  • Most of the questions I get asked on a daily basis are wonderful to hear. It shows people care about their animals and want to improve their husbandry. But I can't lie, some of the questions asked are just kinda stupid, from poisonous pythons to weird hybrid breeding ideas. Today, I highlight a few of my "favorites".

      I honestly don't mind the "Can it bite" questions. I think most of the time people are really asking if it will bite and if it's in that animal's particular behavior to bite, not if it physically can. Which imo is a very valid question. I wouldn't say any reptile that was raised right won't bite. I have a gtp that was raised very well and it still has an attitude. If someone were to run up to me and pet it, they'd probably get tagged. If someone ran up to me, asked if it bites, and then kept their distance after me saying yes, that'd be much smarter. I also have a leo I got from someone as a retired breeder. While I take good care of her, I don't think she got much interaction from her previous owner so she does try to bite sometimes. It's good to ask that question rather than assume an animal's behavior. Regardless of how they were raised or even if they're typically considered a mild mannered reptile like a leo.

    • @surtu9221
      @surtu9221 Před 5 lety +10

      Theoretically speaking, on the one blue moon day you didn't lock up properly or someone was helping you right before a big New Years party, the snake could escape it's enclosure, make it to your toddler's room, randomly decide to grab and wrap the child, the child would be unable to breath properly to call for help and you're still at the party downstairs and can't hear the baby monitor, and even if the snake can't successfully ingest the toddler it might panic and summarily asphyxiate them...
      ... But your child has a higher chance of being killed by the family golden retriever, or one of the visiting New Years party guests, or *lightning.*
      You probably get asked the question enough that it annoys you that people think you put no thought into the care and keeping of your own animals; they're acting like you're naive or delusional. I'm assuming the reason your snake has padlock on its enclosure is because you both respect and care for the well-being of the snake and have thought of the ways it could potentially escape and do harm unto itself, and for the snake's best interest have made it difficult to escape. Even that much foresight is likely enough to prevent weird hypothetical scenarios from ever playing out.

      @@irondolphin9387 Well usually when I've lost my mouse I get another one. They're really good at escaping their enclosure. I think the stupidest misconception about feeding snakes frozen foods is that they have some sort of hunting instinct that only live can satisfy. This goes back to the tendency for certain pet owners to assign canine behaviors to their reptiles because it's easier to understand. Snakes don't have a hunting Instinct. They're opportunistic feeders. In the wild they are just as likely to eat something recently killed on the ground as they are to strike live prey. And snakes don't hunt. They wait for a field mouse or a frog to come to close to their territory and strike when opportunity presents itself. They have no instinctive desire to chase down prey in most situations like wolves do. They wait for food to come to them
