DYNO TESTED: Ported Throttle Body For Mustang Worth It?

  • Ported throttle body is another one of those common modifications for Ford Mustang. And while it's super common, there's to be little consensus in terms of real gains. Some claim 5hp gains, others claim 20hp, and some say it's useless. So, we decided to do a controlled test and find out the right way!

    To some those numbers don't matter but those that have 2-3 here 10-15there in different parts then it all adds up n it matters...

    3-5 hp still helps

      I mean weight reduction or working out will be more beneficial lol

      3-5hp is within the dyno’s tolerance, so it means nothing

    When I was a teenager and had no money to upgrade my cars in edition just needing to tinker with something I would remove the throttle body shaft and cut off one side of the shaft horizontally. I would cut off the side that originally held the head of the screws. This side is not threaded. Then I would used countersink screws then cut off the end of the screw making it flush with the half shaft. I would even fill in the countersunk screw Philips slots or hex hole with epoxy that would stay in but I could burn or chip out if I needed to remove the screw.
    Preferably you only want to remove the part of the shaft that is exposed at half throttle. When a half throttle the throttle plate would be completely smooth with no shaft speed bump.

    interesting to see a ported intake where they dont change the actual diameter of the throttle plate. i got a stock body ported on my old car from 55mm to 60mm and bigger plate and it gave a 8hp increase on a 100 wheel hp car xD

    @Matthew330ba Před rokem +10

    Would be interested to see if a 85mm throttle made any difference, it could just be that the car doesn’t need any more cfm

    The only reason I'm considering having my throttle body ported is to smooth airflow in from my 4.6L 2V's ADTR ziptube and out to my Trick Flow 75mm upper plenum. The slight venturi effect of necking down to the throttle blade will increase flow speed, while porting out to the plenum will increase intake pressure. Hopefully, that'll improve throttle response, something the dyno can't measure, even more than adding the new ziptube and upper plenum did.
    Adding Trick Flow heads and aftermarket exhaust will add the power I want. I'll need a dyno then.

    I'm just throwing in my 2cents but I've been told by other enthusiasts to stick with an 87mm tb for gen 1 and get a 18 intake manifold w/ whatever cold air intake preffered for max power in my gen 1 5.0

      @Kyle_gallegher Před 7 měsíci

      also he is likely seeing baby gains cuz the butterfly valve and plate are untouched so its technically still stock. Was told to stick bbk by the same gents and after seeing this I think tht rings true

    Mkay, So IF those gains are consistent at running temp and the owner is willing to put the time in to do it themselves then 3 HP is 3 HP, It's better than three less hp...But is it worth the money? Probably not. it might be useful for those trying to keep it stock looking, probably more useful in totalitarian states like California.

    Interesting. I just did this to my ISF as well as porting the intake. I am hoping to get around 10-15hp increase with both. (ported intake on the ISF has shown 8-12 hp)
    The TB by itself not worth it but in combination with the inlet maybe. Will find out in a few weeks next dyno test.
    Thanks for the info. Great channel 💪👍

    The hump or convergent duct acts as a ventri. The engines stock throttle body is sized to deliver the engine requirement for CFM. The design uses physics to speed up the incoming airflow right before the throttle blade. This allows for crisp throttle response and moving the airflow at lower RPMs. Do not oversize a throttle body or it will make it a dog down low in the RPMs

  • @302hobronco

    Would the gains be greater as the engine optimizes its tune for the improved airflow?

  • @CL9k24a3

    Now you gotta do TB coolant bypass mod and dyno stet it. I have seen on some ls1 cars 6hp gain.

    • @ThrottleHavoc
      @ThrottleHavoc Před rokem +2

      That wouldn’t apply to these coyotes because they don’t run coolant through the throttle body

      If you tune it to take advantage of what you done.... You get more power...
      If you do lots of mods at once and then tune it.... You'll add up a lot.

      Is only worth it with supporting mods like a turbo. The turbo will pull more air in which you’ll NEED the ported throttle body 🤓

    You get those differences between runs any way's. The NA engine has max its power input. Now put that on a FI car and your talking gains.

      Got an 05 Astra h 1.6 z16xep engine. Aside from all the smog emissions deleted out, I just recently done my tb and bored out the intake manifold, I can tell a small difference to throttle response. Got little more kick. But should just do engine conversion really

      Combination ported TB and intake with a cam ridiculously wakes up the motor. I did a home built gutted and ported manifold. I gained 1k rpms of power band and 10-15 whp and power didn't fall off at 9k. Well. This was a p13"h22" manifold pro2 cams on a Japanese market F20b swap.

      It’s going to be basically the same results, the 11-17 throttle bodies get reused for some of the supercharger kits since they’re pretty efficient stock. 😊
