Street Fighter 1 might be painful to play, but I don't see it making headway on this list. It's hard to separate it from the wedge between our modern standards and understanding of fighting games, and simply being at least marginally the progenitor of those standards in the first place.
It was bad, but it was a novel bad for it's time.

You know what? If the system to unlock moves was restricted to JUST the single player mode and 2 players let you play with the full moveset off the bat, that would be a much, MUCH better system...
Unlocking moves in single player makes some sense, it gives new players a way to ease into the game and learn how a character works over time in a way almost no fighter actually does often (ESPECIALLY with fighters of the era this came out, which sometimes didn't even print the special moves in the manual!) Heck, they even demonstrate the moves to you and show the button inputs which is a hugely novel concept for the time! But it's the fact that it carries over to the VS mode that ruins it entirely, and it doesn't help that the AI has access to a full moveset from the start either...
Game would still stink even if they did it this way but it would have made the Move Unlocking System a novel little idea rather than a hinderance...

I remember seeing this game in, like, Electronic Gaming Monthly or something when I wasnt even 5. I specifically remember it because when they talked about it in the magazine, it was about how to do specials and what not. And I remember that wizard blue cloaked fighter had a move where he, like, covered the other fighter ( in the magazine they used the girl fighter ) in his cloak, showing his heart printed boxers at the same time, and covered them up. As a kid, I thought he was fuckign whoever he put in the damn thing! For years I could never find it, and thought I had fever dreamed it. And now, here it is.
