In becoming Magicians, we automatically assume a responsibility as representatives of how Magic is perceived. It’s up to us to champion and present Magic as a wonderful and beautiful Art. Magic is Dead, it is our responsibility to convince our audience to believe that it is alive, by any means necessary. Magicians, take responsibility, be amazing and prove to the world that Magic is an Art; alive and thriving.
Fanx for this video, Chris, protect the flame, keep it burning bright and make it sacred ❤️

Many fanx to you and Chris for showing me how cool magic really is.
I love that the method can sometimes be more magical than the effect. :)
It’s truly an art and you are both great artists. I will continue to strive to be amazing but just like music, no need to be a virtuoso for it to touch someone.
Just like punk rock, just get out there and play those 3 sleights with passion and put on a good performance :)

I am 58 and I have never seen a Magician live it is on my bucket list to see close up magic! Even though I might have the knowledge of how the trick is done. A magician that is good at his or her art form would blow me away!!! I have always enjoyed magic whether it is a performance on TV or a tutorial it brings a joy to my heart!!!! If the Magician show a card trick for example before the tutorial I always watch it back because it amazes me. And I cannot perform most of the tricks due to severe arthritis. And it is a performance not just a trick.

@Beltran Torres he had the chance to be a real "new age ambassador" of magic, especially close-up card magic at that rather than stage big prop magic per se
but i think shin lost momentum in "being an ambassador" because of his contract at The Mirage in Las Vegas. if he used his platforms and social media more to control the younger generation/audience, then he definitely could've been THE ONE to really change up the game completely.

From a former intermediate magician: One of my all time favorite performances was by Lennart Green on his TED Talk. The laser deal portion is among one of my favorites to watch. This DESPITE it being one of the easiest to understand simply because of his delivery and his fluidity. It's one of those examples I give as maybe something that isn't mechanically "hard" to understand the concept of, but to master and perform it in the way that Lennart does it takes long periods of practice and dedication. Also throughout the performance his sloppy on purpose lackadaisical approach while he knows exactly what's going on is perfect. I'd recommend watching the whole performance for anyone.

Chris I completely agree with you! I was at my kids school a couple of weeks ago to pick up school supplies. There was this card magician there he had stopped us and was doing a couple of tricks for us. And note that I have been watching your channel for years and I have watched your tutorials on sleight of hand and everything so I thought I knew how he was manipulating the cards and I thought I knew how it was going to end and where everything was but I was so wrong. He amazed me and my son. Magic doesn't die because we know how a trick is done it lives because we are still able to be amazed even if we think we know how a trick is performed and we are still amazed when we're wrong.

This was super interesting to think about. I've always thought that letting people in behind the curtain, about how we practice, how we think of new effects, the culture etc, would take away from the amazement and offer what could almost be called a pseudo-method. But you've made some really good points here. Going to have to mull this one over.

I remember when I 1st started watching magic videos that were teaching tricks and then started trying those tricks myself. My appreciation for magic grew immensely because I realized just how difficult magic really is. It takes hours and hours of practice to be able to perform a trick adequately. To be a true master really requires a dedication to the craft of magic and will take years of practice. Having this knowledge gave me a newfound respect for how much time and effort goes into actually performing that trick.

Chris, as a working magician I always tend to ask my spectators when or if they have ever seen magic in person before, and I have gotten the same amount of results when it comes to how many people have not. This of course excites me to be the first to show them some real close up magic, but it also reinforces that there will never be enough magicians in person to touch even a tidbit of our population. In times like these, where suspending disbelief can makes some one's day or even week, the more the merrier!! Online or not, people need magic in their lives so they can learn that nothing is impossible, and when you have something special you can do, you need to share it with the world, not keep it for yourself. That's what got me to change from a quite 12 year old with too many card tricks to even count, to go from showing only my family (who was bored of me performing by that point) to then go out and face my fears, and show some strangers some magic. Fast forward 20 years and you would never guess I was a quite person when I am performing. Both magicians and viewers can learn more about this important artform and I excited to see what is to come!! You have inspired me to post more online so I can reach more people and I can't thank you enough!!! Keep up the good work and when your in San Diego, CA ever, I have a place for you to stay any time. - @SkyKingMagic

The more you know about something, the more you are able to appreciate it in its entirety. Fooling, like you said, isn't the main aspect of magic. Magic is an art form, and should be appreciated in the same way that all other art forms are appreciated. A professional singer would appreciate another professional singer's singing more than an average person would. Why? Because he knows the mechanics behind it. The effort put into it.The beauty of it. He can wholly appreciate the skill, and not just be 'wow-ed' as other members of the audience would. MAGIC SHOULD BE MADE AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE! THANK YOU CHRIS!

I love this so much. Magic is an art form that seldom is performed with the appropriate reference. Showmanship is lacking in the biggest proverbial town square that magic has: the internet. There are excellent performers out there but too many magicians are content to perform something out of the box without putting any amount of themselves into it.

Thanks, Chris, for mentioning how important it is for others to appreciate all of the facets of the art form. Not simply the performance or the juggling or the patter, but Lassen’s incredible gaff work, the efforts required to make a good invisible deck at home, the psychology and curation of memory. One of my favorite moments performing was for a friend. When I was done, I showed him my TT. it was so fun to share in the stupifying wonder “how the hell did this hilariously unconvincing fake finger just fool me so badly?!” It improved the routine. And in the end, knowing it was there doesn’t mean that the billet switch was any easier or even explained…
The number of times I’ve fooled my wife with a stripper deck….🙄 that girl knows exactly what it is and how it works….

As a magic enjoyer, I do know some of the tools used in magic but I'm still amazed by even small things I see sometimes it's about how well it was done and some times it is that wonder of how it was done. I've been watching pen and tellers fool us and love alot of the tricks on there and even seasoned magicians like them still get that mind boggling wonder of how its done once in a while.

  • Josh strnad

Great thoughts. I've been a lifelong fan of magic, of the wonder it provides, and I've seen enough to have an idea of a lot of the basic types of tricks-- the knock knock jokes. I'm always excited to see new things that astonish me, but am equally delighted to see a standard trick well performed. Ir's interesting that Teller describes magic as the unwilling suspension of disbelief, because I've always found some of Penn and Teller's most entertaining content the pieces where they expose how a trick is performed-- the cups and balls with clear cups, for example.
I'm excited to see more tutorial content from you. As I said, I've always liked magic, but only over the past couple months have had the self-discipline to begin practicing some basic cardistry and slights-- doing the same moves over and over at my desk at work when things are slow (I'm a children's librarian, and want to pass magic along to the kids I interact with). Some of your videos have been instrumental in my taking that step. I have a LOT to learn, and feel like I'm playing catch-up, just starting out in my mid thirties, but I'm having a lot of fun so far. If you could produce a video of, say, five essential moves for every beginning magician to master, that would be very helpful to me.

I used to be really into magic a few years ago largely to you and your channel. Watching shows, learning techniquest, doing performances for friends, family and coworkers to the point to where it became my thing. Its been a few years now where I stopped doing it because I didn't want to define me and I felt it was becoming normalized and not amazing for others. But I am thankful to you for providing me the bare bones of magic, the basic structure. Now when I see magic I'm much more invested in the performance. Salut Chris! I started watching your videos with puzzles and the magic was a little bonus. Magic for me was always a little show where I try to figure out the trick. Obviously I don't believe in magic and always thought growing up that magicians were faking and trying to trick people thinking they do real magic. Then you showed up... you really changed the way I see magic now. I now appreciate the Art of Magic. I don't care about how the trick is done. Sure I like to know, I love when you show how you do some tricks but I don't seek the truth anymore. I appreciate the skills it takes to perform the Art. Chris, thank you for making this video! When I was younger I was included in a magic act on my birthday, it was at an amusement park, and not a normal stage show setting (Knoebles for anyone wondering circa 1994). That show allowed me to see through the veil a bit and it almost ruined my love of magic. The guy did a sword through my neck trick, but the prop blade concealed in the collar from my POV was super janky, and that almost killed it. After I discovered you a few years ago, your passion for your craft brought me barreling back into the child like wonder that magic is best viewed through. Thank you!!

Great video Chris! A lot of great points that needed to be said. Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if the actually stat is well above 50% of people who have not seen magic based on my experience when I perform. And that’s the real reason I do it…to share our art with as many people as possible and to get it out to as many new eyes as I can. I teach/perform magic on my channel to give back and share this art form. Internet exposure will never kill magic. Close-minded magicians will kill magic. Have a good day man!

I have been playing guitar for 20 years.. and I am still amazed watching some phenomenal guitar players play.. and I know exactly what he's doing.. you can see exactly what he's doing clear as day.. what impresses me is not that I have no idea how he did it.. what impresses me is that I know exactly how he did it.. it's extremely technical.. some of it I cannot do.. and yet he did it. Watching someone perform something flawlessly.. that they are so dedicated to and that they love so much.. is what impresses me.. the dedication and the love for the craft.

It’s your channel that largely ignited my love for playing cards and inspired me to learn magic. I was worried that learning methods would ruin the wonder of magic, but it has done the opposite. I love magic more than I ever have because I can appreciate the art form that it is. When I see a trick on instagram or CZcams I now recognize and appreciate how many hours, days, or years that person must’ve put in the get it down. I’m still so new to magic but I completely understand your perspective. As a musician of over 20 years I am always blown away by the skills and creativity of other musicians. That’s why I attend concerts and local gigs, because I love music and they inspire me to work harder and get better at my craft. I’m super excited to hear that you will be making more magic content because I love your teaching style and your passion for magic and its community. Thank you Chris!

I've always appreciated magic but the tangible love and passion you have is inspiring. I happy for you to have put both feet firmly in the path you want to take and I'll be here watching every step of the way!

I have always been interested magic, but man...your videos made me actually pick it up and take it seriously. I am one of those people that have never seen a magic trick in person in a sense that matters (sure, the uncle coin trick or a simple find the card trick that someone just learned to get girls). I appreciate this video SO MUCH and love your train of thought. Even knowing a bunch of methods and an analytical mind to try and figure things out, i am stunned by tons of magicians online all the time.
You do you first, plain and simple, but so many of us are with you. I am fooling my kids daily now. BECAUSE OF YOU!

This was a awesome video. I have just started to learn magic. I am turning 50 and this has been something I have always been interested in. I love all of your points. I know how some tricks are done but I still love them and like you still get amazed. I look forward to your new magic content. I have watched almost all of your old magic content.

Hey Chris, I love the idea of reflecting on the state of magic. I feel that there are still really amazing artists in the realm of magic that have chosen a more obscure path that bridges this gap between magic and artform(I'm thinking of people like Dan and Dave). Since you have the accesibility and the influence it would be really cool to get some of those people on the channel for interviews to talk about why they chose that path. I'm sure there is so much we could learn from those people who have thought about bridging this gap for a long time. Thanks for the thoughtful content!

Shows like “Breaking the Magician’s Code” made me inspired to see magic in a whole new perspective. It’s not just about revealing how the tricks were done, its the amazement of the audience that matters. All in all, its the performance.

Great video! I think what you said is relevant to most if not all art forms in our day, as the arts develop and the audience develops but the artists persist on staying the same and gatekeeping... Keep on the great work, excited to see you continue this inspiring journey!

Hey Chris, Thanks for existing. I love this rant, and all the insight. You nail it on the head and speak complete truth, and I truthfully understand every word you say. It’s kind of trippy, because I’m not an amazing “magician”, but I have been putting myself out there and performing live, and I’ve learned a lot about performing. But Im originally a professional musician, so I take a lot of what you say, from the perspective of a performing as musician , and I just gotta say, the similarities are real. Performance is real. Magic is real. Music and feeling is real. Art is real. It’s beautiful. Creation is real. Keep it up man⚔️

I fell in love with magic from the feeling i got seeing upclose magic two seperate times in my life. one time was in middle school, and someone at my church was performing for kids coming out after mass. everyone standing around was amazed or just having a great laugh with what he was doing. the second time was from another student at my high school who performs at the magic castle. She blew my mind with just a simple DPS card to pocket.

I've seen and been part of many magic tricks over the years and I have a greater appreciation for the magician and the techniques that are used to perform them not simply because I know how it's done, but because of the way its presented which in my eyes makes it truly special. To those who say what you're doing is wrong, I say to them that they are wrong. If not you and others like you I believe magic would still be in the dark ages or even dead by now. So thank you for all the wonder you bring to the world. 👍👍

I wish I could like this video 100 times. I was literally just feeling kinda bummed because I tried a trick for some clients at work and the guy saw or figured out the trick. I didn’t feel great about it but then listened to this video on my drive home and it really made me think about how much I do appreciate magic as an art form and as a feeling, not about fooling them. I can’t wait to see the direction magic is heading. Can’t wait to see what you have in store next Chris

One of my favorite things about you that has hooked me in was your comedic approach to magic while still continuously “wowing” your audience. As an amateur magician, I’m still in that obsessive state, especially in terms of Cardistry. I’ve been watching your videos from 4-6 years ago religiously everyday without skipping a beat. I’m excited to see you back in your natural habitat and I could literally feel the love and inspiration come back to you while watching your FISM video. Thank you for all you’ve produced so far and I will continue to support you and look forward to your come back!

    Chris this is so inspiring!
I started watching your puzzle videos a couple years ago and then your magic shortly after.
I love puzzles but your magic led me to other channels, Daniel Madison, Spidey, All your Big Trick Energy pals, Cavann Booth, Owen Oscar and so many more. Then local magic shops and local magicians. I've been practicing and learning everyday since.
I also am a guitar player and can see an analogy where a guitarist practices the same riffs and parts of songs over and over again into a rut. It takes inspiration from a mentor, friend, colleague, family, spectator to evolve.
The more I learn about magic the more I know I would never know everything but could collaborate and create. I've started taking magic everywhere pubs, work, parties. People either want to be amazed or they want to learn how to amaze. BUT the Key thing is they always WANT magic. Social Media is a great platform for magicians to spread their craft!
In addition to catching your inspiration bug I think Im coming down with some rambling on!
Great Video and Keep the Flame Bro!

Thanks for sharing. Your perspective is excellent to hear and I'm glad you chose to share it. The more I see in magic the more amazing I find it. I am excited to see to see magic continue to grow beyond its knock knock stage. Thans again for sharing!

I started get interested in magic few years because of your channel, Chris. I am never really interested in a routine or a trick but I am always fascinated by sleights and movement from your tutorials previously. I don't even know anything more than the ACR now but I got a dozen way to perform it just because I like practicing the sleights. Exposed to the sleights and techniques make me appreciate the art and magicians more than when I don't know anything about magic. I may not be able to get certain sleights down and I know the technique but I know when a magician performed it flawlessly, I know they have put their time and effort into that and that put themselves in a higher position than of those knock knock jokes magician; veteran or not.

Chris, I have been stuck in my head for a long time. I’ve viewed magic as a way to escape the microscopic world of reality and it has done me wonders. For anyone who suffers from the overwhelming dreads of reality, magic is an escape. A way to to make the mind move through wonder and astonishment. After retiring from the Marine Corps, I have picked up several decks of cards to keep my mind busy and with your help I’ve maneuvered through serious depression and anxiety, even if it’s just for fidgeting. Even performing techniques in the mirror make even me smile. With or without an audience but with an audience, it’s even better. Seeing the look on my kids faces when I perform a trick (even a dirty one with lots of flashing) makes my heart warm because I know they enjoy the performance. So, thank you. Regardless of what you do, you make people feel better, one way or the other.

This video just blew my mind ! im been doing magic for around the same time as you , around 20 years and been thinking something similar , recently i have been questioning a lot how magic is presented but i havent realized how important is that there is an audience that is knowledgeable to really enjoy this artform , to even consider it an artform. there is a lot to talk about this kind of subjects and i think its super important that magic is also talked like any art is talked among regular people. Cheers man im very excited for this new chapter in your channel and i got inspired to start sharing content more about methods and things like that in mine, im been restricted of doing it and now i realized that i doesn't make any sense. thanks man this was magic

This video brings me great joy. As someone who once wanted to be a magician who enjoys magic wether i know how it's done or not. I honestly felt discouraged in pursuing it. I knew a few effects some magic principle and other things but, if always felt like sense they try to keep it so secretive it's hard to find an actual good starting point and structure to even learn. How could it grow as an art firm without clear progression and starting point for new people who are interested.

Was really sad that you stopped doing magic vids but I kept going and next month we are opening the first ever Magic Cafe in Dubai! I set up an online magic store in the UAE during covid and now Brown Bear Magic Cafe & Shop is on its way to being a reality! I see the thrill and excitement in the eyes of everyone we share the idea with and even more so in the eyes of people seeing magic for the first time. Indeed magic is alive and well! Thank you for the inspiration and drop in for a coffee if you are ever in Dubai! 🙌

Hey Chris, I loved watching magic as a kid and performing for my family. I lost that in my teenage years. Just this past month I showed my own kids the David Blaine special where he performs Voyeur. I remember watching the special on television as a kid and how it was a pivotal moment in my love for illusion and misdirection. However, as a kid I was more in-touch with close-up magic. A few days ago I ordered a deck of cards and a close up pad with intentions to start putting some time into card magic. This middle aged guy is stoked to see what you're about to start putting out there for us all. Thanks in advance for what is to come and for being a part of what has kept my curiosity engaged about magic and mystery over the past few years.
