Thanks for the tutorial! I built it similarly, but making a copper wire ring with the 6.8cm spikes soldered to it, it then fits on a panel-mount BNC socket, under the nut. It's my best ADS-B antenna yet, great reception! Furthest plane I saw was 300km away.

@@palawanese1067 can't attach it here. small copper wire ring about 1 cm diameter, the spikes are soldered to it, larger copper wire ring on the bottom ends for sturdiness. A female BNC connector goes through the hole and is secured with a spring washer and nut

Nice work 👍 Just a sugestion, you can straighten the wire before you cut it to length. Just calculate the total length before and use a drill at one end of the wire and at the other end a vise. Give it some tension and a few turns on the drill. Hope that this helps on future projects.

My build is similar. 4 wires are enough for the ground plane. I soldered them directly to a female SMA connector. The optimal length for the 4 ground plane radials is 73.2 mm according to the m0ukd antenna calculator. The vertical antenna wire is theoretically 65.4 mm long. I trimmed it down to the exact frequency while measuring the antenna with the N1201SA AAI Vector Impedance Analyzer. This resulted in a VSWR of 1.14. The optimal angle for the radials is 42° bent down. This angle can be slightly adjusted to match the antenna to the desired 50 Ohms of impedance. Measurement in the video at 9:44 shows about 33 Ohms of impedance, which is not optimal.

Velocity factor should be .66 not .95 as calculator does by default

Very late to this party but I'll add that I like Andrew McNeil's trick of cutting a plastic straw to the length of your wires. Use it as a gauge to slide over the wire and trim with your side cutters..
Measure once, cut 8 times, eh?

What kind of connector is that? Thanks, great video. Just starting with my first Pi.

Hi, What's the meter you're using?

What's the point in putting ring terminals on when you're soldering them anyway? Why not solder them in place? Also why are you so out of breath? I started to feel like I needed to find my ventolin puffer by the end of this, it made me feel asthmatic AF! D:

You got to be careful soldering because of melting the plastic insert.

painful to watch an American to attempt to use the metric system, when the yanks declared independence they should have used the metric system back then
