    Women have a million and one laceless shoes but for guys, loafers are usually the first time a guy wears a shoe without laces. That makes sizing them a very dicey proposition: you can't adjust the tightness with laces and you don't get elastic or buckles like you do on Chelseas and other laceless boots. We visited Justin Fitzpatrick at his store in SoHo, New York City, to learn all about the common pitfalls guys have when sizing loafers.

    Good quality shoes all have a break-in period (which is why repairing is key) but after wearing new shoes for a few weeks if extra room is still needed or a specific area is uncomfortable, use Ralyn Stretchers or just have a cobbler professionally stretch your shoes. Ralyn makes width stretchers, vamp raiser, toe raiser, bunion stretchers, boot stretchers and 2-way stretchers.

    Hi Nick,
    I disagree on sizing a loafer/boat shoe down.
    I am an avid sperry/loafer wearer. I usually size either in my normal shoe size (10 mens) or half a size up (10.5 mens).
    My feet are too wide, I use to size down to 9.5 but shoes felt too tight even sockless. I prefer some room for my toes and I size up, in case I need to wear socks.
    I also size up in my Chelsea boots.
    As always, keep up the useful content.

      Do you wear true to size with Gucci loafers as well? I got a size 10 but notice an ever so slight heel slippage. My foot isn’t going to come out and they’re comfortable to wear now, I don’t have to break them in but they might stretch?

    • @daniell2217
      @daniell2217 Před 2 měsíci

      To be fair, they said you “MAY” have to size down. Not “everyone MUST size down”.

      @Mr-R.R. Před 2 měsíci

      It seems like a lot of people in these comments aren't watching it listening to what is being said. They said "generally" you'd want to size down (which is true) but there are exceptions. One of which they mentioned was when the feet are too narrow, so obviously it also applies to when it's too wide

    You could use an insole to fit a loose loafer. And use a tennis ball, in my case a pickleball and a half insole under the ball to stretch the top of shoes.

    Stretch to fit depends on the leather type. You need the right last for a tight starting fit to work, and the right leather. I have some looser fitting loafers that work really well. Blake stitched is good for loafers.

    Tongue pads can make all the difference for a loafer that fits everywhere but the instep… if the instep is slightly too big and causes heel sleep, Pedag tongue pads can give you a couple mms of volume and are only a few dollars.

    My first pair of dress shoes I picked out a pair of loafers online. Had a US size 10 I tried on in the store but returned them cause I thought they were kinda cheap. They fit me ok, maybe slightly loose. I sized down to a 9 this time with a new brand.
    And man, these are looser than the first pair! As I tried to break them in around the house they keep getting looser. I’ll have to exchange them for 8s. I wear 10-10.5 in sneakers/ normal shoes and that’s borderline too tight on me sometimes width and height. I’d rather they be slightly snug and stretch out. Can’t have my heel popping out. Especially with thin socks or not at all, as you guys mentioned

    New Balance, Nike, Adidas, all in 7Uk, boots, oxford’s and loafers all in 6Uk size. And all works perfectly. New loafer need to be snug or very snug, but not painful, because after years wearing loafers will loose a lots.

      I dislike all boots without adjustablility with laces. Loafers, chelseas, etc. You either get it perfect or it's never gonna fit good. It's so much easier jus to stick to laced footwear.

      @@whereRbearsTeethThey never ever said to they it should be painful or expect it to be painful. What are you guys saying? They said snug, but to the point you can still move your toes around and get your heel out. That's not painful. And yes, leather shoes actually can and do get stretched whether you want to or not. Bespoke makers and cobblers do it successfully for a reason

    Just because he sells shoes doesn’t mean he is a stylish guy. It is always good to educate yourself. 99% of salesmen are dummies and do not know what they are doing.Their sole purpose is just to convince and sell product. A sales man once told me to select a comfortable jeans and comfortable to him means baggy.I dont go near them when i want to shop in stores. Many are just creepy and will come to the dressing room to ask if it fits or you are ok.
