Why I Stopped Posting Landscape Photography Videos on YouTube

- In May 2022, I stopped posting landscape photography videos on CZcams. After a break of more than a year, I am now ready to reveal the reason why.
Filmed on location on Melmerby Low Scar in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, I take the opportunity to explain why I stopped creating landscape photography videos for CZcams and what has changed in the last year and a half.
Join me as I share the challenges I have faced in the last 18 months and the new ones I now must overcome as I attempt to photograph a new area.

I suspected something was up regarding a health issue. I'm still trying to get back to semi-consistent YT postings after my wife was diagonsed with breast cancer a year ago September. Surgery, recovery, radiation etc. It takes its toll on your psyche. Keep up the good fight, my friend. It's good to see you back!
So good to see you again, Chris! (I see you've added a bit of grey in the meantime.) In all things, going for a walk (with or without a camera) in an area of outstanding natural beauty is one the world's true restoratives. We're all rooting for you, mate!
Thanks Martin, yeah, the whole experience has definitely aged me. Hope to do a bit more walking in the coming months. Just as well as anything 'interesting' in the North Pennines seems to be such a long way away!

Oh man, sorry to hear about the cancer. Happy to hear the physical side has hopefully been dealt with, but having had it close to my life too, I know how terrible it can be. I was wondering where you'd been, but good to see you're back :)

Chris seeing your video notification pop up truly warmed my heart. The world of photography and CZcams felt a little dimmer in your absence, and I've missed your unique perspective and touch. However, understanding the health challenges you've been facing, it makes this return even more special and meaningful.
I genuinely hope you know that while your content has been a source of inspiration and joy for so many of us, your mental and physical well-being should always come first. Life has its seasons, and sometimes we need to step back, recuperate, and focus on ourselves. That doesn’t make your return any less significant or treasured. Whether you choose to create videos full-time again or not, what truly matters is that you are on a path to recovery and wellness.
Chris, your work has always been more than just about capturing moments - it’s about sharing stories, teaching, and igniting passion in the hearts of your community. Your videos have not just been lessons in photography for me, but also reminders of the beauty that surrounds us every day.
To see you back, even if just for this moment, is a testament to your resilience and spirit. I'm overjoyed to see you well and on the mend. Remember to take it one step at a time, and know that your community is here cheering you on, no matter the pace or direction.

Oh my! CZcams didn’t tell me you’d posted. So glad I spotted this. It’s an absolute delight to see a video from you again and I completely understand what you’re going through right now. It was your channel that got me back into photography. So you will always have my gratitude for that. Even though I no longer do a great deal of landscape photography and have moved on to taking pictures of people. Your channel will always have a place in my heart. Thank you again.

That's good to hear. Hope you are getting on with your new camera better than I am with mine. It can be a bit slow and dim-witted at times.
Glad to see you back Chris, I’m so sorry to hear what you have been through but hope you are on the other side of it now. I follow a lot of CZcams photographers and I haven’t found anyone remotely near your level of professionalism and engagement. A real ambassador to photography in my opinion.

Normally you'd be right about it being peaceful here. Unfortunately, at the moment, we are having our roof replaced and the constant banging is making my ears ring!

So sorry to hear what you've been going through in the last year with your health, I have a mate of over 30 years who is going through something similar to yourself. Look after yourself, it was great seeing you on here again but I totally understand if it doesn't become a regular thing.
Chris, it's great to see you back on youtube. I totally understand your reluctance to commit to social media, but please know that your videos bring a lot of pleasure to many photographers. Your down to earth manner and straightforward style are exactly what I look for in CZcams videos. Stay Well!
CZcams and Social Media is a cesspool and cancer is ugly too (I had my own head and neck cancer in 2018/2019). However, life is arguably about the search for beauty, and photography offers us photographers a path to find that beauty. So to youtube or not, doesn't matter in this search for beauty. BUT, hopefully you still have photography itself in your own quest to find love/beauty. Thank you Plato for this insight. Take care Chris.
I'm sorry you've had such a difficult time recently Chris, and good on you choosing to focus on your recovery. CZcams is not going anywhere and neither are we! It's just so good to see you mate! Wish you and your loved ones all the best!

Thanks Martin - yeah, it is a lovely area. It offers different challenges to the Lake District. I also have the Eden Valley to explore which I am looking forward to. And part of the Dales is still in easy reach, so I really am spoiled for choice!
Ahhh Chris, fantastic to see you back and hoping there’s plenty more videos to come 👍. Don’t let the social media cretins get you down…..your videos are appreciated by many and have been informative and helpful to me personally since I took up photography during ‘lockdown’. All the best 👍
Great to see you back. Having had a visit from the dreaded C twice now I know exactly what you are dealing with. It can be beaten and life can return to normal again. Keep going and hope to see more of you in the future 👍

So good to see you back Chris, your presence on CZcams has undoubtably been missed, it's a natural platform for you. I can only imagine the emotional stress, but nature is the best healer, and luckily you're in the thick of it where you are, so here's wishing you a speedy recovery.
Glad to see you back again even if you are unsure whether you will continue with the CZcams channel. You and I have had somewhat parallel years; in late 2021, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and as arrangements were getting underway for my surgery, the results of a covid-delayed colonoscopy in early 2022 showed a large mass of high-grade dysplasia (if I remember my terminology correctly) which meant I needed to have my ascending colon removed before my thyroid. The first op was on 29 April and, fortunately the mass had not turned malignant. Two months later (June 29) my near complete thyroidectomy was performed (papillary thyroidectomy with three of four lymph nodes removed). I had my radioactive iodine ablation on the day your queen died. Since then, I have been very fortunate; I wake up early and take my little pink pill, then walk the dog, ride my bike and wander around with my camera (a new one also!). I have been very fortunate with respect to my outcomes, and I hope you can get to the same place I am in good order. Best of luck & I look forward to more news from you.

To be honest Craig it is a long, slow road back to full health. But we are making steady progress.

I'm glad that you are back (or at least sort of)! Of all the numerous landscape photographers on CZcams, you are near or at the top of the list. I was disappointed when you stopped posting but I understand completely with all your health issues. I hope that your health issues are now behind you and that you will continue to have many more decades to be active in photography.
It's great to see a new Chris Sale video appear in my feed. Obviously your health is a priority and if you do decide to return to CZcams on a regular basis I know that your core followers will be quite happy. Your content always hits the mark with timely and useful information and presented in a most genuine and approachable manner. I look forward to seeing more of the North Pennines AONB. Cheers mate!

Hey Sander! I really enjoyed doing CZcams again. I decided that if I do come back, I will only do so if I am enjoying the process. That is the promise that I have made to myself.

Well having a new video from you Chris was a nice surprise. Totally understandable that you stopped posting to you tube, health and recovery should always come first. Your mental wellbeing is just as important as your physical wellbeing and while the vast majority of comments you will get on your videos will be very kind, considerate and caring, it’s the odd nasty one that will scratch at your emotions. Some people will say just ignore them, but we all know it’s never that easy especially if your feeling emotionally fragile. I for one would love to see more videos from you, but ultimately what I think isn’t important, nor anyone else that watches your videos, it’s your channel and your choice to continue or not. Take care.
You are so right Darren. There is a saying on CZcams... 99 good comments + 1 bad comment = 1 bad comment. It is only human nature I suppose. Usually I can handle it, but with everything I've been through, I am not as resilient as I once was.

Thanks Rob - I am enjoying exploring the Pennines and find the challenge invigorating. I am focusing my attention on an are called the Eden District. It covers the Eden Valley and extends into the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales as well as the North Pennines, so I have plenty to keep me busy.

Great to see you again, looking forward to some great photos on here . Cameras aren’t boring (but I get your point) owned Canon, Nikon,Fuji, Ricoh and Olympus, all wonderful pieces of kit that I think make wonderful images for us to enjoy.
Fair point I suppose. They are wonderful bits of kit. But don't you find all the chatter about technical specs, etc just a tad on the dull side? I mean, in my experience, none of it makes a blind bit of difference but that is all folk seem to talk about.
So good to see you post a video again, have genuinely missed you. My late hubby went through the big C and struggled mentally for some time after, so I completely understand your feelings. Please look after yourself, just get out with the lovely new camera and enjoy nature, as it in itself is healing.

What a pleasant surprise I had today when I found out you had returned to utube. You have been missed in my household.. I have some idea of what you have been through as I had cancer surgery a number of years ago. That's good to hear. All I wanted when I set up my channel was to help and inspire people. I think somewhere I got lost along the way. If I do start to produce regular videos for CZcams again, I want to get back to basics and ignore all the nonsense.

Sorry to hear that you have been unwell and very pleased that you have recovered, I have always enjoyed your "no bullsh:t" approach to photography and missed your videos when you stopped doing them, I deliver up and down the Eden valley and north Pennines area and have always thought that a good composition would be hard won in that area.
Sorry to hear the year you have had Chris. It's brave to go on camera and explain your challenges. And fully understand why you would not want to dive into social media again. Photography is create for our mental health, isn't it Ian. What could be better than spending time out doors doing something creative while getting a bit of exercise? I am surprised that they don't prescribe it on the NHS! :)
