- Surfing in Portugal on a two week van-life adventure - this trip was about replacing tainted memories of the country with fresh ones. Although the waves didn't quite deliver, it was really nice to sink into being a tourist and seeing the many different colours of Portugal.

When you do come back, come closer to the winter here, and visit Peniche, Ericeira, Costa da Caparica. You will DEFINITLY find the waves you are looking for in Portugal. And you may even have time to watch the huge waves of Nazaré! See you mate!
When do the swells start coming through? Would September be too early?
@@spencer_mayne can say for Caparica: Sep seems to be early, this time it usually has tiny summer waves, I would say a bigger swell is coming closer to Nov
Next time visit us on autumn or winter: more waves, cheaper and less crowded - win win win ;)
I'm sorry that you had such a bad experience on the other trip but we are one of safest countries around
Added bonus of extremely cold water and terrible weather
@@luminisant you have never been in the country with most sunny days in the world for sure
@@rodrigobustorff1096 Key word: winter

Dude good effort for trying to stay positive. Portugal is awesome for surfing, just not in August… You must visit it again in the winter (when its flat on your side of the world!).
Can be good also in the summer.
aussie land is never flat…
I was there the whole of March and was very dissapointed. Either too flat, too big, too windy or too crowded. Also been there in September, had good waves at supertubos but too crowded.
@@Swingkid14 Then you got unlucky Portugal fires! Also alot of options in Iberia no matter the swell size, just need to be able to drive.
@@MindSurf248 had a van for a month and drove everywhere during one of the best months. Still too crowded on the good days. I prefer Galicia and Cantabria. I saw perfect Supertubos, Sagres and Nazare but too big for my 5'8 Twinfin
7 days flat waters, 7 days eating good food in our beautiful country, 7 unexpected pounds, you should brought a 7'7 w/ 77L to be cautious 😂 Really nice to see you enjoying so many different places here. Have a nice trip 🤙
More of this Kale! Brilliant mate! I know the feeling of not surfing for an extended period (Waaayyyy longer than 7-days) It just makes me more excited for when the time comes. Have a great trip!
Awesome video showcasing Portugal! I was there earlier this year in March and the waves were pumping. The train ride from Lisbon to Porto was pretty special. Great Country.
Great vid Kale, and I liked how you made the most of the waves, while others seemed to look on, searching for something better. Well done mate and enjoy your trip!
Love Portugal, spent about 18 months surfing along the coast, i learnt to surf in Portugal and I'm from Melbourne, Australia, great locations and epic surf spots, hopefully you get a chance to visit again to enjoy the waves, one of my favourite countries, a great area is Figueira da Foz (Cabedello)
Figueira da Foz my town 👍🏄♂
Hey! Moving to Portugal in May 2023, how did you sustain yourself for the 18 months? Any other advice would be amazing thank you!
I am in Portugal right now for 2 weeks. The waves are super good, and this video has me wanting to do van life in Portugal.
Glad you enjoyed Portugal. Such a lovely country. Hope you enjoyed Peniche. Loved that place. Nice waves and locals so friendly.
Love Portugal 🙌🏼🙌🏼 can’t wait to go back🏄🏽♂️💪🏼
man, from this week its ON! Would be a pleasure to have you here again. greetings from Peniche.
@7 mins cool music!!!! Super cool city and landscape views!!!!
nice!
Kale, you have been lucky surfing such nice waves at Bordeira beach in the beginning of this video. Usually it is a mess, haha!
So much fun to watch you guys living in Big Kahuna! A bit sad that the waves weren’t great for you. Enjoy the rest of the trip!
It would be amazing to have another for the north of Spain!!!
Did two Portuguese summers, 2009 & 2010, living and working at a surf school in Ericeria, great place waves and food!!!! Did a few missions to the Algave and I noticed you surfed Carrapateria Praia da Bordeira, brings back great memories and yes I scored there, guessing you didnt get Arrifana or Canal on??????
Aww dude! Just found your channel - I'm a dead beginner surfer, but also full-time van lifer. We did exactly the same route you guys did from Lisbon/Porto to Hossegor France around the 18th August for 3 weeks. I wish it was easier to meet up with other people living in vans!
Im traveling too. Could you please share some locations free van parking close to the ocean??
I am getting puffy too! You coached me at whale beach after a lot of bad weather - great to see you having fun
thank you bro for the vibes.
oh wow welcome to Portugal mate .. its been one of the worst summers i remember for surfing around here so we feel your pain...but you still manage to get some litle fun waves :)
Great video! Love it🤟🏽
Now that's a odd combination of someone you are used to see down under appearing all the way up on our beloved country. When you can score in the sea you can always score out of the plate. Happy holidays!
You picked up the wrong season Bro. Go in January, it rocks!
Hello my friend. I been following and learning from yours videos for a long time 👍🏄♂️ and sometimes I dream about a surf trip to Australia and meet you personally, and now I see that you came to my country and to my citie of Porto. Big thank to you and for the good video’s 👍
My brother, some gratitude in perspective.
I have dual South African/Portuguese citizenship but have never visited my roots because of how expensive it is to travel to Europe from here.
I have had boards stolen out my car at my local break, had my car stolen outside my home, camera equipment stolen from my home.
I have to make a living from something I loathe and will have to work till the day I die.
I have not taken a holiday to a foreign destination with someone I love (ever).
I have not surfed since January due to surgery.
I have had plenty Pasteis de Nata though!
There's always something to be "Obrigado" for...
beautifully filmed!
Amazing, first take is my usual home surf spot! And yes,you came in the worst time for waves here🤣
I'm looking for some smaller waves for when I visit in September, would you mind sharing where this is?
The palmier looked delicious
Great surfing!! and enjoyed the vlog. Thinking of touring down to Portugal for some surf hopefully one day
Nice one mate 🙌🏻
I was in Portugal in April this year. I surfed Ribera D'llhas one day. I placed my car key in a lock on the outside of my driver's side door to make sure everything was safe and secure. One problem, I forgot I opened my passenger side door open. I was in the water for 3 hours and not a thing was stolen. Awesome!
Same 😄 we were at the same beach in March and left the window fully open.
How much people were roughly in the water ?
You came to Portugal uau
Well cheers from one of your Portuguese followers
Stay surfing & have fun
Hey Kales,
as someone who's been following you since the early days and been spending a good amount of time chasing swells along the rugged portuguese coastline, I must also urge you to come back in autumn/winter/spring, basically any(!) other time than mid summer.
If you're interested, I could DM you some locations worth checking out to help you find peace with this amazing stretch of land one day.
Greetings and keep up the good work!
Keep going mate!
So nice to see my youtube surf coach is in the same peninsula, it would be sick to randomly find you at the water! If you still are in the Lisbon area give Sintra a try, Praia grande and the smaller beach right behind, Praia Rodizio, are true gems. Also in that area, Praia da Ursa is one of the beautiest I've ever been to, not really for surfing thought but for a stunning hike. Of course, Ericeira is full of good spots and very pretty but also too crowded.
I immediatly recogniced where you guys are at the beginning of the video. It's one of my favourites places. Haven't been there in 2 years though.
Great video!!! Lovely 😎
Come to Figueira da Foz. Next weekend is the Gliding Barnacles festival
Nice !! Keep up the good work\experiences
Love a good Portuguese tart! Dig in mate💪
Sick video
so cool
Fallen in love with the Pastel de nata I see.
Nice vlog!!
Mate I feel for you, it absolutely fired in second week of September as well, 10ft at 18s.
Europe is just not a summer wave destination, always have a good chance of getting skunked in June-Aug.
Hey Kale try the north of Spain. Galicia, Asturias.. Beautiful surf spots for a van trip. Pantin, doninos, oyambre, frejulfe and many more.. 🤙🏼
I was really looking fwd to how you got the van there 😂 good go mate 😎
Carrapateira!!!
I ve been surfing here during 2 weeks that was insane 🥰
Amado beach is near to this spot (around 2 miles) and this one is fun too !
Hi Kale i just starting to see your videos because i start surfing and i'm from portugal, and i find this, you stayed in my home town. I hope you enjoyed staying where. Nice beaches to surf near porto covo are malhão, aivados, são torpes and sometimes furnas in milfontes. Hope you come back.
LOTR reference earns real cred 👊🏽
Bring them sick videos on you legend !
So you came to Portugal during the summer and still able to crash a few “waves”.. I wouldn’t call it bad luck, but instead, an amazing trip! As people said already, come back during our autumn/winter (October to May) and you’ll be amazed. Cheaper, less crowded and some amazing waves. Bring your best 4/3 tho! Ahah
omg! that's nice editin-g have a good day!buddy~
Wait... you were here??? Oh man that's awesome!!! Unfortunately last two or three weeks there was almost no surf, even in the north where usually pumps a little more in summer. Hope to meet you in the ocean one of these days. Cheers
And there's a good swell coming in end if this week too!!
yeah middle of august theres no swell its peak summer, although we get at least one swell in august, wich we did get on the second part of the month, that swell you caught in france. Give our contry another go now in the autumn or like february/march. keep up the good work
I love your youtube channel...I live in Portugal, so next time come around Praia da Santa Cruz (Torres Vedras)...nice waves in summer and no crowd...just between Peniche and Ericeira...
You should be reminded that in the MIDDLE of the SUMMER there arent that many Waves in Portugal....until May and beggining of June you can still get good Surf, not in July, August and beginnings of September; by the End of September the Waves come back ROARING !!
You are in Portugal and ur aying brazilian music, loved it.
Glad you enjoyed my home country ! Next Biarritz ?
FOMO Portugal
Love the vids man I'm from israel and I'm also planing a surf trip there since wave shere r very rare
Men, you missed all the good summer surf spots.
It was worth it just for the romantic trip for two 😉
Hey Kale,
Glad you found some waves. I'll be in Portugal in a few weeks. Hope to surf near Porto... any recommendations?
Come to Algarve next time mate, to a location called Aljezur, good and consistent waves even in summer time. Big ups!!
you are not the only one. once we found 2 australians on the parking lot looking lost, they asked if we had seen anything unsually, we said no.
they lost 2 laptops couple of thousand euro's and their rental car. they had everything in that car and had nothing left for the rest of their trip. we drove them to the police office with their wetsuit still on.
Cant believe you came to Portugal.. in the north of portugal there is allways good waves.. even when its flat.. use our local beachcam service.. or talk to someone local!
Respect the beginners
Everybody was ;)
autumn and winter is the best time, summer is always flat here :/
Amazing trip. I just was 10 days ago aroung Carrapateira but the weather was terrible and the waves even worst 🤦🏻♂️
Did you visit Ericeira? :)
There are some really good spots to surf there and it's generally a bit bigger there.
P.S. Really nice vlog. It will be nice if you give more info about the surf spots. Thanks!
Coming to Ireland? Still flat here but won't be long until it pumps. Waters still warmish too this time of year.
7:20 knocked the dude down with splashes 😅
Beautiful images of our country! 🇵🇹 see you soon (winter!)
Great video, mind sharing where you rented the van. I want to do a similar trip someday. I do intend to also bring my kitesurfing equipment so if the surf is bad in the morning, hopefully I can kitesurf in the afternoon or do both if all goes well.
From a subscriber
I know the feeling man. If it goes flat for a week here, I lose my mind. Cant even skate enough to make it better. At least you’re in Portugal man, with your girlfriend. You can practice other things! Like: being in the moment in a beautiful place, savoring delicious foods and wines, and praticando seu português. At least you’re away from Australia and all the heavy handed covaids nonsense and propaganda. That’s got to be a relief.
Where was that beach break in the beginning? Just got back from eiricera myself.
Where are you surfing in the first clip!? Go surfing in Portugal in September and this is the kind of wave we're looking for.
What board was kale riding??? It was ripping!
Been to Portugal 4-5 times now. "Only" a 24hr drive from Austria....
Always worth it imho. Lovely cities, lovely people, great diverse culture with loads to look at and experience, oh and the waves get pretty good too.
Never had a bad surf trip, max 2-4days lul in-between swells in summer.
Love that place over there... One day... One day I'll live there.
Hey man. Was wondering how/who you rented the van from!? Thanks
please wrote me where this place on the beginning of the video where you park your van close to the beach.
??
Hi Kale. Do find yourself getting recognised much from the YT channel when yer away?
Yeah dude, unfortunately this summer has been brutal... 🇵🇹
Kale I need help! Been watching your videos for a while and decided to get my own board! I thought it was 7' but it's an 8' longboard. I'm 5'2..is it too big for me?? I have trouble carrying it..I've been debating getting a slightly smaller one but I've no idea! 😭🙏
Polish plates on the van :) greets from this country
As a Portuguse I feel really bad about your first experience in our country, Portugal is I guess in today's standards still a pretty safe place but its not heaven, anyways hope you enjoyed! (pls be quiet about those surf spots :D )
I come to Portugal in 2 weeks to do the same♥️
France is currently with pumping waves...
Come down to Costa da Caparica for a surprise
🇵🇹 🤙🏻
surf is a vice, we have to control it, otherwise the only thing you would do is surf, and you will loose a lot of things around you, saludos
Did u surf in malhao ??
Lovely video! Where were you robbed a few years ago? (so I can avoid that area when we go!!)
Caiscais
"Orcs exiting the gates of Mordor" 😂 Thanks for not calling the spot by the real name. It's busy enough there.
We just getting swell now, Do you surf the disco quaded all the time ?
All sorts
You’re on the bread line.
I❤ pastelitos de belén🥧🥧
I am heading on my to Portugal in November in my own search for waves! Thanks for the inspiration! Did you bring your own boards or rent?
Jonathan Halvorson ....a Portuguese Surfer here; renting is a bit expensive and you cannot always get the Boards you like or suit you....and in November there are SERIOUS Waves but also Rain and not that good Weather; especially in the Northern Part, above Cabo da Roca, where Ericeira, Peniche, Praia Grande, Nazaré, etc...are located...down South and in the Lisbon Area, ALWAYS great Waves and some Sunshine days all Winter !
@@pedrogama4585 Thanks, I was looking at going to Ericeira, Peniche to try and surf and Nazare to watch any big waves. Where would you suggest I go in November? I also plan to book a scuba dive somewhere along the Algarve coast.
@@jomafat88 ...great plan, the Scuba diving in Algarve; you should defenitly try SAGRES at the very Southern Tip of Portugal; lots of fish to catch too...as for the Surf, you can get GREAT waves at any of those Places but be aware that the Water can get Ice Cold and out of Control conditions too...its a matter of LUCK
@@jomafat88 ...the DEFENITE better months for a Surf Tourism visit to Portugal is between March and early June...and after the Summer, between Spetember and end of October early November...bad luck is to be expected in December, January and February
@@jomafat88 ...sorry, I didnt tell you the places to Surf down in the South of Portugal; Costa da Caparica, very consistent...Arrifana, Odeceixe, Carrapateira, Amado, SAGRES..the whole SouthWest coast is FILLED with great Surf spots with lots of Sunshine, all the way to the Algarve
What size h4 quads you running in that board? Looking fast
