  • Plans for reparations are starting to emerge across the country after various measures have been under consideration for more than 150 years. However, what will these reparations plans look like, and how likely are people to accept them? Duke University economist and author of "From Here to Equality" William Darity joins Host Saraya Wintersmith to discuss the national debate and more.
    Plus - Tammy Tai, deputy director of King Boston, and Jemadari Kamara, chair of Africana studies at UMass Boston and a co-author of the Boston proposal weigh in on the local efforts of reparations and what they could look like in Boston.

    • @Shng275
      @Shng275 Před 2 lety +6

      @Isidro Paz I'm not a Democrat but I can help you out, pleighboy.
      For starters, out of the ppl you listed only Oprah would qualify. Why? Because she's a descendant of an enslaved AMERICAN. She's identified as "Black" all her life and has documented proof of her ancestors enslavement. Rachel Dolezal is a WHITE woman who wears makeup to claim to be"Black ". The majority of her life, she identified as a white woman and CAN'T prove she's descended from an ensIaved American. Kamala's father came from the Caribbean. That's not America. She wouldn't qualify. Obama's father came from Kenya. He's not a descendant of an enslaved AMERICAN. He wouldn't qualify. The ppl that immigrated here post-slavery, during the Civil Rights era, would also NOT qualify. Some of them may be descended from an enslaved, but they weren't descended from an enslaved AMERICAN. I'd qualify because I have documented proof of my ancestry, but ppl like Van Jones, Joy Reid, and Candace Owens wouldn't. They're ppl immigrated from the Caribbean.
      Simplified. If you have identified as Black for the past 10-20yrs, and have proof that your ancestors were enslaved by European colonizers HERE in the States, then you qualify for Reparations. Let's not forget the key concept of "Reparations". It's REPAIRING a wrong that was committed to a group of ppl. Every other group that's been wronged by this country has received their Reparations EXCEPT Foundational Black Americans. Whether it was the slave owners post-slavery, the Italian Americans in the 1890s, the Japanese in the 50s-60s, or the Native Americans in the 90s. There was no pushback from any of those groups receiving theirs. Even the excuse that's constantly lobbied against us about it being in the past, got contradicted when they gave Indigenous ppl their Reparations for atrocities that occurred hundreds of years prior. It's a debt that's OWED.
      Sidenote:. Reparations doesn't JUST incorporate slavery. It includes the FEDERAL Jim Crow laws, segregation, and redlining. Our parents and grandparents are STILL alive and can attest to those times.
      It's also quite interesting that you ask why should ppl who immigrated here post-slavery should pay for Reparations. For starters, if you come here you inherit the debt. Secondly, Black Americans paid for EVERYONE else's Reparations despite having no hand in wronging those groups. Lastly, you're thinking on an individual level. The Reparations debt is federal, just like the other's. The federal government should pay since it was said government that made the laws and the institutions. Take this pandemic for example. When there were talks of the stock market crashing, the Federal government pulled upwards of $5 trillion dollars out of thin air and infused it into the stock market. Look at this current war. They're sending BILLIONS in aide, yet won't give its own ppl that much needed support.

    • @Shng275
      @Shng275 Před 2 lety +15

      @Isidro Paz Ironic how YOU view America from a viewpoint of not experiencing or living through it's history. I've seen some good in America, but I've also seen and experienced for more bad throughout my 40+ yrs.
      America HAS made strides, but it seems like the more things change the more things stay the same.
      And miss me with "the world this, the world that". We're not talking about the WORLD, we're talking about the United States. If she truly wishes to be the beacon she convinced herself to be, she needs to right ALL of her wrongs.
      You keep looking at the Reparations discussion on an individual level. It's federal.
      Progressives, NOT Democrats, are trying to change this country for the better, albeit some of their decisions are just as backwards as the current systems. The Republicans, however, wish to keep everything the same thinking there's no issues. That's one of the main points of Conservatism, to "conserve" their way of thinking and lifestyle. Forget the fact that it only benefits a certain segment of society.

    • @Shng275
      @Shng275 Před 2 lety +4

      @Isidro Paz In what way is it discriminating against ANYONE!? It's a debt that's OWED and a wrong need righting. By your very notion, the wrongs that were committed against Foundational Black Americans should never be repaired.
      Hate to break it to you, but you nor I have a say so on what, who, or where our tax dollars go to. Take the war in the middle east for example. In 20 years, that war cost us $8 trillion. That money is GONE. They could've given a quarter or even half of that to Foundational Black Americans, and it would've stimulated the economy, created jobs, etc. They always use the excuse of giving US our Reparations will bankrupt the country, despite not seeing an actual price tag, yet they're constantly throwing money at everything EXCEPT its own ppl.
      Going back to your "discrimination" argument. How do you justify Black Americans paying for everyone else's Reparations knowing full well they had no hand in it!? In fact, we were STILL being discriminated against even when paying for their Reparations.
      Why do you ppl constantly like misquoting MLK!? Dr King was a progressive who fought for the poor and disenfranchisement. He spoke of the wealthy paying their fair share in taxes, as well as everyone receiving a universal basic income and guaranteed healthcare. He even advocated for Reparations back then.

Now we can all have college educated un/under employed.

      As far as I'm concerned, ALL whom have acquired wealth from the Slave trade must be involved in the repayment of the debt owed. This means companies like Walmart that were founded from funds that came from that families generational wealth (if in any way is traced back to slavery) would have to pay. You have Companies such as Marlboro Cigarettes, I'm pretty sure the initial investors used funds generated from Slavery when you trace it back. So what we have here is situation where americas corporations will be liable for payment and now we have an issue with the stock market because companies like this must pay out, you see where i"m going with this? The same type of issue will be mirrored in the private sector. If ones family wealth was acquired from the Slave trade they will need to pay too. This means there are PLENTY of resources for repayment since there are PLENTY of private and public entities that gained wealth from the Slave trade. THEY ALL NEED TO PAY!

We are owed and we should be paid reparations to compensate for the huge wealth gap that exists due to these racist institutions. Racism still exists. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was not final. It has been amended and ratified five times since then. We are still facing micro and macro aggressions daily. There is an easy way to decide this. (And this is a point I’ve heard discussed among black people for years). Every native black family and every foreign black person who immigrated prior to the Civil Rights Movement would be eligible for reparations.

      Making Juneteenth a holiday was another spit in our faces and most Black people either can’t, or refuse, to see the trickery. Juneteenth represents June 19, 1865, two years after the emancipation proclamation, when enslaved Texans finally learned they were free. That’s the day that Black people always observed very solemnly. Now it’s a “holiday,” a day on which ALL Americans get off work. What a gigantic spit in our eye. Who would reparations go to? That's easy, if your family is a descendent of slavery in the United States you are eligible. Not because you called yourself black for certain amount of years. Jamaicans, Africans or whoever else can look towards Europe. This is strictly an American (Black American) issue.

    It’s called inheritance!
    The same way that you have families still living off of and have been able to build upon and receive interest from the earnings from slavery by their ancestors from a 150 years ago, is the same way the descendants of slaves should receive their inheritance!

    We as Non immigrant Black United States Citizens need to concern ourselves with reparations here first. Our brothers and sisters in their respective countries can hold their own weight. We have too much work that has to be done here. We have just learned to crawl and now you are trying to earn a spot in the Olympics? Let's focus locally first. If you are in 12 feet of water and can't swim, your priority should not be to save someone in 5 feet of water who can swim.

When asked by other black laundresses why, she replied "I am trying to get back some of what they stole from me." Now it is time for their descendants to get the unpaid back pay.

    When it comes to black immigrants....whatever specific European country that enslaved their specific black country for example, black Brazilians should get reparations from Portugal, Jamaica should get reparations from England, South Americans should get their reparations from Spain and so on. Black immigrants have nothing to do with slavery and Jim Crow in America. This is not a problem what I explained above is the answer to the black immigrant question.
