    Ever wondered why we drive on the left in Britain? Actually, there is is one place where we drive on the right. The Savoy Hotel lies on an an ancient spot in London which was called Sauoy many years ago. The Strand was more of a muddy lane in those days. Now it remains the only place in Britain where we drive on the right. The roundabout at the end is that on which taxi cabs base their turning circle. It has to be able to get around that circle.

    A pedant writes... Russell Lane (B1453) in Barnet, where it is two separate lanes, has two connecting bits of road where one drives on the right.
    But cracking stuff, all the same!

      +Nick Soteriou Ha! Yes...Thanks. I do keep finding little inaccuracies in a few of the films but then again, you should hear some of the stuff the your guides tell you! Cheers again! (I was hoping no one would notice!)

    We have been driving on the left since the time we were part of the Roman Empire ,one explanation was that in Roman cities it used to get more than a little congested with traffic ,and being as most Romans were right handed they found that by driving on the left the populace were safe from the charioteers Whips as well bringing in a system that would stop the chaos of the overcrowded city roads .And the only reason that you drive on the right is that at the turn of the 20th century you produced cars where some had steering wheel on the left,some had the wheel on the right and some in the middle which caused absolute chaos in some towns and cities.But then along came Henry Ford who produced his car with a wheel on the left, and being as most cars on the roads were Fords it made sense to drive on the right and apart from driving on the right or left follow a system we have been using for 2 thousand years in Britain.

      Well I like this explanation. I must admit I've heard a few and now I don't know which one to believe! Sounds reasonable enough to me. I don't think I do it justice in this video. It's one of my early ones when I had a peanut for a brain.

    I’d heard that because most people are right-handed the horse whip would be a safe distance away from pedestrians.

    horses are mounted & dismounted on the lefthand side so the kerbside developed infrastructures to cater for the riders carts & carriages started using these infrastructural aswellhence it was more practically for england to drive on the right there was a time everyone drove on the right you only have to look at vintage cars of the 1800s

    Thanks for the videos again and again but especially today! I found out Lalique's fountain!!! The info about it was given to me as a BD present this July by the guy who works at Lalique's shop in the Burlington arcade but I couldn't find it no matter how I tried. Well, victory came today with you 🤗

    Back in Revolutionary War days the English rode on the left to keep their shooting hand free....but the crafty Americans could shoot with both hands at the same time. That's how we won the War of Independence.....or so the story goes. ;-D

    Another pedant here. There are plenty of one-way streets where one can drive on the right. It's the 'two way street' bit that is unique to The Savoy.

      +alan mac Thanks Alan, yes, it looks like some of the videos lack absolute accuracy but they're a bit of fun at least. I'm glad people are watching them though.A very Merry Christmas to you !!

  • @tangatoto362
    @tangatoto362 Před 5 lety

    .....well, this doesn’t actually answer the question....and the fact that most people in the human race ARE right handed and therefore in past times held their sword ( or lance !) in there right hand or arm (in the case of a lance) , then , on horseback in battles or tournaments, they would NATURALLY approach their opponent right side to right side, otherwise they would be leaning across their horse to engage each other. ... so there IS a logical reason for us civilised and sensible few amongst the seething masses of humanity to drive where we do, on the left.

    actually to me ,you British are the only people that have a valid reason for WHY you drive on the left side of the road. The US drives n the right because, we were not going to be like England. That was decided way back around the time the revolution started. Sounds a bit like a spoiled 14 year old doesn't it? I remind my friends it is not "the wrong side" of the road, it is the other side of the road.

      Just remember where your Country came from. You used to drive on the left, the correct side, but as Thomas commented, you changed to the right for safety issues. Thomas is correct.
