In todays video I talk about some of the areas of vegetable farming that aren't spoken about too often like getting change orders from the bank, renewing vehicle registrations, counting money at the end of the day, dealing with a new pilot program for senior citizens and a few other odd jobs that goes on around the farm. And what should I do with this wheat?!
Also wanted to say thank you! I'm 27 years old. I'm the 7th generation on our family farm here in kansas/Nebraska. We raide your usual crops like corn. Soybeans, wheat, oats, alfalfa for our cows. I farm 800 acres but ever since I started watching you I've started to do more produce. I always have a sweet corn crop every year but it's usually less than an acre. But because of your videos and your expert knowledge on this side of agriculture. I've now planted 2 acres of sweet corn. Have one more acre I plan to plant on the 4th of July. Gonna start selling it at our local farmers market and road side spot. I also have peppers and tomatoes. I plan to do lettuce, cabbage, potatoes, cauliflower, onions, and radishes next year. That is so awesome to hear and that inspires me to keep making videos and sharing my knowledge. My background is pretty similar, although I’m only a fourth generation, we had cattle on our farm for over 100 years, milking Holsteins. Definitely grew my share of alfalfa back in the day and wheat. We finally convinced my dad to stop growing wheat because it always fell on me and my brother to harvest all of it and it was right when sweetcorn season was about to start and we were just too darn busy to mess with it so now we’re just corn and beans on about 1300 acres. I meant to showcase more of our grain operation during planting season but just never got around to it, but will try my best to show some of the harvest at least. Next up, green bean harvest this week! By the way, during my off-season, I plan to travel around the country with my wife showcasing other farms on my CZcams channel. Would you have any interest in being a part of that this winter?
Yes I definitely would!!! I'd love to show my farm. It's not much. Lots of older equipment but it's an honest living! I think that would be awesome content to showcase too! Show people how in different areas of the US and how we all farm a little different! Not alot going on in winter here but we have plenty of cow stuff and we harvest corn and milo (grain sorghum) up till November here. So u may beable to catch us then maybe! Keep up the great videos! Your really inspiring me to get into the produce!
I have never seen a farmer or any other business owner to be so open and transparent with the money how much everything costs and how much you take in on your vegetables etc. that is very surprising to me and I don’t know if that is a great idea to do so !
A mix of wildflowers and some fruit and nut trees for the family to enjoy in a few years seems like a nice use of it.
Thats business. People read about the successes but rarely know the work that goes into it. Good video 👍

It's great that you can get small banknotes or coins .Where I live it's a notorious and overwhelming problem. Even ATMs are loaded almost exclusively with big notes,let alone 1s or 5s.
Wow, that’s strange. Never heard of not be able to get whatever you want from any bank. What really irks me is when I go to certain restaurants and they have a sign up that says must have exact change or credit card, it actually really pisses me off because we live in a cash society still… don’t even get me started on this lol
Wildflower bundles attract much attention at farmers markets, great idea!
It would just be for us to look at and help make our place look appealing, not to sell, but just not sure when the best time to sow them is but I will find out!
You could plant sunflower patch. Then charge people to visit and get pictures in the field of flowers.
Good suggestion, but I’m not even sure we’re gonna be opening our home farm market this year since we do so well in Columbus and our Marysville satellite stand.

No pumpkins this year, our first year without them in 24 years but I was ready for a break. We’re gonna do a little traveling this October and I’m tired of having people all over my farm in the fall ha ha. Looks like it’s gonna be wildflowers if I can figure out what to put out there and how to best seed them.
To be honest on the wheat field. I'd love to see how a no till sweet corn crop would do after wheat. I think that but I also like the wild flowers the only problem with flowers is weeds. Ull have a big flush of weeds after that wheat is cut. And it'll look horrible. I'd do sweet corn this year then go in with wildflowers.
Keeping the weeds at bay was the point to begin with and the wheat worked great! Don't need the ground for corn, still have 4 acres yet to plant...we'll figure something out, thanks for the feedback!
One of your more informative shows Jason. As a soon to be 71 year old man, I didn't even know about this discount for seniors as they never advertise it for us. And, many of my senior friends don't even have an I phone let alone know how to get an app. Its jst another way for the government to rip off seniors. Love the way your so organized. What ever you get paid should be five times as much as your getting.
It’s not really a discount for seniors it is basically food voucher for low income seniors that qualify. Believe me I feel like I’m getting paid peanuts for the amount of work. I’m not sure how much longer I can do this at this scale, without a full-time employee.
Great video. I agree with you, us.seniors are not liking all the technology.

Maybee Sunflowers? How about popcorn corn, not for shelling it. But i bought a whole ear at a farmers market, and brought it home put it in a paper bag in the microwave. yummy.
Make sure you call your neighbor so he can see when the most optimal time to harvest the wheat.
We grew sunflowers for several years and was a big headache to keep in cooler and transport to sell so not interested in that, but popcorn sounds a little interesting! Yes, need to go talk to the neighber asap, thanks for the feedback
A. I think a wildflower/pollinator patch would be neat. You would get a lot of people stopping for pictures an such. That could be a positive or a negative.

We will probably do the wildflowers, but highly unlikely we will use it to benefit our market because I don’t even know if we’re gonna open it up this year since we’re so busy with farmers markets and our satellite stand in Marysville.

Here in Alabama the nutrition program is great it used to be paper vouchers and they went to a card like a debit card with a QR code you scan it and it’s super simple and easy I think you will like it. I hope there vouchers are more than the 15/20$ here in Alabama the nutrition program is 50$ per senior and hopefully in the future it will go up to at least 100$ the seniors need it.
Is it expense to insure the 9 trucks ….and has a farmer do you get discount on insurance on the trucks and farming equipments in general?
I guess that’s something else I should’ve talked about is how expensive insurance is for a farming operation of our size that is this diverse. There aren’t really any discounts for farming or agriculture except for bundling everything together like personal, farm, liability, vehicles, etc.. we have a family friend that’s an insurance agent that takes good care of us, but definitely gonna consider shopping around this winter. One thing that makes us harder to write for an insurance company compared to other Farmers is that we have greenhouses and that takes special insurance if you want to have them covered for something like wind, for example.
A couple of days ago Broyans farm talked about their zinnia patch that is by their farmers market. I believe they run it as pick your own. It might be worth a shot. Especially beautiful varieties out there now. Can sell them in mason jars tied with twine. They are fairly long lasting and traditionally grow from saved seeds. Benary giants are great for bouquets. Most varieties bloom in 60 days. Best of luck.
Thanks that's a great suggestion and I did see that Broyans Farm episode as well...the problem is that I hate flowers, lol, but my wife loves them so i will probably plant some sort of flower out there for her to enjoy looking at and picking, but not really interested in selling them.
I think you should do whatever your wife wants works every time. Today I got to pull 2000ft of dripline out from under plastic and replace with new Rivulis. Got a deal on irritec built in drippers dripline said no clog. We get run off from mountains in june and our ditch gets full of sediments I have a sand filter but some how every emmitter on the irritec got clogged up the rivulis we laid is fine. 97 degrees and we are snaking driplines. It’s been here for 2 seasons now. We love the program and it really is easy on the app to get paid from it. Here in KS we go onto the app to take pics of the coupons weekly to than receive payments days later. She told us we could hold them till end of season but it may not go thru in a big number.
If it was just me and one other employee that needed to do it it wouldn't be that bad but I will have to train nearly a dozen of my employees on how to do this since we will be accepting them at 11 locations....not fun, I would much rather get the paper coupons.

Sunflowers are kind of big out west for the last few years
We grew sunflowers for about five years and it was the biggest pain in the butt, taking up cooler space and selling them at farmers markets when you got 20 other items that make way more money that need the space. Plus, I’m not a flower person, that’s my wife’s thing.

@@kingrigidthedeplorable2720 acually neither. They are fairy easy to grow and I spray them right along with my other crops and I've always made decent money on them. The reason is three fold; all of my help is back in school after labor day and I'm alway short handed during the week, my dads health has deteriated and I need to help with grain harvest in late Sept and Oct with my little brother and when I'm harvesting and selling pumpkins I am never able to help, and my favorite time of the year to travel and RV camp with my wife is during fall and I'm a big backpacker as well and I've missed out on doing these things as much as I would like for the past 25 years.

Wouldn't a white plastic be better for your rows ? Black attracts heat, white is nearly neutral. I painted all my 27 1/2 gallon plastic drums with tomatoes and peppers white, and I have noticed they stay moist longer. They were dark blue..
Actually part of the reason for using black plastic is for the heat, it brings on the crops much quicker and crops like tomatoes, peppers, melons and squash love it. White plastic is best for cole crops like broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower.

Pick your own cut flower farms are becoming all the rage these days. While you wouldn't need to utilize the entire wheat field for something like this, perhaps a small portion of it could be. Regrettably, you'd probably have to wait until next year as it is too late now for sowing proper cut flower varieties.

It would but I still have 4 acres left to plant over the next 3 weeks so I don't need any more ground. No flowers at market, just for my wife to look at and pick...she's awesome at landscaping our home and loves flowers.

@@markyork1 Lol, I'm sure it was a boring lunch...but I do film my dinner prep on my kayak camping trips along rivers that I paddle, I bring all farm fresh veggies from our farm and always cook up something amazing!

Lol, if I needed more sweet corn ground That’s what I would be doing because I can really control the weeds well in sweetcorn. Pretty sure it’s gonna end up being wildflowers. That walk behind sprayers actually spelled Mankar. Probably some fancy Italian word ha ha

Not planting pumpkins this year...for first time since 1999 we won't have pumpkins because we are scaling our operation back a bit this year so my wife and I can finally take our October bucket list RV trip through New England! and got plenty of lopes on plastic, plus I sold my notill transplanter, but thanks for the feedback!
