  • A cruise missile is an unmanned self-propelled guided vehicle that maintains flight through aerodynamic lift throughout its journey. Its primary mission is to deliver a payload, such as a high-explosive warhead, to a specific target with pinpoint accuracy. Cruise missiles can be launched from various platforms, including ground vehicles, aircraft, surface ships, and submarines, providing military forces with extensive deployment options.
Cruise missiles can be broadly classified into two categories: subsonic and supersonic cruise missiles. Subsonic cruise missiles, like the U.S. Tomahawk or the Russian Kalibr, travel at speeds below the speed of sound (Mach 1), while supersonic cruise missiles, such as the Russian P-800 Oniks or the Indian BrahMos, travel at speeds exceeding the speed of sound (Mach 1 and above).
Examples of modern cruise missiles include the U.S. Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM), which has been widely used in conflicts such as the Gulf War, the Iraq War, and the intervention in Libya.
The Russian Kh-101 and Kh-102 cruise missiles are also noteworthy, offering long-range standoff capabilities for their strategic bomber fleet. The BrahMos, a joint venture between India and Russia, is a supersonic cruise missile capable of being launched from land, sea, and air platforms, making it a versatile weapon system.

Fun fact: during Desert Storm, the lack of distinguishable terrain landmarks meant Tomahawks launched couldn't follow an optimal line to target. Rather had to take a detour thru terrain that could actually be followed...

Can Tomahawk Missiles be used to Fend Off Russian and Chinese Hypersonic Missiles ❓

@@Booz2020 I don't think so, they are offensive in nature... you would need a system like the Patriot

@Nacho71 AR Exactly right. You need an air defense system that can engage aerial targets at short, medium, and long-range to fend off offensive attacks. Say, using the S-300, 400, and 500 to defend against the Tomahawk missiles. Or using the Patriot system to defend against the Kinzhal 'Dagger' missiles

Couldn't they just use GPS for tomahawks instead of trying to find landmarks

    • @sandybennett_itsme

@@minigunnathaniel You are correct. At that time the Tomahawk missiles could be guided to their targets with GPS. However, since then, countermeasures to GPS signals have been developed. The need for better cruise missiles with multiple guidance systems arose. If one guidance system becomes redundant due to enemy countermeasures, another takes over. The US missile development motto should be: "There is more than one way to skin a cat." When the task is placing a missile on target.
