The stereotypical Asian eye - the ones that are small, slanted and often with a monolid (single eyelid) - can only be seen in Asians...
...ok, not exactly true.
Just like how there are Asian people who have larger, non-squinty eyes; there also exist white people or black people who do have these squinty, Asiatic eyes. But just how common is it among non-Asian people, and why do they even have it?
In this video, I'll get into the different countries and ethnic groups from all over the world that you may not expect to have this characteristic. There will also be examples from some well-known celebrity faces!

Yup, there are no genes that make a person a part of their socially assigned “race”- like Asian, black, white. Race is all based on appearance and not some gene.
For instance, the gene for skin pigment of two random black people will be more genetically similar to that of a non- black person than to each other. So race is not a useful genetic classification.

My whole life I’ve been bullied for having “asian looking” eyes, even though I come from Eastern Europe and my eyes are blue. My dad has the same exact feature and we look alike. I never really cared about my ancestral background, and I was absolutely sure that I don’t have any Asian connections in my family, but after watching your video I asked my dad about our ancestry and where does this eye shape come from. Turns out his grandmother was Mongolian!

Part of my family is of Ukrainian decent and while we don’t have those features, I won’t be surprised if I have some hidden DNA from those Mongolian conquests a thousand years ago as well as earlier migrations of Paleolithic Homo sapiens from Siberia who crossed the Urals during the late Pleistocene and early Holocene epochs. (See 9:13) Really just shows how closely related we are as a species at the end of the day.

Obviously, since Africa is where humans originated, almost all of the features we see in humans can be found in them. Even Blue eyes and freckles I think can also be found in Africans. I would love to study African history and peoples more.

My grandma is Chinese so while I do look East Asian it’s “genetic” in other peoples eyes (on the Rez) and so I was “bullied” or teased for it (I never paid much attention to it) but it’s like, a whole bunch of people on my Rez who teased me about it look more “Asian” than I do and it’s funny. Like I look very much like both my grandmothers and one of them who is definitely not Asian (full blooded Cree)

"Asian eyes" or "the Epicanthal fold" were evolved for the Artic North. The feature most accentuated in native North Siberian, to Inuits of North America. It is an extra fat layer to protect human eyes against Artic frost, freezing winds and snow blindness. Asian hair with straight, thick individual strand, but sparingly distributed per inches, is also a result of human adaptation to the extreme cold climate, to easily wick sweat and moisture away from the skin to prevent frost bites.

Due to the amount of Ancient North Eurasian ancestry of Inuits and Siberians, they have lower percentage of single eyelid than East Asians, the reason, Ancient North Eurasians were 30% East Asian but 70% West Eurasian, darker skinned caucasoid people. If you look closely Inuits, Kets, Native Americans don’t have mono lid for the most part, 20% don’t have epicanthic folds.

People living up north have lighter hair and skin with narrower noses because of low sun light and colder air. Wrong... Europeans CANNOT have black skin, for example. Just like pure sub-saharan africans CANNOT have blue eyes unless they've got an extremely rare mutation or defect.

@@TheFlyfly Saying brown eyes are simply "most common" there is downplaying it. Brown is the ONLY eye color there. You don't see these types of monolithic traits in most European populations, other than in southern Europe.

Blue eyes originated with a black skinned population called western hunter gatherers and blonde hair originated with another dark skinned population called Ancient North Eurasians who are also partly related to Native Americans. Southern Europeans have a bit more Anatolian Hunter Gatherer in them which is also very common in Arabs, those populations got short because of farming, then again Europeans became pink because of farming as well, so in a sense no other population went through what Europeans went through but it doesn't mean Europeans didn't get these features from other populations.
@Ali Xander I'm talking about the two genes SLC24A5 and SLC45A with Herc2/OCA2 for predictability of light skin (de pigmentation) , Blonde hair and blue eyes which are absent from Europeans more than 7,000 years ago but developed by Europeans since then, that's what lead to the pink undertone of modern Europeans and southern Europeans have more olive undertones due to more Anatolian Neolithic ancestry.

In middle school, people used to ask me if I was mixed because I have almond shaped eyes and somewhat distinct epicanthic folds rather than hooded eyes. I went to a high school with a decently large Korean population and a lot of mixed kids so it was not all that unexpected. Unsurprisingly, I'm mostly genetically Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and Norwegian. My mom and grandad have the same trait and also used to get questions or comments about being mixed.
Both Irish and Norwegan have these eyes.
I have "east asain eyes" and I'm white, but it is due to my mom having ancestry of people who moved from east-asia to the US a very long time ago. It's only my mom and I who have those eyes in my family, for some reason my father and 2 brothers don't

I have epicanthic folds and always wondered why and never saw anyone in my (Caucasian) family with them.. always made me question why I had those folds especially when I would watch makeup tutorials. Funny you should say that; despite not being contemporarily pretty, I have often been told my natural "fox" eye, upswept cheekbones, long sharp jawline & extremely pale colouration with dark grey eyes make me very striking (my family used to laugh me for being weird-looking), & even allowed me to work quite comfortably as a model, for a few years.
Turns out photographers don't always want simply pretty; sometimes what stands out best in art is something that looks a bit more strange, in person.

My grandma had very strong east asian eyes. When I was an ignorant child, I used to tell her "wow grandma, you look chinese" (Please excuse the ignorance of a stupid 4 year old romanian child). It makes very much sense now. Her eyes were slanted and "almond" like. I too inherited that, and it makes a lot of sense considering the mongolians came to what today is known as romania.
Luri Ley Yes, I am from Romania too, from Constanta to be more precised. I have grown up with all the “You look Chinese!” stuff, from my friends, classmates and even my friends’ parents. My eyes are elongated, slanted, almond like, and I have a bit of an epichantic fold. Considering the fact that in Dobruja all these populations have settled, and there are a lot of asian ethnic groups in this area, it is a very plausible theory.

Sharing a common trait doesn't necessarily mean you have a common ancestor. There's also convergent evolution, which means two species (or groups) will develop the same feature because their environment is basically similar.

A number of haplogroups (a haplogroup is a group of genes in an organism that are inherited together from a single parent) - the Y-chromosome haplogroup N, and mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) haplogroups A, B, and D (they used to include C, but this haplogroup is now thought to have to possibly arisen in Central Asia), as well the genetic mutation allele G on EDAR370A - each originated among a single ancestor in Eastern Asia, and eventually spread to Europe and Africa, where they are found in small amounts of various populations there.
The immediate ancestor of the Y-chromosome haplogroup N is the Y-chromsome haplogroup NO, which originated in a single ancestor in Eastern Asia - more specifically, Southeast Asia or present-day Southern China - over 40,000 years ago. Actually my view of having asian eyes are pretty simple even though I was half asian I didn't have the fold but I did it with a facial exercise tip and now I have an Asian looking epicentic fold I did this to fit into my asian community and be more asian than I used to be

Thanks for the video, Im mixed Slovak and Serbian, both me and my brother look like we have a lot of east Asian in us. I read a while back that some Mongolian tribes set up camp and mixed into the population on current Slovakia so I assumed thats mostly where it came from, as a lot of Slovaks in my hometown had even much sharper East Asian looks to their whole face. I never really knew why as our fold isnt super pronounced, but the whole of low nose ridge, hooded almond eyes, fairly flat eyebrow ridge and wide cheek bones explained a lot about that impression together. If I put on eye liner it looks way more east asian.
Also in possible defence of Rene, I was told that because of my heavy hooded eyes I will probably need to think about eyelid surgery when I get older, because the hooded skin droops with age and can become kind of heavy on the eye.

And also not all Asian's have asian eyes. There are a lots of country in Asia that doesn't have asian eyes(in general). Such as Bangladesh, India, Iraq, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Lebanon and many more. Many people have this misconceptions that all Asian's have these eyes which is not true.

If I were to be asked if I embody the stereotypical Asian appearance, then I don't think I fit in well. The stereotypical Asian appearance is largely based off the predominant East Asian appearance anyway. In this age, we're better off not labelling people who may or may not look Asian. :-)

The "asian eyes" is actually spread from Haplogroup NO. Haplogroup N were separated from Haplogroup O which is dominant in East and Southeast Asia. Haplogroup N then went to North Asia. Haplogroup N were said to be a special trait to Uralic- or Finno-Ugric speaking population especially as high frequency or primary paternal haplogroup. I'm of N.W. European/Ireland/Scandinavian history, and have this, as did my grandpa. I was asked long ago, "Boy, when are your eyes going to round out?" Due to drooping lids, I had the painful surgery, as well as a brow lift. Guess those eyes protected from snow and cold?

Like the first reply said, take it with a grain of salt. These tests require improvement. One major companies lacked data from East Asia data and I’m sure they need more data from Africa, because it’s so ethnically diverse.
What happened was the percentages of mine and other East Asians ethnicity results changed when they updated their algorithms. So this shows there is even more room for improvement/ it’s not an exact science to begin with.

That's because so many latinos are fully or partially Native Americans and native americans can tend to have 'asian' eyes because they migrated from east asia thousands of years ago because Alaska and eastern Russia were connected via a landbridge due to the ice age.
Well, as a Latino, I think maybe the majority countrys of Latin America have this Asian Eyes because the Native Indigenous ancestry, especially in the north/northwest of South America, but when you walk down, they tend to be more "European/Western Eyes", like in Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, most of that is 'cause the mass immigration in late 1800's and 1900's of European people escaping from the wars, but especially in Brazil, we tend to se a mix of people, in North we have the most Asian eyes because the indigenous, then second in the West side, because the approximation with Bolivia and Paraguay, and some indigenous tribes live there too, and then in Northeast, Southeast and South of Brazil we have the most crowded areas, and the most "European eyes", but in the middle of the Southeast, in the most crowed state of Brazil (São Paulo), and in the most crowed city, we have São Paulo City and the largest neighborhood of Japanese ancestors in the country, so a lot of Brazilian also has Asian eyes because of that. In fact Brazil have the most number of Japanese ancestors in the world, behind only obviously of Japan, quite funny actually.

I have hooded eyes with an epicanthic fold and honestly I've always hated them. Not so much the fold but they fact that they are hooded. I constantly think a getting plastic surgery. But maybe I won't. For some strange reason this video made me feel a little better about my eyes.

I have "Asian-looking" eyes and I'm white. My eyes have a more cut crease though. I had 2 Chinese friends in high school who asked if I had Asian heritage (I don't). I remember when I first started learning how to use makeup when I was younger, the tutorials for "white people" weren't flattering on my eyes and made them look even smaller, but I learned about Ulzzang techniques (a Korean makeup style) and other Asian makeup styles and they were much more flattering on me. I have mostly Irish and North Western European ancestry. It's cool to finally learn about where they have come from. I used to not like my eye shape, but now I love them and think they're my best feature!

I have pretty noticeable epicanthic folds and somewhat hooded eyes. I'm caucasian and don't know much about my ancestry other than that there's German influence on my father's side. Watching this helped me feel less weird about my eye shape. Thanks for the information!
As a child growing up in Zimbabwe, we were taught (and I phrase it this way because we were often taught lies and I don't know if this is one of them) that Chinese pottery and other artifacts had been found in the Zimbabwe ruins, indicating they were trading with Asia in the 11th century and earlier.
In the 14th century the Emperor of China sent out a vast fleet of oceanic junks headed west for exploration. There are many Chinese artifacts including Chinese coins found on the east African coast. The fleet got as far as South Africa before it turned back. One wonders if it was because of the adverse sea conditions of the Roaring 40s which caused them to think there was no point in going further. The expedition definitely predated Portuguese exploration by a century and a half.

Latin America is “Latin” because it was colonised by countries speaking a Latin language (e.g. Spain, Portugal). Latino/Latinas are usually heavily mixed with many ethnicities but typically or mainly a mix of a Native American ethnicity with that of Western European.

My entire childhood and even my own extended family have wondered why I have Asian-like eyes, but I always stood that even though I’m mix I have no family that has been born in Asia. Turns I have a lot Finnish blood in me and this video confirmed my thoughts on this. I say this to anyone out there. @@jadrobe3492 Genetically the double eyelids (the pure european eyes) seem to be a mutation of "asian eyes". Since even Japanese people can have the double lids without them being mixed. And we all know how Japan is very homogeneous genetically.
I've got those almond shaped eyes as well. But I'm mostly German-Swiss, little Irish/UK, little Eastern Europe (which is my theory where my almond shaped eyes came from)

My dad's side is Polish, but his father's mother looked part Asian due to her eyes. My aunt and dad sometimes do as well, especially when they're tired. My cousin did a DNA test and it confirmed a small amount of Mongolian, likely due to the raids in what is now Poland back during the Middle Ages.
My daughter was born with eyes like this and I couldn't understand it. As it turns out, my husband's grandmother was Polish and had eyes like this. It's fascinating.
