8:14 - Interestingly enough, Alan Ruck's tourist character originally died later on when all the passengers get off the bus; he actually fell instead of getting helped up. Test audiences found that to be too sad, and he ended up surviving.

One of the (many) problems with Speed 2 is that we're introduced to Bullock and Patric and they're already in a relationship that we're supposed to care about, but we don't because we're told they're in love but we're given nothing to back that up - they should have started the film with them as strangers, but the film was already too long.
Plus we're still caring about Bullock and Reeves' relationship from Speed 1, so it's strange to suddenly be rooting for Bullock and this other guy.

I like that Chris and Caroline kept having a laugh at "Pop quiz, hot shot!" from Dennis Hopper. It was the remembered line from the movie that I believe was used in the TV ads, I can't remember as it was nearly 30 years ago. I was 19 when this came out. It was a huge hit that further cemented Keanu Reeves as a major star and it just plain made Sandra a star.

C4 is completely stable until you introduce a catalyst into the explosive. You can shoot it, hit it with a a truck, set it on fire and it won't detonate. In vietnam some soldiers used it as fuel for cooking and fires. You need to introduce a detonator which is a smaller charge that creates a powerful shockwave that detonates the larger block of more powerful explosive.

Roger Ebert somehow liked Speed 2. About the deaf girl, kids crushing on adults were generally supposed to be cute & funny back then. I remember a family movie called Blank Check where a millionaire boy dates & eventually kisses an undercover FBI woman. As for the bus jump in the first film, Jack mentions an incline and they did use one behind the scenes, but I think the VFX department forgot to put it back in the shot.

@@DistractedArachnid Sounds like Siskel's review of the first sequel. People have noted that he's the one who's often bothered by gore. Quite frankly, he's the worse critic, imo. But it wouldn't surprise me if Ebert tried to bury some of his lesser-known blunders. Siskel said that he once suggested to do an episode in which they flip their thumbs for certain movies, but Ebert said that he has never switched his opinion on any movie. Yet there've been instances in which he tried to sneakily do so in their show, such as claiming that he liked Die Hard 3 just as much as the original.

I always remember this movie because I have a funny, personal connection with it.
When I was a little kid, my cousin and I had a week-long vacation with my grandparents. During the trip, we got to pick our own movie at the theater and go to it on our own. My grandparents would pick me up after the movie was done. It felt like such a big deal at the time because it was the first time I could make an adult choice on my own.
I was really stumped because there were two big movies in the theater that I wanted to see and had to choose between - Speed 2 and Batman and Robin (the terrible Mr. Freeze one). I picked Batman and Robin.
I still laugh about it to this day because my choice was between two of the objectively worst movie options I could have had at the time.

It's a little known piece of trivia that the script for Speed was given to a "script doctor" or two who were tasked with giving the movie more energy, fun, and humor. One of those script doctors was a young Joss Whedon (BtVS, Avengers 1&2, Toy Story, Firefly, Dr. Horrible, etc.) Listening to some scenes and dialogue you can really hear his contributions.

So while many of the action sequences in speed are obviously not plausible the bus jump was real. They obviously used a take off ramp and a stunt driver actually jumped the gap. Second if you look closely at the scene where Jack goes under the bus you can see that front bumper is moved way up from it's normal position to allow clearance for the cart and stunt man to get under the front of the bus.

I had the first Speed on VHS and DVD. The DVD had some behind-the-scenes stuff of how they did some of the effects.
My favourite was the bus jump because they literally got someone to ramp a bus at 50mph for the shot, then comp'd it into the final footage. The ramp they used reached 10 feet off the ground but even then the bus didn't cover anywhere near 50 feet. The front of the bus getting kicked into the air wasn't intentional.
Unsurprisingly, the bus wasn't drivable after that.

Trivia: the bus has a code in the bottom left corner of the windscreen that says EX33. This is a nod to the fact it was a re-painted Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) bus that was used on Toronto's "Forest Hill 33" route. I know this because my old high school classmate bought the bus and drove it from Toronto to LA for the movie shoot.
As for Speed 2...yeah..watch for the dog
If you want an even BIGGER cinematic bomb, watch "Cutthroat Island"

I love Speed it was one of my favourite films when I was a teenager, but Speed 2 is one of only three films that I almost walked out on in the cinema (the others being Jurassic Park: The lost World and Batman & Robin) I have only watched Speed 2 about 5 times since 1997 and only when I'm with someone else who has not seen it and I cannot convince them that it is bad before hand (I hated starting a new relationship and my new partner had not seen it).

Fun Fact. They actually did the bus jump twice. The first time the bus landed too smoothly. The bridge gap was put in digitally.

After watching this I don't want to go into an elevator, or get on a bus or get on a train or even fly in a plane that might get hit by a bus.

The reason why the director Jan De Mont made Speed 2 Cruise Control because He said He had a nightmare that a cruise ship crashed into an island. Ironically this is the same director from the original 1st movie of Speed. If He never had that nightmare, Speed 2 wouldn't have existed.

FYI : Roger Ebert actually gave Speed 2 a good review, and took a lot of heat for it. He responded by holding a contest for fans to create a Speed 3. One of the stipulations of the contest was that the movie could only be five minutes long, so there was no theatrical release. ;)

I'll always remember someone wrote in a review of Speed that he could've just shot the wheels of the bus while he was running alongside it and the movie would be over. Still love it and the sequel was my introduction to the great Wilem Dafoe (saw it on VHS as a kid) so it has a special place in my heart. It's so bad that I like it for the laughs.

But the tires get punctured going to the airport and they didn't slow down....

Wouldn't work. Shooting out the tires would either do nothing (we see the tires get punctured at the airport) or it would cause the bus to crash, causing a multi-vehicle accident and many deaths.
