Military Flashlight LED Upgrade!

- This is the Fulton Industries LED conversion kit for the MX-991/U flashlight. These are iconic military flashlights, and when I was a kid, they were cheap and easy to find and surplus stores, so everyone had them. This Fulton LED upgrade makes the flashlight a lot brighter, but still not even close to the light levels of modern handheld lights. this is a cool mod though if you have a much beloved old surplus light and you want to brighten it up a bit.

super cool 70s flashlight
I got one of these from Japan in the early 90s of all places. The store probably got it from the US base there. Anyway, I easily converted it by using the bulb from a Rayovac LED flashlight.
I did this some years ago, did not know I could have purchased a conversion kit. I spent hours piddling around. Was worth it though, I still use and have it clamped to my pack strap. I do find the green light disc is no longer as green as it was with the old bulb. It's much lighter but not an issue.
I've got one from my time at Benning. Gonna go find it
So the Silent Hill Flashlight is this model.
and The Last Of Us
I think the one from Uncharted too
I got one issues to me in Basic training in 2010 😂
I have two…one’s a Rothco and one is real surplus. Might get the LED for my surplus one
Ahh brings back memories from boot 😂
I bought one of these at tractor supply recently. Was already LED and runs on 6 AA so it last a pretty long time. All aluminum construction, water tight, came with 4 colored lens’s. Honestly it’s brighter than my absolutely massive deer spotting light, it’s insanely bright. And I think it was under $20
Dang. Too bad I hadn’t seen this a week ago
Awesome!
I don’t have one 😔
I have four 😅
And now I need this conversation kit. Ok, at least two kits.
😂 It is really nice to have the LED, but these flashlights just don't feel the same without the weight of the D cells.
@@Factor85Labs I don’t doubt that a bit 👍
I don't have one I have three
@@Factor85LabsI know this is about 1 year from now, but is the battery conversion also required? You already replaced the bulb, but is the battery conversion also required?
No, you don't have to swap the batteries. You can swap just the bulb. 🙂
Thanks
Maybe try a battery insert that replaces D cells with several AA or AAA cells and use an LED designed for that much voltage.
I have exactly this one but with "idf" wrote on the side
I have one with the led
honestly it has so much place inside of it
just put some li ion cell and modify bulb socket and put a 9w cob there
add usb charging step up to make it run for even longer and u got realisticly about 7 hecto lumens.
If you want u can even add a brightness control knob by modifying the step up module
many things to do there tbh
I was thinking the AA battery conversion wastes some space that could be used to store up to 8-10 extra AA batteries around the circumference and they could make the C to AA conversion insert once piece. Your idea sounds a bit too complicated but you should DO IT and make a video
@@Hjerte_Verke assuming i had a military flashlight and wasnt lazy i ve made few lights but i think this would be hard of stuffing it all in
I would rather make a flashlight with meds container like i did
Why would u want it to be double A battery lol doesn’t the D battery last longer
My guess is to save weight mostly.
и пожалуйста напиши как найти этот набор что бы купить его , заранее благодарю за помощь
I just bought two of these lights. I changed bulbs and it got a little brighter, but not like this. Do you have to use the battery adapter? Or can you just replace the bulb?
the battery adaptors won’t do anything but make it lighter (as in less heavy 😂) AA and D cells have the same voltage, D batteries just last longer because they have a higher capacity
I prrfer incandescent bulb
Can i request the link where to buy online that conversion kit thanks
I put a link in the video description.
Russian, извини что пишу на русском, пожалуйста скажи, как работает фонарик с этими переходниками , просто меня эта тема очень интересная, я это делаю с переходниками с ааа на аа
does the battery size make a difference?
Yes. Idk why you would want to switch from Ds to AAs
@@keegentilley578 weight
@@jimmyredd If weight is an issue probably should just get a newer LED mini-flashlight, these pack more lumens and weigh next to nothing. Having one of these older flashlights is more for collection and adding an LED just makes sense when nothing else is at hand.
@@b8702131 It's about minimizing weight while also keeping the cool aesthetic of the old light. Plus it gives you the option of using the more commonly available Double AAs.
D batteries have a bigger "gas tank" than AA's plus the extra weight of the two D batteries helps with the stability of the light when you're using it hands free and resting on its base.
How much
а посмотри такие переходники на две батарейки
What about battery life?
20 hours
@@gabrielvoth8811for which batteries? AA or D?
@@Terryg1968 AA
Cool is there a brighter light kit up to 300 lumins
You can put lots of different LED bulbs into the flashlight. Most of the "conversion" bulbs I've seen are in the 100-200 lumen range, but there might be some brighter ones out there.
@@Factor85Labs 200 with do just fine got a link to get one of these kits, the 200 lumens
@@spacedorito9812 Not 100% sure this is the right size, but I think this would work: www.amazon.com/dp/B00FOS7DSA
@@Factor85Labs thanks I'll check with my surplus flashlight to see if it fits
i want that flashlight how much for it?
i saw it fro the game the last of us
Not really that expensive if you get the cheap chinese knockoffs.
Obviously the AA batteries won’t give the flashlight that nice weight
