"no I use Yahoo"
*deafening pause*
"oh wow, interesting"
Roy sounds like Yura from Elden Ring.
1:00:15 Damn Patrick clocked that guy right quick
How similar is Scottish Gaelic to Irish? (or Gaeilge, nobody here calls it Gaelic) Here's a comparison of the dialogue from 1:54:30:
Original (Scottish)
Roy: Tha e cur an dearg eagal orm a-muigh an sin.
Caz: Chan fhàg mi idir thu, a charaid.
Roy: Ch-cha chuirinn às do leth idir e, nam fàgadh tu, a charaid...
Caz: Tha mi a' ciallachadh, tha am biadh gu lèir agat a-staigh an seo, sa chiad dol-a-mach.
Caz: Èist...
Caz: Bruidhinn ris an Fhear a tha shuas, agus chì mi a dh'aithgghearr thu, ceart?
My translation (Irish)
Roy: Tá sé ag cur eagla an domhain orm amuigh ansin.
Caz: Ní fhágfaidh mé thú, a chara.
Roy: Ní chuirfeann locht ort d'fhágfá, a chara...
Caz: Tá mé ag ceapadh, tá an bia go léir agat istigh anseo, sa chéad dul-amach.
Caz: Éist...
Caz: Labhair leis an fhear atá suas staighre, agus cífidh mé go ghearr thú, ceart go leor?
So you can see it oscillates between so close I feel like I can understand Scottish Gaelic, to so different I'm completely lost haha.
I tried to translate the Irish fairly naturally, so instead of the Scottish "an dearg eagal" (lit. "the red fear", as in blood not communists) , I used the common Irish idiom "eagla an domhain", "the fear of the world", even though "dearg" means red in both languages.
Disclaimer: I speak a more west-coast, Connemara dialect of Irish - the northern, Ulster Irish has even more in common with Scottish Gaelic. I may have made some grammatical mistakes!
P.S. Please don't use the term "British Isles"; the Republic of Ireland is neither in Britain nor the UK and we hate our country being called British. Say Britain if you mean the island containing England/Scotland/Wales, and say the UK if you want to include Northern Ireland. The widespread use of that term is one reason why a huge swathe of Brexit voters were surprised to discover that they hadn't owned the Republic of Ireland for (at the time) almost 100 years. 😅
Game at @24:15
I can't believe I never knew oil rigs float on pontoons! This game rules, such a compelling setting and really great to hear real Scottish and Irish accents.
I see that Rob Bottins The Thing special effects, are alive and well in this game!
