50:26 You also forgot to mention that she was also a slaver who sold countless people to their deaths just so that she could get a drinking money. If Thor wasn’t worthy to be the Asgardian King because he’s drunk and fat, then Valkyrie is wayyyyy less worthy because she’s drunk and killed innocent people.
And the worst part is that since the characters (more like Taika and the Russos) considered Valkyrie’s track record of slavery to be in the past, they just forgave her and pretended that her crimes never exist. At least Wanda have someone calling her out (albeit too little). Valkyrie has none.

It's ironic how much Thor was hurt by Marvel's debilitating need to be constantly cracking jokes, because great comedy comes from contrasting personalities clashing in ways that feel natural, not every single character being the same kind of snarky douchebag who's seemingly always practicing his stand-up routine. A faithful portrayal of Thor would have made for a wonderful contrast to so many other characters, and therefore much funnier interactions.

    • @neodigremo
      @neodigremo Před 5 měsíci +21

They ended up having only 1 type of comedy towards the end of phase 1. Each character loses the unique style of humour they need. Tony and Spiderman can be quippy, maybe Hawkeye (but even then different flavours can be done with snarky, dry, deadpan or other).
Thor, if he needs to be funny, can provide humour from the oddity of a genuine godlike being being in a normal world.

Literally the ''Shakespeare in the park? Dost mother know you weareth her drapes?'' Scene in The Avengers was so funny because it's a 21st century billionaire playboy showman meeting a 1500 year old Norse ''God'' who's super serious. So yes, it's exactly as you say. The contrast would create the humor.
But fanboys only have themselves to blame for this one. People still claim Ragnarok is one of the best MCU films. It's one of the worst. Black Panther, Endgame, Ragnarok.

See my thing with Fat Thor is that could have worked more if it didnt have an air of humor to it. I personally always got the point of it being about grief and depression. But because they made it like "thor is fat, laugh" many people didnt take kindly to it. i always looked at it like damn he's really going through it, trying to cope but everyone can clearly see he is suffering and running away from it and not acknowledging his emotions. His emotional moment with his mom would have been more impactful if Thor was more fantastical. Playing into his Game of Thrones esc world would have made it great rather than it being sci fi but maybe thats just me

The biggest problems with marvel and dc is that when they hire people to adapt their characters, they pretty much always hire people that couldn’t give two shits about the source material, unlike lord of the rings, where you can clearly tell that the people behind that cared about the source material they were pulling from, and had respect for Tolkien and his work

    • @ccshumshum8104
      @ccshumshum8104 Před 4 měsíci +1

the source material wasn't written with the same care and depth tolkien novels are. comics literally come from low quality pulp fiction.
no one in real life is going to talk like characters do in the comics. even if there is some concept or idea that Thor was supposed to represent, it likely is something that is irrelevant today (such as how iron man represents american exceptionalism in the cold war). the serialised format is also fundamentally different owing to differing lengths and how impactful each plot beat must be.
barring Thor 4, Thor is exactly as he should be in the MCU.

The MCU Thor problem, much like problem with any project based on an existing IP that doesn't live up to its source material, is they keep hiring ignorant, dispassionate people to handle these movies. Not to point fingers, but you all guessed who I'm talking about. It's not even a question if the filmmakers are preexposed to the source material. They don't have to be gigafans, but at least their sensibilities have to fit in with the source material they're adapting. If you vibe with something, you can become a fan overnight. Chris Nolan wasn't collecting comic-books as a kid, but his sensibilities fit like a glove for a gritty take on Batman. Waititi's problem isn't that he's a comedy guy. Waititi's problem is that it's all he is. There are no layers to him. You could've done, in theory, a comedic take on Thor that still feels like Thor and can fill in MCU's quota for "it has to be fun or it shouldn't be made"; a Thor movie in the style of Pirates of the Caribbean or the first Hobbit movie. Instead, we got a Thor movies that are Thor movies in name only and could've been about any other MCU character, since there is nothing distinctly Norse or mythic about them. Thor doesn't act like Thor, characters from Thor's iconography barely appear or resemble what they're supposed to be, there are no grand adventures across mythic realms, there is no sense of verisimilitude, no earned drama, nothing. It's quite sad now that to the general audience the default image of Thor is a bumbling fool who speaks in plain Modern English and treats inanimate objects better than he does The Warriors Three and Sif.

The most ridiculous thing was how many times Thor is electrocuted. First by Darcy’s taser. I understand that he had lost this powers then, but in reality, a man the size of Hemsworth can shake off even a cop’s taser. Certainly not be knocked unconscious for hours while he is strapped down in a hospital bed, wearing a hospital gown. He didn’t wake up through all that from one zapped from a consumer grade taser to the god of thunder?
Then Valkyrie shocked him a zillion times and knocked his ass out. Not really a god of thunder? Before the fan boys repeat Taika’s retcon excuse that it was a neurotoxin, not electricity, that’s a lie. That was only after it was pointed out how stupid and wrong it is for a man who channels lightning bolts, which are more powerful than an atomic bomb, can be electrocuted by a tiny disk on his neck, like a dog’s shock collar.
It was not intended to be a neurotoxin. If so, then Taika didn’t do his homework because everyone thought it was electricity until he gave his bad excuse and fan boys lapped it up. He should have known that no neurotoxin makes static and crackling noises. Neurotoxin don’t make human nervous system sudden shake the same way a body would with electricity. Take a large dose of oxycodone and you will just go to sleep. Take the same dose of fentanyl and you will go to sleep and never wake up.
That’s how most nerve agents work. I know of none that make someone shake like that and neither does anyone else because everyone thought it was electricity after seeing the movie. When you use electric noises and have the actor shake like being electrocuted, that’s what the audience will think and will laugh that the demigod of thunder and lightning can be electrocuted.
Taika should just admit he made a mistake and wasn’t thinking or reading the comics at all, that’s because Taika has no respect for the character or comic and made the movie he wanted. Even a seizure is not as violent as electrocution. Seizures have larger muscle jolting, where an electrocution makes every small muscle jerk very quickly, like the way Hemsworth did in Ragnarok.
The MCU hates Thor. I don’t know why they even decided to use him as an Avenger if he was going to only be the butt end of everyone’s jokes? I only got a bit excited during Infinity War during the second half of the movie. Thor’s scene with a CGI raccoon happened to be one of the best scenes they ever gave Hemsworth to give Thor some depth.
His reveal on the Wakanda battlefield was the pinnacle of Thor in the MCU. It made me excited for Endgame, actually wanting to believe that they would take Thor into a dark place, but not the fat surrender ass we got, it someone on a path more like Ronan. Why’s is it that Hawkeye gets a better depression actions more interesting than Thor. Imagine Thor going that dark and the damage he could do, but only if they gave him the real Thor power like in the comics?
Thor would not give up and get fat. Thor should have wanted retribution, so when he got a chance to finally face a Thanos, he should have been a much greater foe for Thanos than Captain America. Fat Thor was funny for about a minute. Thor’s powers are magical, he shouldn’t have to work out to get strong. Does Superman have to do reps at the local gym to stay buff?
It would make more sense for Hawkeye to get fat. He’s just a human and lost his entire family. Thor isn’t human, he shouldn’t get fat. When I saw that first scene, I thought that once they told him they could get another shot at Thanos, he’d call down lightning and Boom! He’d be chiseled Hemsworth once again.
Nope, we were stuck with fat Thor for the entire movie. That sucked for Thor fans. Yours right, he was just a menace on the battlefield. When Captain America has to save your ass, you’re not much of a superhero. Thor should have been able to at least hurt Thanos, even with his bare hands.
They destroyed Thor in Endgame. Tony said it right calling him the big Labowski, because that’s what Thor became. He’d have been more at home in movie The Big Lebowski. I was so disappointed when I came out of the theater after Endgame and hearing everyone else excited about how good it was. Endgame sucked.
I thought for sure they would let Thor do the snap? Why not? He was the one who felt responsible for allowing Thanos to snap everyone away. His redemption arc would be snapping everyone back, even if he died doing it. I would have rather had Thor go out a boss, like Tony did, rather than continue on with this pitiful Thor character the MCU has created.
They couldn’t even give us that, instead, Banner gets the snap? It may make sense because he’s the strongest, but there is no through-line between Hulk and Thanos. That’s bad storytelling, like Arya killing the a Night King, it made no sense. She had no run-in with the villain until five minutes before she easily killed him. Everyone knows it was supposed to be Jon Snow. What? The Hulk lost one fight with Thanos?
Thanos killed Thor’s brother and best friend and Thor had a chance to kill Thanos, but instead decided it torture him for the pain he has caused Thor. Like Thor told Rocket, “what else can I lose”. He was in the depths of despair then and that was before the snap. They didn’t pay off Thor’s best scene in the saga. Big deal, he got to kill weak Thanos, with help from Captain Marvel, of course, in a seen so short that if you stopped to get popcorn you would have missed it.
Thor deserved more for everything he had been through. They could have paid off all those crappy Thor movies that came before by letting him do the snap or at least really injure Thanos in the battle, rather than just having his ass handed to him time after time. I’m done with the MCU.
They also destroyed Captain America when they turned him into a coward version of Joe Biden. “Screw this world, I’m dancing with Peggy and will use my super soldier endurance to win dance marathons”. Twinkle Toes Ragers was his new name and he and Peggy danced in the police state that Red Skull had created after Hydra took over with their airships that could target any enemies from hundreds of miles.
Great job Marvel. At least you didn’t ruin Ironman. Tony got a boss ending, but poor T’Challa got to die offscreen from a virus? That makes no sense, any virus that can take down anyone who drank the purple juice would wipe out their entire nation. He had advanced healing, how can he die for the flu? It wasn’t even some weaponized virus made by an evil madman. That would be too much story for them to deal with, they need to get it over quick and milk whatever tears they could for poor Chadwick. They couldn’t even celebrate the character’s death by making it a sacrifice. What a slap int ej face of Boseman, he deserves better.at least give him a memorable death and go out a hero.
Since his uniform covers his entire body, he could have easily been taken out while saving the world, or at least saving Wakanda. The MCU loves giving the characters embarrassing deaths and endings. They have lost it and now it’s going to only be female heroes from now on. If Captain Marvel, with Brie Larson, is the best the MCU can do for a good female superhero, I’m out!

Honestly, they got rid of Asgard too quickly. Ragnarok should have been a much later movie. MCU should’ve stuck with the comics stuff. They should have had Hela be Loki’s daughter like she is in both Comics and Mythology. Let Hela rule the land of the dead, where she’s at her most powerful at. They should’ve replaced Hela with Angela. Like Angela is Odin’s first born; so why not have the movie about her and the realm she grew up in. Which brings me to the topic of how the MCU forgot to add many other asgardian characters such as Amora the Enchantress and Balder.

I really did like the 2nd Loki series which was in a multiverse - a different Loki, and they state right off it is a multiverse and a different "variant" Loki. So I can divide it, and in fact, it reminded me more of Dr Who, which is gone now, so I guess I have to take my Dr Who where I can find it. If you watch the 1st Loki series, one of the Lokis says he DOES get away from Thanos by using illusion. He teaches the protagonist Loki how to more fully explore his power and how many more illusion powers he has. In other words, the Loki that comes to that series does not have a full understanding of his power yet and is taught them - time control, mind enchantment, etc, by the many versions of himself he runs into. The Loki he runs into says, We are far more powerful than we realize. A fun concept.
I think the female Loki is meant to be a concept of the Enchantress - not a very good casting choice - while a good fighter and excellent enchanter, she is a complete failure as a person and is the one responsible for destroying everything through her insatiable and selfish desire for revenge. So she is broken and Loki has to fix the mess she makes. Now, according to ancient Norse myths, Loki was NOT the god of evil. He was a trickster, and he did some nasty things, but he was a helpful god who understood things didn't need to be done forthrightly all the time. People would pray for help in financial deals and such. The other gods would turn to him for help when they needed some streetwise help. He got the other gods out of many problems, which is why he was considered Odin's friend. He only became "evil" in the Christian era when he gathered the identity of the devil.

Thor should have snapped instead of Hulk and lost his arm. Thor felt like a failure because he did not stop the Snap when he could have. Hulk should have fought Thanos and become professor hulk. Hulk lost his friends and couldn't protect them because he wouldn't let Banner help him. Thor, now depowered legitimately, could join the fight against Thanos, but can't keep up, queue Banner watching Thanos almost kill Thor which brings out the Hulk finally. However Hulk still struggles against Thanos, and you have a nice quick scene where Banner is yelling at Hulk internally on how to beat Thanos. Hulk makes a deal with Banner, the deal is Hulk wants to WIN this fight, BAM Professor Hulk. Thor then could "retire" as an Avenger and take over as King of Asgard, and Hulk gets the much deserved rematch AND end his arc nicely as well. Lay down some hints that Thor and Hulk could return later down the line.

The idea a God who eats and drinks like a dumpster, must also be as fat as the mere mortals who also eat and drink like dumpsters completely misses the point of mythology and divine idealization. The concept also completely ignores all primary sources we have on Thor specifically, who’s described as powerfully built, and zero mention of being fat. So Fat Thor pisses me off twofold. The thing about Waititi though is he is a man of morals. He knows what he believes in and he isnt afraid to say that.
Cut to Love and Thunder. Hemsworth was sooo into promoting the movie and talking it up- until the movie came out and the backlash came out. Hemswroth immediately backtracked and began throwing Waititi under the bus blaming him for the “messages” etc.
Hemsworth killed his only relationship with a powerful/demanded/critically acclaimed director for the sake of not having a spine and sticking up for the film he made (he couldve just said “you know some people dont like it but i enjoyed myself and i like it regardless”). Hemsworth has killed any future for critical success as well. No serious director is going to hire him after seeing him throw a “good friend” director under the bus.

Drax’s portrayal has also been a pretty largely discussed topic at least from what I’ve seen even among casual movie goers.

I turned Atheist when the MCU started, so turning the Sagardians into magical aliens with advanced technology helped me develop an interest in them.
I am now more open to the idea of gods, so I can see your point, but it still helps when they are called gods on Earth due to their power.

Y'all even say as much in future movies like in Ragnarok when Thor calls himself the god of thunder, and Loki calls himself the god of mischief in infinity war. I'm sure there's more instances of them saying these things but I can't remember them at the moment, anyway it's just stupid to say they aren't gods when they definitely are

Totally agree with you about Thor turning into what Tyka wanted: to make him a dumb white bro.
Lastly, Loki went from twisted and brilliant to cartoonish and single minded.
High point of all the Thor movies I've seen was Hela. One of the best villains of the MCU IMHO

(There are so many serious batman portrayals nowadays that I just prefer to laugh with one every now and again.) But that doesn't mean I'd want someone to jump the shark and make Christian Bale into Adam West.

In defense of Endgame Thor, he was doing whatever it takes to escape the pain that he went through in the previous films (entire family dying, entire home destroyed, losing all your best friends, being defeated by Thanos and watching your brother die, then, after given a second chance with Stormbreaker, having your ego get in the way to the point that half the universe died because you wanted to showboat) and with finally killing Thanos, had nothing to distract him from said pain, he turned to drunkenness, sloth, and humor to hide the pain. The whole scene in Asguard was to give him the courage and encouragement to start living his life instead of running from the past. Being able to summon his hammer (not going to even attempt to spell it) was his proof that he is still worthy and gives him the strength to fight again.
As for the fight with Thanos, by the end of Infinity War (especially after killing Gamora), he was more into only kill those who needed to be killed and no one else. The final scene with him walking towards vision really showed that he is just knocking out or disabling those in his way but never killing them. When Thor showed up and threw Stormbreaker, many have pointed out that there is a rainbow in front of it and stated that Stormbreaker was actually teleporting Thanos' attack somewhere else. However, in Endgame, the Thanos there was not the philosopher Thanos that we watched in Infinity War but the battle harden/seeker that we got a glimpse of in Gamora's flashback. This was also a Thanos who saw his entire philosophy being shown as flawed when he was able to see his future death. Thus, his goal was not to let fate wipe out half the universe but to destroy everything and restart from scratch. This is why he was much more of a fighter than in Infinity War (since this time, he wanted everyone dead).
TL:DR - Endgame Thor was still a good Thor (though they could have pulled back on the jokes some) and Thanos was more of a beast in Endgame as he wanted to kill everyone instead of letting fate kill half.

Braeden, great video!! Again!! It would be really interesting/exciting to hear your version/plot for a new Hulk movie. Personally I argue the Hulk is the most demolished character in the MCU. But with the prospect of having some of the most exciting and also dark stories. Imagine a ”grounded” (horror) and character driven Hulk movie which focus on the hell it must be to live in a Jekyll/Hyde relationship with oneself where CGI is there to support (not drive) the story and show what destruktionen can come from his powers.

I agree that the MCU has gone way down hill over the years but I think you expect way too much of this franchise, especially expecting it to be more faithful to the source material. That’s not the goal in most of these movies, they have to balance fan service with maximum marketability, half of these side characters you’ve mentioned aren’t well known at all thus neither marvel Disney nor a large portion of the audience care much about the side characters and likely never would no matter what so they throw them in there for fan service and use them to minimally service the plot for the casual viewers.

Its kinda like going from one story line to another in the comics, certain characters have different motivations and slight alterations to their characters to fit that story better. The way i see it the MCU timeline is just the real world adaptation of an alternate timeline where stuff just happens differently to better fit the big screen, even tho it doesn’t always work. The MCU is still a-lot of fun imo. Not every project is an iron man or an infinity war but there is still some good left.

@@DatBoiGloomy I agree, I still enjoy some of the stuff that comes out, by that I mean most of the movies. But there are some movies where it’s like “really? What the hell were they thinking?” Like The Marvels had such an interesting concept to it, with the powers switching. But they managed to completely drop the ball and made a bland, generic, boring movie with a million plot holes and comedy so bad someone should be put in prison for it. But then I actually really liked Quantumania personally, I thought it was fun. So I don’t know people are a little too harsh on Marvel lately I think

From the moment I saw mcu thor I knew what kind of character we were getting, so I was the only one unsurprised by boomer Thor. As he gained more humor he gained more personality, and I saw it coming from a mile away so instead of being blindsided by the humor I was instead impressed by the serious moments like in infinity wars and parts of Ragnarök and love and thunders emotions. His dynamic with Loki is a constant source of humor for the both of them but it’s also his most meaningful connection, even above his father and Jane, and the humor in scenes like “get help” showcased that he was a goofy frat boy doing goofy things but he made an effort as he always does to do it with Loki. You claim taika ruined thor but he simply completed the transformation into joke machine (the goofy Batman pitch was funny though and they did do hulk dirty no one repeat NO ONE likes smart quipped hulk). Fat thor was a stretch (but still on brand), and thor has never really been all that powerful in the mcu (as opposed to other media) basically everything cool about him comes from his weapons and the fact that he can take a beating, so the infinity war bad ass scene was more out of character full strength then his true character (at least fir the mcu). As for love and thunder, it had its problems and it was rushed out and needed at least another 3 months of polish (in my opinion), but I don’t think it was bad (in that comparing him to comic thor all thor scenes are bad) I like that they actually tried to wrap up the Jane connection and tried to make an emotional end point for thor.
That being said thor from Earths mightiest heroes is the best version of thor, his rivalry with hulk providing a consistent interactions between the two and allowing them both greater versatility. His archaic manner of speaking and Lightning powers always made him stand out in a group of muscular heroes and his connection to Asgard was constantly brought up since there were Asgardian villains to pit against the group. Avengers assemble also had an excellent thor (again with a strong rivalry with hulk), including Asgardian plots for episodes, good archaic dialogue, and a more jovial thor who made it clear he wanted to hang out with the avengers and fight evil and vanquish them at video games; it was always more of an escape to that thor, a chance to get away from the boring, mundane, and formal Asgard.
As for the hammer, in the myths it is explicitly stated that Loki interfered with the forging of it and it was still the most powerful weapon in Asgard with the minor flaw that the handle was too short, so in that I don’t think their design was that bad
Also the planet hulk characters were so different I didn’t even notice them until you pointed it out and now I can’t unknow how they screwed it up

The answer is nothing, he will just die
