I read The Awakening for a college class, along with several others, and that book touched my soul. I have since reread it and it still impacts me in a big way.
Great idea to read older books in August! I'm trying to do the same. For me, Honeygirl wasn't very good. I hate the accidental marriage trope, and I'm not into romance in general. I really liked The Secret Life of Bees. 10 Minutes, 38 Seconds... is emotional and beautifully written. You have some great choices!
The Secret Life of Bees and The Last Animal have been added to my shopping list. The book 10 Minutes 38 Seconds… has me intrigued. I am arguing with myself…can I handle this topic or not? I haven’t had any coffee yet. It is too early for this debate. Dear Edward was a 5-star read for me. While it covers a devastating event, it is full of hope. I read Sarah Addison Allen’s duology, The Waverly Family, and gave each book 5-stars. You just reminded me that I own Other Birds. I will add that to my August TBR.
I hope you enjoy them if you pick them up. I just finished 10 minutes 38 seconds and it was really good, but definitely TW for violence, childhood sexual abuse, trauma, etc. It isn’t explicit, but it is mentioned throughout. Beautiful Country is one of my favorite memoirs! As for short stories, I think that you would like Bird Songs Don't Lie: Writings from the Rez by Gordon Lee Johnson.
So many good looking books! I haven't read most of these! I read The Secret Life of Bees and Things Fall Apart a long time ago and don't remember them super well. I read Salt to the Sea a few years ago and it was alright. I really liked Other Birds!
Thank you! Yeah. I need to do better about moving through some of the books that I’ve had sitting for a long time. I know so many of them will be excellent reads. (tempering my expectations for Salt to the sea)
Oh Axiom's End, interesting! Read that when it came out because I'm a huge fan a Lindsey Ellis -- she was (is?) a huge CZcams essayist and I love her work
I thought Afterparties was a really strong debut; tragic that So passed at such a young age. I think my criteria for keeping books is similar to yours. I consider whether I might reread it, how strongly I feel about it, etc. Your August is looking good!

She is a completely new to me author, but that all bodes well for me. :)
We are having a book swap in August with my family. I only keep my books from my favorite Authors like Kristin Hannah and never give away Fantasy.

I didn't like the Secret Life of Bees. It was not for me. But i loved Salt to the Sea.
