  • This performance of 'But Not For Me' by Judy Garland is in the film 'Girl Crazy' with Mickey Rooney, 1943. 'Girl Crazy' was the last of the Mickey/Judy "backyard musicals". Previous Mickey/Judy musicals of this genre included 'Babes in Arms'(1939), 'Strike Up the Band' (1940) and 'Babes on Broadway'(1941).
'But Not For Me'was written by Ira Gershwin, music by George Gershwin in 1930.
    Old Man Sunshine listen, you
Never tell me Dreams Come True
Just try it and I'll start a riot.
    Beatrice Fairfax don't you dare
Ever tell me he will care
I'm certain it's the final curtain.
    I never want to hear
    From any cheerful Polyannas,
Who tell you fate supplies a mate
    It's all bananas.
    They're writing songs of love,
    But not for me
    A lucky star's above,
    But not for me
With love to lead the way,
I've found more skies of gray
Than any Russian play could guarantee.
I was a fool to fall and get that way
Heigh ho alas And also lackaday
    Although I can't dismiss
    The memory of his kiss
I guess he's not for me.

She was so unique, so talented, so broken - sadly it was on this film that it became apparent the "energy pills" aka speed the studio was shoving onto her had finally started to take its toll. Judy Garland owned and still owns this Gershwin song. No one, even with her forte performance as a guide, comes close to this nuanced interpretation. There are lots of opportunities for lesser singers to make it silly or even worse, make it the flat rumblings of deep depression. Garland sings it with exquisite appreciation of the warmth love could provide -- alas. I have often wondered if this unusual sensibility to human emotion in turmoil or ecstasy were part of Garland's brilliance and tragic misery. Kudos of course to the Gershwins whose music tapped into our minds' humor, longings, and loves. I have always loved the lines:
With love to lead the way
I found more skies of gray
Than any Russian play could guarantee

The lyrics here where Judy sings ' I'll start a riot' are eerily prognostic, as they portend to the emotional upheaval and events of the day she died. The night Judy Garland died the police routinely raided a gay bar in New York city called The Stonewall Inn that was having a lock-in until the early morning to mourn Judy's passing and pay their respects, after hours. The crowd in the bar were collectively mourning the death of one of the biggest and most fondly regarded Gay Icons of her era and were in no mood to put up with the tyranny and disrespect given to them by the police. They were so upset about Judy's death they fought back, for the first time ever a spontaneous fight exploded against the homophobic attitude of the authorities, aggression was met with aggression and unbeknownst to the people in attendance that night this was the violent catalyst needed for the beginnings of the Gay Civil Rights Movement. The Stonewall Riots aka The night Judy Garland died.

    • @2kiwis1aussie
      @2kiwis1aussie Před 4 lety +5

The Stonewall riots were 6 days after her death. It's only theorised that the patrons were celebrating Garland at the time; there's no significant evidence to back that up

A lyric from a song that's all - how much acid did you take?

    • @jonathankieranwriter
      @jonathankieranwriter Před rokem +2

@Jorg Hannakh … eh, whether or not there was any connection resulting in some sort of direct instigation or retaliatory activity is almost irrelevant. Those riots did indeed occur six days after Garland’s actual death in London, but they commenced the very day *after* her public New York City funeral, which was indeed an enormous media and cultural “event” in the city, with some 25,000+ people lined behind police barricades to mourn publicly and view the body. That’s to say nothing of the millions in the city (and elsewhere) affected in different ways-sorrowful, regretful, angry, indifferent-by the major news of the troubled Garland’s demise.
One would have to admit that a significant membership of the city’s gay community, for whom Garland was, for whatever psychological reason, a towering icon, were probably quite deeply affected by the sheer proximity of her “circus maximus” funeral in their own town, the immense coverage, crowd experiences, the passing of a key icon, the tragic ending of a unique entertainment era represented specifically by Garland, etc.
People were probably feeling rather “moody about Judy” in the bars and hideaways. Again, it was the day after the immense impact of the funeral on the entire city. It’s obviously way too much to assert that members of the gay community took-up pitchforks, bricks, and torches and explicitly rioted with the words, “This is for Judy!” on their lips. No way. But it’s equally naive to think that the events surrounding her death and high-profile funeral the day before the riots began played no role whatsoever in the mood and volatility of a victimized, struggling group of people who identified closely with a perception of Garland as a victimized, struggling iconic individual.
Her death and funeral most likely played a strong socio-cultural, personal role in reactionary emotions that helped fuel the riots, among other persecutory factors-the timing and impact of her death/funeral are simply too big to ignore and Garland’s importance to the gay community in particular was too prominent to dismiss. It certainly would not be the first time in human history that the public funeral of a major figure (beloved or not) stirred up emotions that led to reactionary and even violent encounters and repercussions.
It’s probably best to admit that her demise/funeral played a part in prevailing emotional moods and tides that spurred such combustible reactions … but the role of her death/funeral in this matter is not quantifiable in any way. Almost certainly correlative, but not quantifiable.
It also bears mentioning that Garland certainly never “belonged” to the minority gay community alone. Gay citizens were often torchbearers for her legacy at a low point in her last years, but her final fate affected many, many more millions of people worldwide in mainstream society for whom she was equally beloved or fondly remembered.
In these times of CZcams and cinematic streaming, one is nowadays just as likely (or even more likely) to see Garland being rediscovered and appreciated in comments sections by little girls, young women, and people of all evident backgrounds rather than by one or several minority subsets of society. Which makes sense, because for the majority of her career, Garland was a huge star appreciated and celebrated by the masses. She was certainly no fringe or “cult” figure, even though certain subgroups of fans approached her work in cultic ways that would ebb and flow over the years. But that happens with any major entertainment or media figure, and, for some reason, especially with melodramatic, larger-than-life female entertainers. There you have it.

Hot take: This song is bad. The melody is decent, and even compelling at the apex of the choruses. Garland sings it well, and the last 32 seconds are excellent, including the tear on "kiss." It isn't particularly out of character for a Gershwin song.
But the lyrics are way too witty to serve as the emotional heart of a show/movie. "I'd start a riot"? "Bananas"? "Russian plays"? These sound like light little whimsical metaphors suited for a patter song. Nobody would say these things while in the midst of a genuine emotional crisis. Judy sounds like she's doing farce when she has to say some of these weird things, and it doesn't make any sense for her to be moved to tears just seconds later. Either the song is serious and sad, or it's a snappy number for the Gershwins to showcase their wonkish lyrical cleverness. It doesn't work when it tries to be both. An audience might literally laugh 2 or 3 times within a 2-minute song that is allegedly supposed to show how un-ironically devastated the lead actress is. That's not the vibe you want.

@@rx1201 I don't know why it isn't a hot take, just because you don't like my opinion of this song. I don't see a lot of other people with my opinion. That could make it a misguided take, but it's clearly a hot take. I know quite a bit about the output of the Tin Pan Alley songwriters--a lot of their material is genius, including things from Gershwin. The fact that this is a bad song that awkwardly tries to do too much doesn't take away from their genius.

    Ella Fitzgerald did it better!❤

I love Ella, but she takes a back seat to Garland here. In addition to singing like an earthbound angel, Garland had an uncanny ability to get to the meaning of a song, in a way Ella never quite did.

Beautiful... but Linda Rondstadt did it better.
