  • This is the full-length interview we produced with Lieutenant John Murray of the Dallas Fire Department (aka Dallas Fire-Rescue).
As we (Dallas Fire Department) enter 2020, 50% of our Emergency Response Bureau is comprised of members with less than 10 years of service... and 30% have less than 5 years! It's an exciting time to be a Firefighter in Dallas, but with the exodus (driven by retirement) of so many Veteran Firefighters, we wanted to create a resource to help our members understand what it means to be a Rookie Firefighter and how to get the most out of their Rookie years. We believe these traditions and disciplines not only apply to DFD, but the greater Fire Service as well.
In this interview we answer the following questions:
    1. Who are we talking about when we use the word, "Rookie?"
    2. What makes a “good rookie” and what makes a “bad rookie?”
    3. Do you think it’s harder to be a Rookie in today’s DFD, or when you were a rookie? Why?
    4. What do you expect from a rookie at your station?
    5. What should a typical shift look like for a rookie?
    6. Have the rookies let us down? Or have we let them down?
    7. Is it important for rookies to embrace FD tradition? Why or why not?
In our opinion, there isn't a better person in the Dallas Fire Department to answer these questions, than Lieutenant John Murray. Lieutenant Murray literally wrote the book on what it means to be a Rookie Firefighter back in 2011 when he published, "Rookie The Book: The Original Rookie's Guide to a Successful Fire Service Career" (Available on Amazon.com). Since the book's publication, Lieutenant Murray continues to solidify his reputation in Dallas as a leader among leaders, influencing members both up and down the chain of command. He's about as genuine as they come and one we're proud to call a friend of The Roll Steady.

First 5 minutes, is spot on. Been in the service for only 4 1/2 years, been at my current department for 1 1/2 years and promoted to engineer. I do consider myself a rookie and strive to consistently become more aware and knowledgeable about my department, my job, and the fire service in general. Thank y'all for posting.

I haven’t interviewed yet for the fire department. This video has opened my eyes as a guy who has only been in a department one time to ask for an application. This is exhilarating, thank you for this conversation.

Appreciate the conversation here. I remember when I was a rookie over 30+years ago and it brought back great memories of senior guys who taught me. Now as a Fire Chief with the new transition to a combination fire department figuring out how to engage the rookie life once again.

Must have to come to a place in your professional path it a while for paramedics and EMT, to get to a put where they are even at point to start needed and learning and applying critical thinking capabilities. It just takes time and being able to pare the best to get the best out of them all!!!
