Her performance of this song at the Grammys is even better. She shook the entire building with that performance.
Toni Braxton week:
5. Just Be a Man About It
4. Un-Break My Heart
3. Another Sad Love Song
2. You’re Makin Me High
1. He Wasn’t Man Enough
I agree. I love me some Toni Braxton.
Ty for including another sad lovesong
great list. Her new music is also great like Long As I Live.
I can’t wait for toni Braxton week. One of my favorite singers❤️.
Breathe Again
Puffy was dealing with the club shooting allegations ( man that hasn’t aged well) and Mariah was dealing with claims of having a mental breakdown.
Especially with the video of him beating Cassie coming out smh
Fun Facts:
1. The piano sample in the beginning is from the soap opera The Young and the Restless.
2. The events on the TVs were happening during that time period. Diddy and Mariah were featured because they were going through drama (Diddy's murder case and Mariah's breakdown). The song was released after 9/11 and around the time the US went to war.
3. Her Grammy performance of the song earned her a standing ovation.
4. Some of the scenarios in the video are things she suffered through in her own life.
The Grammy performs brings tears to my eyes EVERY TIME I watch it.
The soap opera sample is not just in the beginning. The entire song is built around it.
Auntie was letting those TV screens haaave ittttt
no mercy on them fatback tvs lol
That part 🙌🏾
This "be without you" and "not gon cry" is my mama's fav songs. English isn't her 1st or 2nd language but these songs resonated with her so much its something bout Mary's voice you feel her pain thru her music and if you are able to learn more about her background she's been through so much
Mary J. Blige is the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul & Mary has been very open about many of her life struggles growing up poor in Yonkers, NY, her substance use disorder, her relationship with K-Ci from Jodeci & the domestic violence in that relationship, she survived Puffy & Bad Boy records, & then her marriage where her husband & manager cheated on her & took alot of her money. So Mary is straight now but she sings from a place of knowing pain first hand & that's a big reason why her fans, me included, connect with her from a place of authenticity.
Mary is similar to Fantasia in where you can feel everything in their voice. The way they express music is simply amazing
This song is pretty heavy. I work with people who have gone through all of these situations. It's very sad to hear the stories, but it's very uplifting to see those who make it past "the drama," as she says, and have found some peace and happiness.
Painful and beautiful, indeed! It's also essential to note that this song was written and produced by the amazing duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Mary's powerful delivery and their wizardry is magical...just like they have done with so many others.
Yall should watch her live performance of this at the grammys. She was on level 10. If I'm not mistaken, it was after 911 so it was supercharged.
This song came out not to long after 9/11 and so I think she was just referring to how more dramatic the world became after that in general for individuals as well as society as a whole.
Aww! I didn't think for one second you all wouldn't be able to connect with this song at all. But Blige can be very deep in her song context.
This song gave a lot of ppl strength.
I will say this not just about this song in particular but about sad movies/sad music/sad art in general. There is a lot of beauty in joyful art but the amount of beauty that comes out of tragic painful art is incomparable. I get that most of us want to avoid seeing that cos we have enought ish in our lives but sometimes seeing others go through things helps us cope or understand life more and appreciate what we have or learn or just not feel alone in our pain. Doesn't mean we have to live in that 24/7 but when we come across it we can appreciate it and experience it then move on to lighter things. This is what I love most about Mary she captures pain better than any artist out there. She has a lot of joy and celebration of life too.
Mary j blige is known for seeing about her pain
Whew I haven’t heard this song or seen the video in ages. Had me on this train emotional 😩 crazy how this song is still very much applicable and relatable today.
She did this song at the Super Bowl with snoop dogg and dr.dre recently.
@weekly top5 hi Mike and Joe! I didn’t mean to being you guys down, but this song is so good. And it is truly raw. She got a standing ovation at the Grammys when she performed this. Puffy and Mariah were going through it, hence their cameo. Swine flu was all over on the news. Sometimes I just put this on and get my frustration out, you know.
Great choice! It's a lot of hurt going on in the world this song just resonates with you.
This was around the 9/11 events, we where in full drama for sure
You guys have to react to her Grammy performance of this song! It was amazing and super intense! This song came out after 9/11 and she's from New York. If you didn't think this song could get any better then you have to watch her sing it live! Every single live performance of this song is a masterpiece!
I always found the sample used in this song to be like a chef’s kiss. What better way to invoke a feeling of drama then to sample a song linked to daily TV drama for so many Americans! If you grew up in the 70s-90s and mom, grandma or your auntie had control of the TV in the mid afternoon, you probably heard that tune since it was used as part of the theme song for the number 1 Daytime Soap Opera, “The Young and the Restless” on CBS. The sample being from “Cotton's Dream” by Barry De Vorzon and Perry Botkin, Jr.
A staple song... for kids of 70s..80s..
A painful song that make me cry everytime.. Great choice!!😢
Mary was really digging deep and reaching in from her own pain and demons at the time, having struggled with substance abuse for years prior to this point in 2001. One of her best records in her discography. Pleeease i beg you, watch her 2002 Grammy performance of “No Drama”. It’s everything 😮💨
Thank you Chante we appreciate the songs and we appreciate the reactors reacting to it ❤ sending love and light 😊
We need a Super Bowl reaction week including the one that included her singing this song ❤
for me this is her top tier.
ps. love that mariah carey scene on tv.
I’m a big fan of Mary but yall making me realize I never watched any of her music videos
This song oh my God so so good
She sampled "The Young and the Restless" theme
Luv that part - - LOL
I like this song
well, this was certainly choice... the thing about Mary is that you'll get different generations loving different things.
Yeah, her career spans decades and we each experienced a different version.
Young Mary is definitely a favourite of mine, more RnB. Her song with George Micheal really got me hooked on her voice😊
U guys should do Faith Evans Week !

#3- Used To Love Me

You all do such a great job with these videos. You give thoughtful feedback. Keep up the good work.
Mary J was in 2 of those scenarios herself… she went through a drug addiction and an abusive relationship with a member of the group Jodeci so this hit home for her..

justice for Go Girl video
Mary sang her soul out on this record. This is why Mary is so beloved. The way you can FEEL the emotion when she sink. Mary’s style of singing is one of the reasons she became an icon. Her music helps our mothers, aunties, grandmothers, etc get through hard times. Her voice displays the emotions and frustrations of women. You can feel every emotion she displays through her singing, so her music can be used to uplift women. Fun Facts: Her nickname is “Auntie Mary” because many black people see her as an auntie. She has the energy, look, and vibe of women that we know of in our families.
Toni Braxton Week 1!

Please do Toni Braxton. She is one of the best selling female artists of all time, has several Grammys and other awards, was one of the leading acts of the 90s, and she is known for her numerous hits and her very distinct and unique voice, trust me you guys would love it. I couldn’t fit all of her hits in this list, but I think these may be some of her best and most important songs. A week dedicated to this legend would be amazing.
You guys should check out her performance at the Grammy's that year performing this.. RIVETING

@weeklytop5 yes the themes were DV, drug abuse, and gang violence/ retaliation. Mary was going through things at this time too, hence her intensity in singing and her emotions while making the video.
This should be number 1 or at least number 2.
Lookin forward to Family Affair !
One of the best songs EVER! The crescendo at the end is magestic. Love MJB ❤ my other favourite by her is "Love @ 1st sight", a much more happy song.
5:56 Diddy and Mariah cameo
This didn't age well for Diddy
That was p didhe and Mariah Carey on the tv screens while Mary went in on the vocals
Mary J Blige needs 10 weeks, because 35 years in the business and because she has too many good songs, I mean Family Affair, Be Without You, You Don't Have To Worry, I'm Going Down, Not Gon Cry, Real Love, My Life, Missing You, I Can Love You, All That I Can say, Just Fine, Mr Wrong, Right Now, Thick Of it, Good Morning Gorgeous... and you can add 10 more weeks for her collaborations, lives duets and duets like with U2, George Michael, Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Method Man, Wyclef Jean, Dr Dre, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Whitney Houston, Sting, Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Chaka Khan, Prince, Busta Rhymes, Rod Stewart, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Anita Baker...
