Sand perfectly safe to use with goldfish it just more time when cleaning the tank and you got to give sand a good clean it still gonna grow beneficial bictira within it don't get me wrong I love a algae carpet and much prefer that myself but wouldn't say its a bad idea especially for a tank and filter and owner we have here there be no problem at all
