I very rarely have any nationalist sentimentality, and i'm fully aware that Australia is still very much a racist, colonial Nation, but seeing clips of Peter Norman and the subsequent vilifification he received, makes me proud of the Australian Spirit and his contribution towards highlighting racial inequality.
It's sad but as a white man I feel sort of guilty that Peter Norman is so celebrated just for doing the right thing, but then he did suffer big time for his stand.
i feel you and i 100% agree, white men should NOT be praised for just doing the right thing. and that moment in time really was for protesting racial inequalities in the US and will forever be an amazing part of history - however peter norman’s story should also be told because of where he came from as well. australia did and STILL has a very very racist background. especially towards their indigenous people. white australians in particular should all know peter norman’s name and how he, even as a person with the privilege from being a white man, was ostracized and blacklisted for standing up against racism. the system essentially turned on “one of their own” - aka white men - for simply doing what’s RIGHT. and if they think it’s horrible what happened to peter norman (which it is), they need to imagine how POC feel, and what they have gone through, through thousands and thousands years of racism. i’m glad that peter norman is being recognized especially in australia in the more recent years, because he really did start a conversation about australia’s own racism that is often hidden in the shadows by other things. RIP peter norman.
