What’s the movie A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood about?
Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys from The Americans TV show) is an investigative journalist who receives an assignment to profile Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks from Forrest Gump, The Green Mile and Philadelphia), aka Mr. Rogers. He approaches the interview with skepticism, as he finds it hard to believe that anyone can have such a good nature. But Roger's empathy, kindness and decency soon chips away at Vogel's jaded outlook on life, forcing the reporter to reconcile with his own painful past.

When a whole subway filled with people all walks of life sing your theme song…. You did something incredibly right
Right on 😺🥃
The diversity of the subway singers says so much about today's push to put everyone into tidy boxes, whereupon an old white man like Mr. Rogers could never connect with these people. Which is sad.
@@hellogoodbye4061 Today is a much more accepting time than Mr. Roger's own time, thanks in part to Rogers himself. Remember, the episode where he and Officer Clemmens use a kiddie pool together was a protest against the fact that most public pools at the time outright banned people of colour. I'm 100% sure that if Fred Rogers was alive today he would be a firm and unwavering supporter of the black lives matter movement(not the organisation, these are not synonymous) and the lgbtqia+ community.
@@sebastienvondoom8615 Yes, more people are accepting of people of color and the gay community, but how accepting are they of straight white men - the latest subset to spit upon by society.
Mr. Rogers would need to get into a pool with a straight white man TODAY to overcome the prejudice towards this subset today.
Gays are mollycoddled like no other today and even the slightest slight is met with a vengeance akin to no other. You need to live in the now.
@@hellogoodbye4061 What you are experiencing is the classic quote "To a person of privilege equality feels like oppression."
Straight white men are not in anyway oppressed, especially not in America where you 99% of all presidents have been straight white men, there are still survivors of the Tulsa massacre and other similar massacres where thriving black communities were invaded and destroyed.
I love how Mr Rogers knew he didn't have to defend his work. When Lloyd brought up how dark some of the topics on his show were Mr Rogers just looked at him like "And..."? Mr Rogers was brave enough to confront dark topics for kids head on. Millions of us are thankful for that.
He discussed 9/11 & tried to get thousands of scared children to understand what happened. He shared the fact that he was dying and would be with us until the end of his life. Fred Rogers knew the best way to approach a hard topic is to break it gently with compassion. The man was really too pure for this world
The ironic thing in this scene is the subway riders were not mocking him, but rather complimenting him by singing his theme song. So touching.
Not ironic at all
He treated kids with respect. Something most adults don't do. He knew they could handle it and always had just one more question.
I agree, Especially in this current climate with all the drama around social issues and on the internet
Is it weird that I teared up when I watched this scene in the movie? How a man was able to bring everybody from all ages and different races to one world.
No, I did too
I bawled like a baby. I don’t understand how, but this scene really pulled my heartstrings.
I choked up a bit as well, not sure why, as this is perhaps the happiest moment in the film.
No. I'm a 40 yo ex-infantrymen and it made me tear up too. It's tears of awe. To see such good in the world. Pure, wholesome good. In a world filled with so much pain and hate, it's awe inspiring to see such pure good and wholesomeness.
no
When I was a kid I thought Mr. Rogers was a boring show. Maudlin and uncomfortably sweet. But you know what? I didn't live with danger or hunger or cruelty or indifference. Still don't. But for some reason now I can't watch this with a dry eye. This movie was SO well made.
Once when I worked in a deli there was a deaf girl named Angelica, she really had no friends except those who felt sorry for her. So once on my lunch break, I pointed at her and pointed towards myself and used this same sign a interlocking fingers, and she hugged me so tightly, I thought she was going to slap me, but she knows how beautiful this sign meant to her, I'm sure she went home and told her parents or room mates that for once in her life. Another employee, a stranger showed that I loved her, she was my friend.
I love this! Something similar happened to me. I used to work at Navy Pier in Chicago operating the rides. One day, there was a deaf girl getting on rides with her friends, or maybe family, who are hearing people. I signed to her, “Have a nice day!” and she was overjoyed. Her mom later came back and praised me with tears in her eyes and told me how thankful she was for the great service I gave her daughter. Many people ignore her because she’s deaf, but not only did I acknowledge her, but signed to her too! Simple gestures like this can make someone’s day in ways we don’t even imagine 💜
Real Fred rogers would’ve been very proud of Tom for playing that role.
Even the cops are singing. Man, Mr. Rogers was 1 in a million.
Even in my forties I still put on an episode of Mr Rogers’ show just to feel better about the world. It works every time. I honestly recommend it - he somehow makes the whole world a better place. The guy was pure love.
Imagine the one person that disrespected Mr. Rogers and the one thousand people would come to defend his honor. It would be unreal.
"there is no normal life there is free from pain."
Mr. Rogers.
No matter how many times you hear that song, doesn't matter if you're old or young........it leaves a special part in your life or childhood.
I loved his show. I always wanted to ride trolley! Even in my 40’s, I’ll catch an episode on CZcams and learn all over again.
This is based on what happen to Tom Junod when he's following around Mr. Rogers for his piece. They don't find Taxi and decided to get into subway and in the subway they met bunch of school kids. They don't bother Mr. Rogers but decided to start to sing the opening of his show
Apparently this actually happened, according to the article from Esquire that this movie is based on.
That makes sense why that scene was there
I grew up in Latrobe!
Mr Rogers was incredible!
Mr Mcfeely and him funded the building of the public swimming pool, an local park!
I'm 64 now...I still have pictures outside my grandma house of us, on Welded St.
Well, up until I was 13...lol...
My sister showed the picture at school...lol...
Man, we didn't deserve him and some of us (me included) didn't really understand what he meant to all of us until he passed 😔
If my heart could do so, it would have grown three sizes from this scene.
“Death, divorce, war. It gets dark” Yeah, well, unfortunately so does the world. Hiding the truths of life doesn’t do children any good. I remember the first time I had to talk to my son about death when our dog died. I took the Mr. Rogers approach on the subject. It’s very important for children to learn.
Thanks for sharing and sorry about the death of your dog 🐶
This made me cry! Love how you can see all the various generations who know the theme song.
I'm Canadian and I loved this show way more then Mr. Dress-up
Whats even more beautiful is that this wasnt made up. This (well at least the people singing) actually happened because he truly was that loved
Why in the world did I cry? Lol
Same reason I did man, woth how overexposed negativety is in the world nowadays sometimes we forget how great people and life in general can be and Mr rogers is the best example of that
@@theramplocal well said, brother. Well said.
I did too
Every time I ride the New York subway this scene always comes to mind.
I rmr seeing this in movie theatre and everyone started to singing along in this scene
My wife and I were inspired to sing along in the movie theater.
A saint if there ever was one
This song still brings a tear to my eyes
The kids singing the Mr. Rodgers theme song was sentimental and beautiful, that I laughed with joy. It's nice to hear that song, especially for those who used to watch the show when they were young, like me.
It's crazy I cried a lil when I saw that second... Mr Rogers neighbor hood was the best thing that happened to me when I was kid.
This guy Mr Rodgers is just the absolute best. I can
Remember singing this song along with everyone everyday for years. Such a great guy. I just noticed how amazing lyods acting was there, you could see how uncomfortable he was. Not in a bad way but more of not sure how to process this kind of pure love.
This is a pivotal scene in this movie, whereupon the writer following Mr. Rogers starts to think "who the hell IS this guy?" and realizes there is more to him than meets the eye. Watch closely, the writer is the only one who does not join in to sing the song, just looks around with a deer in headlights "WTF" look.
He was very confused and new to the whole Mr Roger’s hype in that scene
@@TheFunnyGuy9000 The ironic thing in this scene is the subway riders were not mocking him, but rather complimenting him by singing his theme song. So touching.
And look at the singers - black girls, white street toughs, young boys, business men and women.
@@hellogoodbye4061 nice
Can’t beat them old bright liners
Even the guy next to Mr. Rogers is singing. Imagine your riding the subway and Mr. Rogers sits next to you. Tom Hanks nailed this role
this tears me up
Just let me how I can recommend this a thousand times. Or is a million not enough?
talk about self validation in a subway....
If Mr Rodger’s was on the subway with me I would totally be singing this to him
I really wish Mr. Rogers was still alive 😢 our legends always die as we get older though lifes unfair
He helped me through my whole life.
Me too
he would've loved this movie
Tom Hanks is the perfect actor to play Fred Rogers.
Apparently they are distant cousins as well
Apparently this actually happened in real life but instead of kids singing it was a group of adults who grew up watching his show
Who else was raised by Mr Rogers ?
me
90s kid here. I consider myself lucky that I got to watch his program while he was still around.
I actually wasn't around when he was om TV but I've definitely saw the documentary about him and this
I hope this really happened and he got a chance to see how much people really loved and appreciated him. I know I did.
Love this scene - had to come here after watching the Tyre Nichols’ murder by Memphis police officers.😢
Everyone singing about neighbors on their way to shit on their actual neighbor's lawn.
🥹🥹🥹 When the commuters started serenading Mr. Rogers.
Powerful impact beautiful 😍

Arthur meets mister rogers
If he rode in a New York subway, it would be the same thing.
1:36 it would have been epic if they all ended it with; hello neighbor...
Woody playing Mr. Rogers
The person who disliked this needs a special treatment from thanos.
Is this 2018 Reddit moment?
The people who disliked this need more Mr Rogers
@@NotDuncan yup they need a better neighbor

He’s not French
Cool 🆒

I think you are extremely wrong there like seriously wrong Mr. Rogers was a man who had the astounding ability to relate to pretty much everyone. And being an old white man doesn't preclude the connection thing either
I have to admit it may be a great movie. But I bet this movie didn't make any money at the box office. Besides alot of these movies that are based on a true story will be nothing but a box office Disaster/Disappointment. All the film industries cares about is superhero movies.😒
Never checked the stats! Definitely not a blockbuster but I think it did ok. When I went, fairly well into it's run, it was well attended. Of course, that's anecdotal.
Great singing by the children 👧 on the subway 🚇 train 🚊 😊
0:37 Do it. Hey, Mister Rogers! 0:44 The passengers begin to sing A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood on Subway. 🚇🎶 1:39 Oh, that was wonderful. 1:43 Ha! I've never seen Lower Manhattan in New York City looking like this, lol! 😆 🏙🗽
