      Man, I got the gateron black ink v2 stabs and durock v2 stabs at the same time. Put the lubed durocks on for a while, then changed over to the black ink v2 stabs - I really like the black inks tbh. Idk what it is, but the sound is a bit more thocky. Not a lot more, but it's there. Balanced the wires on each and the black inks barely needed any balancing Co pared to the durocks also.

    Great looking board, and the sounds are fantastic!
    I got mine with the brass plate, and so far I love it. The only complaints I have are that the stabs, even when taken care of a bit, still aren't great, and that the cable that plugs into the PCB in the bottom doesn't line up very well when you're trying to put the board back together so it gets pinched if you aren't careful.

      @@JaeyouPark Glorious only just got the stock in on my reservation, so I should have the board in about a week. Can't wait to get to this stuff. BTW, I had to wait for the PC plate to be in stock, but I was able to get that weeks ago and have it ready for when the GMMK Pro is delivered.

    • @timfederwitz
      @timfederwitz Před 3 lety

      @@JaeyouPark It took a little longer than a week to arrive, but I now have it and applied the mods. A couple things: The version I was sent actually already has pads under the stock stabs. Also, the stabs were *heavily* lubed! To the point that the spacebar wouldn't work properly. I had to take them off anyway to clean them and relube them, and that's when I noticed the pads under the stabs as stock now. Also, I purchased new PCB and case foam from StupidFish (stupidfish.design/products/gmmk-pro-case-and-plate-foam) in the 3mm size (the case foam is 2mm and has cutouts for the hotswap sockets). I feel like this foam is an additional upgrade from the stock. Finally, I am using the GMK Godspeed Apollo keycaps set and loving the build. Thanks again for posting these mods!

  • @mikes41720
    @mikes41720 Před 3 lety +2

    Thanks for sharing the mods! I did the PC plate, standoff removal, and stabilizer upgrades to Durock V2s. I also removed the case and plate foam.
    I didn’t have D65 gaskets, so I went with a triple layer of stock gaskets on the bottom case, removed the diffusers, removed the PCB screws, and only used 4 case screws, lightly screwed in.
    Still a bit muted with linears but the added sound and flex is there, if not a bit unstable.
    Do the D65 gaskets provide a deeper sound over the stock gaskets or is it just mostly for the flex and feel?

  • @marginalmeaning
    @marginalmeaning Před 3 lety +4

    Wow! Definitely made the switches sound much deeper after those mods. I cancelled my reservation after hearing about the ineffective gaskets and how the board kind of nulls a lot of switch sound. Might have to reconsider after hearing your mods.

      Oh man I got mine a few days ago and the first thing I did was take it apart about put some lubed Gat black ink v2 stabs in there - but the first thing I noticed was how good the pads still were. I had I only seen videos about how gnarly they are when you open the board up - now they include a big bag of gaskets also. And a big bag of screws. Little off topic, but I didnt strip any screws with a size 0/00 PH. PH1 seemed a little big contrary to everyone's suggestions. It may just be ifixit in particular though.

    Very nice. Will try the gasket upgrade on mine. Swapped my stabs out for durock V2's and removed the case foam so far. Running everglide aqua/water king switches which are buttery smooth. Debating removing the PCB foam as I do find the whole setup mutes the thock more than I'd like. More thock the better.

      I've also swapped to Durock v2s, holee modded and lubes and installed Aqua King switches (also lubed). I've also installed the aftermarket FR4 plate and removed the plate foam, but installed a thin layer of PE foam over the PCB, instead (it goes between the PCB and the plate, so it sits under the switches). Nice and thoccy now. I have the Stupidfish 3mm foam on the way, so I'll replace the case foam with that to see if it's better.

  • @UpgradingAsUsual
    @UpgradingAsUsual Před 2 lety +5

    From what I have experienced, the typing experience overall is wholly improved after changing from the PC plate to the Aluminium plate with the gasket mod. This is because the PC plate has issues with bowing and the consistency around the board is way off all over the place. Sure it does sound better, but only in the middle. The outer keys sound much higher pitched than the middle and it ruins the entire experience. Of course, this is all corrected with the aluminium plate. This should also apply to the brass plate, too. I will however, try to sand down the stab holes on the PC plate to give them space to move around which might help. Stock PC plate is a huge no no for me at the moment.
    I am going to attempt a new type of gasket mod which I will update you here in the near future. I have applied a similar mod in another type of enclosure (nothing to do with keyboards and on a much larger scale) in the past with huge success. If I could apply it on a smaller scale, the result should be the same. If the mod proves to be successful, I will update you here. Back off, man. I'm a scientist.

    How much does the gasket upgrade reduce the stiffness of the board? Is it a very noticeable difference?

    • @little_fluffy_clouds
      @little_fluffy_clouds Před 2 lety

      To be honest, it's a marginal difference. Don't expect much flex on this board even after the upgrade, it just gives you a slightly softer bottom-out experience.

  • @sumojo

    I'm curious to know how the typing experience changed after adding the d65 gaskets. Did they help make for a softer typing feel?

    • @JaeyouPark
      @JaeyouPark  Před 3 lety +2

      To be completely honest, the gaskets help marginally with the over sound/feel. I think PC Plate actually had a bigger impact on the typing feel as the bottom out feel is much more pleasant.

    Very cool! I've got a GMMK Pro on its way so I'm excited to start tinkering with it. I don't have a whole lot of money so I'll have to do these upgrades slowly. if you were to rank the upgrades from most impactful to least impactful, how might that list look?

    • @timfederwitz
      @timfederwitz Před 3 lety +1

      I wouldn't try to speak for @Jaeyou Park, but I bet if you did nothing more than buy/add the Polycarbonate Plate and lube/band-aid mod the stabilizers, that would get you most of the way there. Also, not sure what switches you went with, but the Glorious Pandas (what I bought for it) are NOT lubed from the factory. So lube those too. You can get a tube of Super Lube on Amazon for $3 that will make a huge difference (if you are trying to stay on the cheap).

    • @JaeyouPark
      @JaeyouPark  Před 3 lety +1

      what if you replace the bottom case screws with slightly longer ones so that when you screw it together, the plate and PCB doesn't press as hard against the gasket?

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored Před 3 lety

      @@justplainlawr I think ultimately, I might end up filing down the lower case to increase the space for a thicker gasket to fit. I feel like the tolerance is too tight and it's squeezing the poor and already super thin gasket way too tight... kind of defeats the gasket mount.

    Can you please tell me which is better to choose Varmilo MA87 or Glorious GMMK PRO? Thank you !

    • @little_fluffy_clouds
      @little_fluffy_clouds Před 2 lety

      I own both. Varmilo is a fully assembled keyboard that needs no modding or tuning out of the box, excellent stabs, thick keys, beautiful colourways, great typing feel and sounds, but it’s not hot swappable so you can’t swap switches easily (although different switch versions are sold), no RGB (only white LED illumination), not programmable in software and there’s no rotary knob. It’s basic, but looks great, feels great and does what it sets out to do really really well.
      GMMK Pro is a kit which offers a lot more customisation opportunities, though it needs assembly and some tuning/modding to achieve a really good result, but it’s much more flexible. It has some flaws (bad tolerances on the polycarbonate plate, flimsy and an annoyingly large number of screws, fiddly to assemble and disassemble), but is good value at this price range if you want to build your own board
