Y'all should do an episode where you share and walk us through your paper decks. Would be cool to see what brews you have!
Yooooo!
Even doing just the pet cards in each would be dope!
Any guesses how many decks these guys could put on a table at one time?
yeah, flex on us!
“The flex is catastrophic” it’s my new philosophy for foiling my decks
haha i love this.
Richard is 100% correct. Mismatch your lands have all the best arts.
10:12 Wow! Props to Richard's wife, that's amazing.
Every wife is amazing.
47:32 man, how did this happen? New capenna ones are my all time favorites.
They are mentally narrow to even understand abstraction. They dog people
Speaking of these, the new full arts that they previewed for Thunder Junction where the Mana symbol is in the landscape art look sick. I may replace the basics of a couple commander decks.
Yeah! Especially with the forest making the mana symbol out of negative space
just checked them out and damn.. they look really good. I especially like the Plains and Swamp.
Yeah those might be my new favorites of all time (theros are my previous ones).
i saw the forest first and i liked how well blended it was, a bit of a let down how on-your-face the rest are. still sweet basics
The Bloomburrow seasonal lands are going to be my new favorites.
Hey guys! Just met Seth and Crim at magic con Chicago, it was fantastic to see you guys. I got Crim to sign a forest, then Seth to sign the same forest just to add some extra salt haha
Having Crim sign a forest is actually the most Crim thing to do 😂 well played
@@andyspendlove1019 at least it was a bolas forest
Glad to see Richard is man of culture and appreciates all the good full arts lmao
Thanks Richard now I want a secret lair of National Park basics...like use scenery from actual national parks. Isle Royal for the island, Everglades for the swamp, Yosemite for the mountain, Theodore Roosevelt National Park for the plains, and the Redwoods for the forest
That would actually be sick and it would help promote our national parks
I love how the LOTR Plains literally says 'Mountains' on it. :D
I dig Phils more “technical” analyses. Cool episode. My choice of lands is always oldest possible, white border fourth are my go to bc of price
"in my appartment in france" sounds sooo Bourgeoisie
The golf course plains discussion was amazing. I loved when the editor showed himself peeling the plains!
This podcast inspired me to spend the last 4 hours combing through every Basic land printing in the game to make a full list of all the lands I like. Absolutely loved this episode.
25:00 - Richard "They don't depict the thing!"
So true, totally agree. Richard spitting here.
26:28 - Richard "It looks like a tree with a guy on it"
How could you say that, I will literally fight you.
"Where else can you find a helicopter in magic the gathering?"
*gestures towards the countless thopters*
And smuggler’s copter!!
I will always be a fan of the Eldraine wishing well islands. Outside of that I have several boxes full of inlimited and revised basics, if I am not using modern horizon full art snow basic, then I am using original art lands from ABUR.
I 1000% agree with Phil on the new full-art land frame. The uncentered mana symbol is viscerally unsettling for some reason.
@1:28:20 Isometric is the word for the angle/style here, where the viewing angle is equally set apart from all three axis, making everything look diagonal. Very common in retro video games before full 3D became more popular.
Looked to see if anybody else answered first. Also the art gives off impossible geometry vibes as well, which I think Phil was looking to name Escher about.
New capena full art lands are really beautiful, espacially the islands
Man, the art deco style is GORGROUS. C for them is a crime
I think the only lands that flop in New Capenna are the mountains… But I otherwise agree :))
The other mountain (the wasn’t shown in the video) is super cool in my opinion
I am a diehard fan of the SNC swamp with the staircases
@@Eternalhachiiiiii yeeeeessssss, its GORGEOUS
There were some basics missed here. SNC has TWO sets of basics, only one was shown. The mountain in the other set is my favourite MTG land art I think
yeah, same with Neon Dynasty...the other set had better artwork on every single land
Snc nonfull art basics are also amazing
Unhinged will always be my favorites.
What I've learned from this episode is that most MTG players hate fun art styles
This is peak scraping the barrel content and I’m here for it
Still don’t understand why they never made a stats episode for the last season of Commander clash
@@andyspendlove1019probably too much work and not enough viewers
@@alvinmercado6305 hard to imagine the stats episode that goes over everyone’s play patterns and habits would do worse than a basic land art tier list haha, especially with how many people were requesting the stats episode. But who knows
I enjoyed seeing all the full art lands 😅
I learned that Phil is the only person that has good taste in lands. I kind of wish seth was here for it cause it feels like he might also like the good lands
i love how the "Lost Caverns of ixalan" time slot autocorrected to "lost caverns of Italian"
41:29 Didn't see anyone else answer this on a quick scroll: They've been called the Ukiyo-e lands, for the art style they're done in. They all look amazing in foil!
How about ranking every phyrexian praetor? There are 16 of them.
I second this
I think it depends on the format, 60 card praetor is totally different
All C, boom done.
Yall I've been asking for this for the past like 6 podcasts! Finally!!
The year of the dragon mountains are "season 2 qualifier promos" so when MH3 launches you'll be able to compete for your 1. These will be probably some of the most expensive basics ever.
Richard: "wait, why can't you mix these with real basics?"
Phil: "I mean, come on, we are civilised people over here.."
33:13 - Phil always dropping the one-line bangers whenever he is on cam :D
The new capenna plains in foil is one of the most beautiful cards I have ever seen
The person who taught me magic's favorite set of all time is odyssey so I only use odyssey lands, but of the full arts in recent sets the kamigawa neon dynasty are easily my favorite and I do use them for my cube
I would only consider mismatching if it was part of a theme of the deck
Edit: Exact lands below
Plains 331
Island 335
Swamp 342
Mountain 346
Forest 347
The fact that we now have enough full art basics to have a 1.5hr podcast is something i would have never guessed a few years back. Awesome
Crimson Vow are my favorite full arts.
Fight me.
I use to do matching but even numbers of each variant, but then you'd have to put in sub-par lands, so now I'm on the Richard train, playing the best arts! Thank you for enlightening us!
I played at an LGS with a 60 year old guy who self admitted that he had a fetish for the oldest basics that have the first tap symbol on them (that weird T symbol), and pulled out a mono black commander deck with revised edition swamps. Cool guy honestly
the first three un-sets still have the best art imo.
Thank youuuu for making this video. Big land fan over here. This was great
Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty and Theros Beyond Death are my favorite full art lands, I would run them in all my paper decks if I had the cards to do so.
Yes Richard the pixel lands are peak, thank you!
First time watching/listening and I'm definitely subbing. Love listening and being able to go back and watch long form content like this. Would love an episode on ranking dual land cycles, best card promos vs original versions, or maybe ranking different sets on flavor/lore? Gonna go back through after this episode and watch more for sure
When I pick basics, I try to match the plane with my commander or a plane where my deck's theme features prominently (like Mirrodin Lands for my equipment deck). Then, I like to have 3 or 4 copies of each printing (whatever fits my land count) since that's usually how I stack my lands in play.
theres a specific forest from ikoria that is set a night time with various small purple crystals, thats a personal favorite for non full art basics
Interesting opinion on the unstable lands, Phil. I wasn't a huge fan of them for a long long time but once I put them into deck lists, fetching for them made me fall in love. So so easy to find and if you have 2 or 3 of them all together then it's even more 🥰🥰🥰 I can only imagine how dope they are in foil 😭
We needed crim here.
Oh man, I'd love a basic land version of this podcast with all 5 of you. Due to the sheer amount it may need to be at least two podcasts.
I really like the Unfinity planet full art foil basics which weren't shown but briefly mentioned. The Unfinity shock lands are sick too w/ the galaxy foiling.
Love the content guys!
Phil is spot on! And Tomer obviously has no taste :) ... and Richard the ugly Pixel Snow Proxy-like lands? C'mon!
This was great! You guys should do an Atog tier list next, there's 12 of them and they're all S-tier staples.
Richard: throws a game bc he didn't top deck his hour of devastation plains and his farewell wouldn't have been lore accurate
Yessss i remember suggesting this topic a long time ago. Glad to see its actually happening! Lol but i feel like we need the whole crew for this! But ill enjoy it nonetheless ;)
Usually my basics are either all the same or entirely different. Nothing in between. I don't mix border types though.
I've spend like 300 bucks on just the basics for a single mono colored commander deck before. Priorities!
Wow, I love those Standard Showdown basics. Might have to snag a bunch of these for various decks.
Also unless I have a theme, I do the Richard method and mix & match my basics.
@5:30 I agree with Richard, there are so many cool different basics, I can't just pick one type to use unless the theme is really good, Like I have all the phyrexian full art foil basics in my phyrexian deck.
1:19:04 "lost caverns of Italian" lol
Oh, I listen to these at work. This one will be interesting. Don't have the time to keep my eyes on the screen. Hopefully you are good at describing them!
I have a binder full of basics with arts that I love. I have a handful of the kamigawa mountains that tomer brought up.
What a coincidence. I literally put out a notice to my playgroup that I'm collecting basic mountains from each set very recently and will accept donations or just buy them .
Freaking loved the black and white innistrad lands. I have a spirit deck that’s all those lands. They are gorgeous
The foil Ixalan island & forest were my start in basic land love. One in my phone case right now
I wish you guys talked about the new lands coming out with the symbols disguised in the backround. I think they're going to be new favorites for a lot of people.
25:45 The SL came with 2 swamps. One was the extra card and slightly different.
Unstable lands are gorgeous in person and in foil. My mono white deck has mostly Unstable Plains, with a Godzilla one and a Galaxy Foil Planet one.
I’m offended by the cats and dogs ratings, not actually but I have that deck and they make me smile every time, forest for cats mountains for dogs and playing together on the plains ❤️
Richard and I dont usually share the same views on MTG, but he got my back on those Pixel lands. The only time I've ever bought basic land Secret Lairs was both sets.
The mana is coming from the stars in the constellation I guess for the Theros lands, kinda fits
Agreed with Phil 9/10 times, what a lad.
Thanks for the video!
Fully agree with Richard on the original Ixalan basics. SERIOUSLY underrated. Same with Ikoria and Throne of Eldraine for me as well.
I love the Phyrexian Scripture Lands. Those and some of the Kamigawa Neon dynasty lands are the full arts that I rock.
I always use the lands that fit the plane of the commander (mostly where the commander is from). Foil Full Art over other options. I split different printings of Full Arts from the same set evenly. Other than that I use the most beautiful artwork of one set pr the ones that fit better for the theme of the deck or for the commander. For competitive formats i use the theros beyond death full arts because they are very easy to read for the other player.
Mismatching for me is only ever gonna be a thing in mono colored decks. If every basic is the same anyway, I will most definitely get all the sweet artworks in there. But if I'm in multicolor & have different kinda of bascis, they are all the same. Usually some full art, but I do have a few sets of old bordered lands that match, so they are in some decks as well.
I really hope you guys end up doing a full deep dive into favorite hipster lands.
There are some blessed swamps from shadowmore sets Richard, those are my favourite!
I love all the different basics and full art basics available. I collect them all, or at least as much as I can afford (cough, judge promos, cough) and I try to get some of the old border foils when I can. There are also a number of nice regular lands for LOTR that look great as well. I also love the panorama lands from Scars of Mirrodin, Worldwake, and (I think) Champions of Kamigawa. There are some other mini-panoramas in Lorwyn and Shadowmoor that I'd love to get, but some of the foils are pretty pricey.
But yea, sometimes they fall short with the full arts, and sometimes the regular lands have gems. It kind of sucks that we get like, 2 new full art lands with each new set, but I still love the new art and variety. And sometimes you get some that are really special and have value. I think the whole idea for them is to create a variety of lands that can help people with all sorts of different tastes bling out their decks.
It is probably because I'm a mono green player, but I love the LOTR forests, playing with fangorn and mirkwood forest make me soo happy.
I just ordered 6 oil slick plains to start foiling out the basics in my judge promo elesh norn commander deck. Its only got around 20-25 basics though, it also runs emeria, field of the dead, etc. It has means to turn on field relatively easily while keeping a decent number of basic plains. I'm looking forward to it being decked out. The dark background doesn't bother me in the slightest. I have an Ajani that is far harder to read, plus it's a basic land, you don't need to be able to read it to begin with lol.
I wish Crim did a call in for the Amonkhet/Hour of Devastation lands to defend them because those are S tier.
I just ordered the innstrad b&w lands for the monowhite gisela the broken blade.
I dont usually buy lands but they were really affordable. I think those land are really nice in a monocolor deck.
A bonus ranking for the full text lands was expected.
For full art, I love the Unstable lands. For reg. size, I play whatever is on theme. In my 5-color deck, I run the Bob Ross lands because WotC was nice enough to mess up my order and sent me two boxes instead of 1.
As New Capenna's biggest fan, I can't believe the ratings of the art directly after SNC....
Guys are literally brainless. Typicsl American, see s Gothic imitation, have orgasm
I'm new cspenna biggest fan btw
I think the Midnight Hunt lands actually look quite good. The Swamp is gorgeous with the light coming through the trees and the reflections on the water, I really like that one. The Plains and the Crimson Vow Plains are nice as well. It is absolutely beyond me how they can prefer the golf course plains to these 😄
Boys, boys, boys. The 'metal lands', both the SL and the Phyrexian ones, were done by the Mark Riddick. He is to metal what Junji Ito is to manga. He is to metal what Ron Spencer is to Mtg.
57:46 My S++ 😊😊😊 These are the ones I have. Love the artist they make purely amazing art
The disrespect for the Brothers Wars lands was unreal. In foil they are so insane
Richard and I basically like the same lands.
I'm with Richard and seth on this. Too many cool lands to play, gotta fit as many as you can in a deck.
Dominaria definitely my personal favorite. First basic land I went out of my way to buy foils for a mono black commander deck. Close contender is unfinity galaxy foil.
I have a dragon shield box for each of the basic land types. They are a large mismatch of lands from a multitude of sets. Full art, regular, even white border. Whenever I need lands for a deck I just grab however many I need, not paying attention to art or frame or style at all.
Also, in my opinion, the oil slick lands are amazing in person. They are definitely dark, but I love the texture. But I get the sense that there are many areas in which we do not align in terms of our tastes haha.
You guys should post the blank version of your tier list so people can make their own.
If you read the original Dracula novel, all of the arts depict scenes from the book VERY well. They don’t look like Plains or Swamps, but the attention to detail regarding the book is amazing.
44:50 I didn’t even realize the “HIWTYL” commander deck came with a bonus Mountain. It came with the Island but apparently the Mountain was missing in mine. That sucks😢
In my humble opinion the actual best basic cycle of all time is the Seb McKinnon Dominaria United basics. The forest, island, and plains are especially good!
Yep, if the Swamp would be available in old border (foil) I'd pay any amount necessary to use them in my Jadar deck 🥲
I usually match up my lands, my favorite is the Phyrexian from All Will Be One, but my mono white blink deck has all mismatched lands because it's a very crimmy deck where I mostly focus on blinking a bunch of etb draw and etb kill your thing and my Mistveil Plains means you mill out before me
"This really old Ixalan foil" makes me feel old
Tell me about it 😓
I started collecting during tempest...
The LCI lands are sweet! The plains is Machu Picchu! Yes the Swamp is too blue. Send me all the Plains and Forests (pray)
Plains being a incredibly high village on top of a mountain that before roads and trains took 3 days walking upwards to reach dazzles me
New Capenna art deco full arts are S Tier, with Plains #273 and Island #275 being S+ tier.
I'm with Phil, the basics from invasion, onslaught, mercadian masques. The retro foil with the falling star is supreme.
people have been complaining about lands not showing the thing they're meant to depict longer than lands were only showing the thing they're meant to be.
