the entire time but the part of his application to join the NYPD.. especially when his dad quoted him saying: "Yeah dad but, money is not everything. My life was meant for something much more important".... that's when I broke. He is one of those people that leaves a mark on the world. Thank you Welles.
I cried since the sister's story about her three goals till the end. I've never been in the US but when I think of that country I picture a guy like Welles and a family like his. What a great nation.

This is by far the best story to come out of that tragic day. All parents need to show this to their kids so that they understand what it means to be selfless, brave and helping of others. This is what humanity is all about. It isn’t just about money…Welles was so right. We need to let real heroes like Welles be the example for our young people, not these so called “influencers” of today. Heroism isn’t simply influence, it’s action.
Thank you Welles....please continue to guide people to the light, in this world and the next.

Crowther was an extraordinary man. I can't imagine the hope, and later, the immense gratitude he bestowed on these people. Crowther's parents must be incredibly proud.
It's amazing they were able to piece this story together and figure out it was this specific guy. I wish he would have made it. The world needs more people like him.
Think of how many lives he has changed. Think of how many people have molded their lives to be like him. The world has gained many more Welles, thanks to Welles.
What a sad story.. I'd never heard of him. What a man. And the fact only he managed to find an escape route makes me believe that from the day he was born,that was his destiny. Its absolutely devastating for his parents and sisters (who my heart breaks for)but their beautiful,brave son was the Shepard leading them to the light,and God would have rewarded Him for his selfless courage.
