Hi Dean. First, thank you for creating and publishing this series of videos. As a hiker, I really enjoy good hiking videos on youtube. I found yours and over a period of several nights, watched all 3 of the Hadrian's Wall hike videos. They were really fun to watch. The HD format and your great, interesting, and fun commentary made them all something to look forward to each evening - thank you for that. A few other notes that made this so interesting: 1. I've always enjoyed Roman military history, and seeing the wall brought that all to life. 2 - I lived in England from May, 1963 to Jan. 1966 (military dependent - US Air Force). We lived near Huntingdon, and were stationed at RAF Alconbury (leased by the US Air Force). As a young man, I was interested in walking, and recall seeing the signs for "public footpaths". However, no one wanted to walk them besides me, so I missed on that opportunity. So, viewing your videos gave me an opportunity to see the beauty of your countryside. 3 - For most of my adult life, my hobby has been hiking, and photographing the hikes (now in digital photos and videos). I live in northern Georgia, not far from the southern end of the Appalachian Trail (AT). While I enjoy the forests and high mountains of the Appalachians, I also enjoy hiking in the open, especially when one can see views of the surrounding area. Your video, especially the second one where you had so many interesting and beautiful views, really appealed to me. One other note (sorry for the long commentary), I was impressed that you and your companion hiked 32 miles in one day! My best in the mountains is 26, and I was 20 years younger when I did it! Thanks again Dean, look forward to further communication. - Ken
We had planned to do this walk west to east this week. But the pandemic has disrupted travel plans. We can’t get there from Australia. We can’t thank you enough for having created this series. Hope Ric’s ankles have healed!!
Hi Jenny, thanks for watching. Hope you can get over and do this route soon, I was hoping to do the Jatbula Trail this year too but that's not going to happen either sadly. Fingers crossed this is all behind us soon and we can get trekking again :-) All the best. Dean
Planning a trip to Scotland and England and a stop in Carlisle and a trip to the Wall is planned. On my Bucket List. Excited about seeing it.
Thanks for watching Martin, I hope you have a great time when you visit the wall
Excellent video really enjoyed I did this walk last year myself and this brought back lots of good memory's. Can't wait for your next one.
Looks like a cracking walk mate .
Thanks for sharing , on to part 2 !
Mate! Im well impressed! Hadrians wall is a walk ive always wanted to do! I cant wait to watch the rest of the mini series :) spot on mate!
thanks for watching Ant, it's an amazing trek and i'd highly recommend giving it a go.
Excellent to relive the path like this. We walked the path just a couple of months after you did. Not at all the way you did, we booked b&b's and had our luggage transportes as well. Bit of a lazy option by the looks of this video, but I was 17 weeks pregnant at the time, so I had a bit of an excuse. 😄 Thanks for posting this!
+S. K.H. Thanks for watching, it's a really great trek and we really enjoyed it. We'll let you off then if you were 17 weeks pregnant 😀 I think if I did it again I'd go with my girlfriend and use B&Bs perhaps. All the best
Worth the wait Dean, looking forward to part 2 & 3.
i've just finished the 2nd instalment and it is now uploading, should be online tomorrow :-) thanks for watching
Hi Dean, enjoyed watching one of your older videos. While your newer ones are a bit more sophisticated, your "Welcome Back" is still the same and I love it. Sorry, but I couldn't help but laugh when you stumbled and almost dropped the camera. Glad you are so agile.
Hi Dean. I watched your 3-part series again recently, and enjoyed them as always!
I like the way you provide commentary, makes me feel like I'm there.
God Bless...
Thanks for watching Ken. The Wall path is a fantastic walk, we really enjoyed it and I'd love to go back and do it again. All the best, Dean.
Great vid, can't wait for part 2, 👍 .
Fantastic video. Live in Newcastle and visited the wall lots of times - now I want to walk it too! very informative. Cheers, Simon
thanks Simon, that was the first time i'd ever visited your city. really enjoyed the walk, great views from start to finish
As a proud heathen Scot i enjoyed your part 1......now i'm off to toss my caber and then hunt for haggis.
Sorry about that reference Eddie, I'd kept hearing about the disregard the Romans had for the English and Scots during my research, the heathen word was theirs not mine :-) I'm a fan of all that is Scottish including Haggis
I walked that a few years ago, west to east was the best way to do it. Your video brought back lots of happy memories. It was my first solo LDP. I was lucky as I had one five minute rainfall on the whole walk. I took over 800 photos, every signpost and great view. Still need to upload the whole lot on flickr. I went on to do the 147 mile Viking Way after that. Didn't enjoy that one at all. Then decided a 100km from London to Brighton was a good idea, as you do! Not sure which LDP, to do next.
Hi mate, I really enjoyed the Hadrian's Wall trek. I'm still considering a few options for a 4 dayer along an LDP but will have to wait for 2016 to do a longer trip (used all my holiday allowance for 2015). Any thoughts on what you might do next?
Really enjoyed watching this and the companion videos Dean. I did the LDP back in 2011 in the opposite direction, and your video brought back some nice memories, thanks once again
Neil Holmes It really is a great walk, I enjoyed it from start to finish. It seems like a long time ago already :-) thanks for watching
Dean We need You back :)
Thanks for watching Mateùsz, I really do need to get back out with the camera again soon. 2020 was a tough year, life changing in many ways. Fingers crossed 2021 will be more settled. All the best. Dean
I've waited a while to find the time to start watching theses series of videos. Waiting watch via the Chromecast on my TV. Looking brilliant.
Thanks for watching Paul, This trip seems like a long time ago already. I need another trip or video project ASAP :-)
@@DeanRead mybe you cood see some ruins in sant arbins i mean thats the capital of the roman british enpier
Very Cool Clip. Thanks for the nice walk trow that stunning landscape :-)
Great as always Dean and well worth the wait! The remains of the buildings are awesome...I just imagine that floor space being taken up by soldiers, sheltering from a winter storm! :-)
i've just finished editing part 2 so that will be online at around lunch time tomorrow. day 3 was the best day for views and scenery, part 2 is dedicated to day 3 and it's 30 mins long. thanks for watching mate, hopefully we'll get out for a wild camp soon and I can keep the new vids coming for everyone :-)
Hey Dean. I start my Hadrians Wall walk next Monday 20th July. Can't wait. I've been using your videos as a major part of my planning. Thanks for sharing.
Cool project! Very pleasant to watch.
supersonic thanks for watching, it was a thoroughly enjoyable walk and i'm so glad I made a video so I can look back in years to come.
Great video, nice reminders of mine and dads trip :) The weather was with us just about all the way.
Great video! I would love to visit the wall!
Fantastic adventure Dean
it was a great trip, day 3 was my favourite day that is featured in part 2 which is uploading now :-)
As another heathen Scot I also really enjoyed this 1st part of your video. I'm sure the romans called us all sorts of things back then. lol This looks a cracking walk Dean, for some reason I expected there to be a lot more walking up and down hills. On to part two now. Atb Glenn
I'm doing it in August, looks a terrific walk!
+Johnny Graves Hope you have a great trip, it's a really enjoyable walk. Thanks for watching
Going to be walking this for charity next October so great glimpse into what well be covering.
It's a really great route, we walked some really big days so would love to go back and do it again in smaller chunks with time to go and see everything along the way :-)
Top video trilogy Dean, me and my girlfriend are doing the coast to coast on the 20th this month and can't wait. Your video has given us a major idea what we are getting our selves in to ha. Thanks for the tips and good campsites ⛺️👍🏻
+Helmet hair 82 thanks for watching and I hope you have a great time when you walk it.
Dean Read thanks Dean, yes I'm really looking forward to it. Il keep you posted and let you know if we defeat the challenge or the challenge defeats us ha. 👍🏻
The farm at Banks Turret was owned by my Wife’s family just a couple of generations ago, her Grandfather, who was also born there. I now live just west of Banks/Lanercost at Brampton but I originally come from the town of Wallsend at the eastern end of your journey. I actually lived on the wall as a child as the route came through our back yard and out of the front then down to the river.
You have just Inspired me thank you!!
thank you for commenting, you fancy walking it yourself? it's an excellent route :-)
This time last year my friend Richard Hubbuck & I were walking the #HadriansWall path, here is part 1 of 3
Greetings from Basque Country! nice video! what time of the year do you recommend walking it?
good luck ill wach part 2 and 3
Nice one Dean, very interesting, good commentary mate. I had it in my head that there was a wall from start to finish! Must have taken a while to build? Tim :D
The main bit of the wall is featured in part 2 which is finished and currently uploading, should be online tomorrow lunch time :) There is no signs of the wall really to the west of Carlisle, it's only when you get to Bleatarn where we camped that you begin to see anything.
Great video mate, I'd love to do this walk one day. Where did you camp? Did you use campsites or just set in a responsible area off the paths. Thanks in advance 👍🏻
thanks mate for replying,I will give you vid a watch on kit
Nice video dean stunning scenery if get chance walk Ridgeway ivanhoe beacon water source not good along it but great walk hadrians wall stunning view from 49. Enjoyable
+Andy Manser Thanks for watching Andy. I've seen videos by Sandy aka Wiltshire Man of the Ridgeway, it looks like a great walk. I think he mentioned the scarcity of water too. ATB
Really enjoyed that! :-)
Cheers Alex, it was a great trip. Should have next instalment online very soon
Can you tell me the name of the song that plays on the intro.
We nipped to see part of the wall yesterday which was the Banks Turret part then the fort at Birdoswald and found an organic farm shop with raw unpasteurised cheese at the end of the road and a little way up X X X
just discovered your youtube channel after i was looking for lake district hiking videos. Your channels great you have some really interactive videos, I'm heading up there in a couple weeks camping on the south side of Ullswater. Recommend any trails close by ?
Head up to Dove Crag and have a look at the Priests Hole Cave, that is a cool spot to Bivvy which I also have a video from.. The video on my channel is called Fairfield Horseshoe (google won't allow my link) :-) have fun and thanks for commenting
I will head over to that video later and check it out thanks for the info and have fun on your next hike !
Hi Dean
Can I ask what photographic kit did you take?
What was the weight of your pack?
Great videos. I am doing the wall at the end of April.
+Marpleman's Adventures thanks for watching. I took my GoPro 3 silver with 3 spare batteries, I also took my canon 550d with 3 batteries. I'm not sure how heavy my bag was sadly as I don't really weigh them. I did have 4 days worth of food with me but it wasn't too bad. Water was scarce along the middle section sadly so we had to carry a lot, you can get it but you have to go off Trail. I think I carried 3-5 litres each day. Hope you have a great trek. ATB Dean
UK a beautiful place. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. There's so many places to descover and that includes southern Ireland tho I've never visited I would love to at some point in my life
Have you ever cycled the Hadrains wall route
Dean: Just started watching your great video. Where is that first car park with the little road located, are there others? Planning a trip in a few months traveling with an insistent 81 year old that wanta to go so I'm obliging. Car parks with easy access would be great. Thanks and Greetings from Texas, USA.
what gear did you take on the trip...we are looking into doing the trip next year
+Jason Livesey hi Jason, thanks for watching. All you really need is a rucksack, tent, roll matt, sleeping bag, cooking system, something to carry water, head torch, map and compass and you'll be good to go. Everything else is luxury :-) hope you have a good trip. If you look on my channel I did a video a few weeks ago about what kit I take with me
I thought Id give this a 2nd watch as I enjoyed it last time.
Thanks for watching again Roy, I really enjoyed the Wall trek. I've returned to walk the middle section a few times from Steel Rig. Also did a 10 mile stretch while on the Pennine Way last year
Brasso182 Hi mate, the track I used is one I made myself. It's been a work in progress over the last few years and I only got around to finishing it a few months ago... It hasn't got a name yet :-) I've just been calling it "Enigma Style Tune" haha
Hi Dean. Looking at doign this for charity - how far did you manage to travel per day and how long did it take?
Hi JB, thanks for watching. We did quite a lot of mileage each day and if I did it again I'd take longer so we could see more of the sights. It feels like such a long time ago that I can't remember the distances sadly, I'd suggest doing it as slowly as you can to enjoy it. The middle section is the best bit of wall and by far the most spectacular scenery wise.
That's the pain, fitting big walks around family and work. I have a North Yorkshire charity one, 26 pubs over 74 miles, with a walking buddy. Tough Mudder in Leeds in August. I fancy a coastal one but Derbyshire is 70 miles from coast :( Followed you on twitter too :)
Louise
26 pubs over 74 miles :-) that's some pub crawl haha. I'd like to do a coastal one this year at some point too, thankfully I work 4 days on and get 4 days off so should be able to fit something in if it's around the 100 mark.
Have you done this again since?
hi dean how long did it take you to do coast to coast
+Bryan Maudlin hi Bryan, it took us 4 days but if I did it again I'd slow it down a little and take in the sights along the way more. We did 3 full days and 2 half days either side so 4 in total.
Possibly 5-6 days depending how quickly you want to walk and how much you want to see.
I would like to use your video for education purposes, Could I?
+Filosofía Apuntes would the video be used in its original form? Not edited down?.. if it is used without editing then that's fine with me :-)
Google just said Hadrian's bbbreakfast area has been found abroad I think
That was me in the Lamborghini I was on my way to Glasgow
Very picturesque...short on info.
The Mile came from the Romans!
I'm desperate to walk this but I'm wondering how easy it is for women (places to bed down for the night etc), and do I have to go on an official trail or do lots of people do their own walks? Congrats on doing this by the way. Very inspiring.
+TraffordReds9 we stayed at some good campsites along the way and there are a few BnB options too. It's a really great walk and I'd definitely do it again myself. Hope you have a great trek if you go and do it. Thanks for watching
Hi Deano, is it me, or did your mates pack change half way through day2? He seemed to go from a huge green Berghaus Vulcan military style bergen to a much smaller red North Face day pack? Also, your other friend (the smaller chap) seems not to be with you anymore? Makes me wonder, if you guys were using a 'support crew' taking gear to the next stop point? Or did your mate just dump the Bergen and most of his original kit? Did the smaller chap throw himself off that bridge into the river perhaps? :-)
Yeah my mate ended up dumping his green bag and switching to a smaller one half way through day two. My other friend the smaller chap was just along with us to walk the first day then went back to Carlisle. Well spotted :-)
We ended up only camping the first night so dumped gear as we had accommodation/hostel for remainder of trip. The plan was to wild camp on night 2 but all will be revealed in the next instalment ;-) haha
Прикольно
can an american do this?
I have never seen such a beautiful nose in my life
Nice video!! I've recently completed the wall and made some videos if you'd like to check them out!! ;)
I’m an American born in Texas but I have a profound love for American and world history, and this walk is something I’ve always wanted to take part in. I’m hoping once I leave the military I can make my way over to England and give this a go! Thank you for posting!
