What a surprise to see this reaction video on Gfriend! Let me try to answer a couple of questions you had on Gfriend.
    1. Gfriend is known for singing live for their performance. Their vocal ability is well recognized in the industry.
    2. Dreamcatcher debuted in 2017 (although Minx started in 2014), Gfriend debuted in 2015. By the time Dreamcatcher rebooted with their new name, Gfriend was a well-established tier-1 girl group within the Kpop realm.
    3. Three members of Gfriend, Eunha, SinB and Umji, formed Viviz who is active as a new group and caused the stir with their recent "Maniac" choreogrphy.
I Want to express my appreciation for your professional and insider look of Gfriend's Love Whisper as a choreographer. Your expertise is clearly evidenced by your willingness to look through their dance practice, choreo video and the MV before offering your observations, so that your comments can adequately reflect more accurately the technical context and artistic choices taken within the choreography. It's also insightful to comment on the execution of the choreo on different surfaces, a point seldom noted by others I saw. The little pond in the MV was an artificial pool prepared for the comeback. Gfriend members commented how they had to mark spots of rocks to avoid during the shoot.
It's also quite informative to hear your comments on the movements of members during the choreo. Your remarks about the priority of dancing and singing in different eras for Kpop groups show your understanding as an industry expert who examines the choreo within the professional settings and the market demand. The creation of the choreography is more than just a technical exercise but a tool with a commercial element. BTW, the emergence of Gfriend was generally attributed to the emphasis on synchronized dancing for girl groups and raised the bar for the girl groups who came afterwards.
Thanks for the reaction and hope to see you again.

Gfriend were basically a proof of concept for the kpop industry in that they showed that girl groups can handle complexity in their choreos.
You can pretty much draw a line in the timeline and see a sudden sharp rise in the difficulty of GG choreos once Gfriend came onto the scene.
It can be easy to take for granted now that every girl group is going hard in their choreos but at the time they were absolutely groundbreaking.

@@jess_holyfield I will be there with you if you do. I love this reaction and the way you break everything down is more detailed than anything I have seen before. Thank you for taking the time to look into GFriend. As you mentioned in commentary, this was ground breaking at the time in girl group choreography and on the reality show Produce 48, the trainee idols burst into tears when they drew this song out of the hat which they would have to perform in front of judges. So the producers invited GFriend in to help them to manage it. It was the equivalent of the 4 minute mile back then, seemingly impossible to do but years later it would now seem like a piece of cake to those who come afterwards pushing their own new boundaries. Dreamcatcher debuted more than 2 years after GFriend did and by 2017 GFriend had already won 29 music show trophies in 2016 with just two songs. They had also already won Dance Performance of the Year for Rough and were vying with Twice to be the top girl group in Kpop. Remarkable for a group from an unknown tiny company that was bankrupt from the start, before they eventually made it rich singlehandedly as the only artist at the company. The CEO had to remortgage his house just to pay for their debut and they wore school gym clothes for their TV performances of their debut song. Love Whisper was more than 2 years after this difficult start.

@@jess_holyfield there are always the odd exception of course but the Buddy fandom is renowned for the kindness of its fans towards others. This reflects the genuine, humble attitude of the GFriend members themselves and everyone who meets them in person backstage away from the limelight says they are a delight to know and work with. Kany is the latest to say that about the VIVIZ members after working with them for the first time for Maniac and Untie. She said that she never met any artists as talented as they are who are also so sweet and humble. She decided to sign a permanent contract with their company as a result so she could see a lot more of them and celebrated by taking them all to a Shinee member’s concert the same day as it was announced, where they got a shout out from the stage. Kany had worked with them before VIVIZ. So expect a lot of passion and enthusiasm from GFriend fans for your reactions to them and you needn’t be afraid of expressing honest opinions about them at times as you will still get respect for your opinion even if it is not popular. So many new reactors to them have subsequently commented on later videos that everyone was so nice that interacted with them and I am proud of that. Long May that continue although reactions are few now which makes yours even more precious.

@@jess_holyfieldif you do decide to focus on GFriend for a dance marathon in the future make sure to include their blindfolded challenge for Apple and Mago as well as their regular dance practice. There is also a hilarious video you could watch when we are given a behind the scenes cut of the very first time they try dancing a song blindfolded and the chaos that ensues. It is so funny but also shows how comfortable they are at making fun of themselves to entertain their fans because they know how good they actually are and are confident that the entire industry knows it. Weekly Idol kept calling them GodFriend on the show as they invented x2 dance live on the spot when a fan sent a message live on air wondering if they could do it. They used GFriend as a test case after that to try out new dance challenge concepts for other Kpop groups appearing on the show. If GFriend couldn’t nail it then they would drop the idea as it was clearly impossible. Random Dance and Rollercoaster Dance all became regular features once GFriend succeeded at them and then the hardest of all when the two were combined together in one challenge. Dancing to songs which randomly change at any moment, leaving everyone in the wrong position to carry on with the next one is hard enough without having it speed up to x 2 speed, then reverting to 1/2 speed or normal speed again at the very worst moments such as when you are in mid stride of a dance move. It is very entertaining but very difficult so few attempt it other than GFriend.

VIVIZ perform singing live at every concert and festival as default which involves all of the members using hand microphones to get better audio quality. This makes the complex hand movements in their choreography particularly difficult to manage sometimes which resulted occasionally in one of them dropping their microphone. But vocals come above everything unlike many big name groups who just wear head microphones for their concerts and performances where the volume is too low to even know if anyone is singing at all. But they sound perfect as a result with no added difficulty for their choreography either. I like to hear vocal imperfections in the singing which indicates they really are singing live or subtle changes to the studio track which shows the same thing. But music shows has virtually everyone either lip syncing or having auto tune used to correct anything pitchy in a live vocal so hand microphones are not useful at all which is why VIVIZ can show the full choreography there by having head microphones as a rare deviation from what they would prefer to use.
GFriend choreography was always created with live vocals in mind. The person belting out a high note would hardly move even if everyone else was spinning around them and whoever was singing each line would be at the side on their own or in the centre and with the easiest choreography for that moment. This allowed them to sing live and still dance hard. One iconic performance was when the audio track broke down during the first verse of a song and GFriend just continued on singing live a Capella to the cheers of Buddies, their fandom. It was even better than the album track!

When Gfriend debuted in 2015 they were known to have the most difficult girl group choreo at the time. I think they helped make girl groups have more details in their choreo and helped encourage girl groups to be dance oriented in general
They sang live a lot in the beginning. It faded out some towards the later half of their career, but they always had at least a couple of noticeably live vocal stages or more per comeback. Viviz doesn’t seem to sing live as much as Gfriend did, but they always have at least one noticeably live vocal stage per comeback.

There was a controversy about this choreo years ago.
between taemin (shinee), kai (exo) and yerin (gfriend) yerin said this choreography was "tiring"
so mcs "mocked" and said it wasn't hard
They asked taemin if it was a hard choreo and he said that there were technical details aspects and footwork.
and when Kai was asked he said that he does men choreos and that choreography was not hard for him.
gfriends fans got angry at that comment and said he was putting down girls groups choreos
and Some others people said taemin sugarcoated his words😁

      @jess_holyfield  Před 4 měsíci +1

This is VERY interesting! I can understand the controversy based on what you provided! I feel it truly depends on whether a group sings live, mixed with complexity and bpm. That’s how I measure difficulty a lot of times… if you also factor in what everybody’s starting implicit postures and training, a style that is “simplistic” to one dancer could be more difficult for another… it’s all in how you look at it!

    • @peterhugo2078

@@jess_holyfieldthis choreography was produced by the choreographer for BTS who did this as a favour because the CEOs of Big Hit and Source Music were best friends and it would improve the quality of Gfriend’s dancing to be tested to a new level. This was a challenge as he only choreographed boy groups and he added to add some cute elements to what was a highly technical dance for a girl group back then. They practice the choreography so many more times than other girl groups because they need to in order to achieve the level of synchronicity they manage to do and which was by then expected from them. So the heel toe move repetition made their heels really sore and they said it was the hardest choreography they had to do. GFriend even performed this singing live on a music show dancing in a pool of water throughout which I think was groundbreaking back then.
Significantly the boy group’s comments downplaying the difficulty may have been related to the fact that BTS was amongst their biggest rivals at the time for top boy group and it was very well known that this choreography was created by the dance teacher for BTS so it could have also been indirect subtle shade directed back at them.

I absolutely LOVED this video. I feel so lucky to be able to listen to your insightful and informed comments about what is one of my favourite choreographies of GFriend. I loved also how a smile slowly grew across your face as you were watching and this became nearly a permanent fixture by the time you were watching the choreography version. My expression was a mirror of yours. Haha 😛. GFriend does that to me and when people enjoy watching them too it doubles the warmth of my happiness. So thank you 🙏.
I learnt so much from this video and I felt like you had given me a private lesson by the end! lol 😝. I would really love to see you give a similar treatment to GFriend as for Dreamcatcher as they have so many similarities whilst superficially polar opposites. Such an apparent paradox but best explained by saying that Dreamcatcher is the dark version of GFriend. I think that most people who love one of these groups would automatically like the other too but it is hard to explain why.
I cannot wait for the day when I spot another GFriend reaction from you. But have you thought of reacting to the choreography for Maniac and Untie by VIVIZ. They have both gone viral for the dance which was created by Kany who previously choreographed Beyonce. I would love to see your breakdown of those choreographies as well as for other GFriend songs.

GFriend were know for being a vocal group and singing live was the normal thing for them when it was possible. Backing tracks were sometimes turned up too loud on music shows to hear their live vocals though. When GFriend performed on their first ever concert tour with no supporting acts touring with them, the concert lasted for 3.5 hours and they sang live throughout with a live band giving great energy to the performance. This sounded even better than the studio versions of the songs we usually hear. They learnt 48 different choreographies and performed most of them at the concert whilst singing live. I find that mind blowing as there are so many changes of position and essential perfect timing for certain moments I don’t know how that is even possible, especially with all the lyrics to remember as well and who sings what when. Many were B sides never sung live before too. If you do a Deep Dive into them and watch this I am sure you will enjoy it.
