    Honestly, so much charm of this game comes from low budget decisions. If your company have millions of dollars you can just toss money at the problems to be solved on the most obvious way. Budget restriction forces you to be creative because the simple obvious choice is not financially viable.

    Fun fact: outside of Sam Lake being the face of Max. The Russian, Vladimir Lem is played by the frontman of Poets of the fall. A person, who’s actually a friend of Sam Lake. The band poets of the fall was formed around Max Payne 2. Which they were asked to make a song Marko, Oli and the captain wrote the song, Late goodbye.
    The band still collaborates with Sam, both as Poets of the fall or alter ego Old gods of Asgard. Which are in max Payne, Alan Wake and Control.

I do remember how big this game was back in the day, still got a whole bunch of magazines from 2000 and 2001 with Max Payne promo posters "Do not cross" "A man with nothing to lose" - gotta say, got me hooked. Max Payne 2 is the one I've played the most by far (thanks to mods, mostly), but original is the one of the defining experiences of my childhood - along with Silent Hill 2, og Fallout 1&2, Neverwinter Nights and... Vice City

  • @AlphaYellow
    @AlphaYellow Před 2 lety +1

    I love this series a lot, a game that I play at least once every month or so. Remedy took many risks with this game, but they knew from the start they had a jewel in their hands, their past background in the demoscene culture definitely helped them in building the engine that powered it, with amazing dynamic lighting and particle effects for the time. Sam Lake is just a brilliant writer and his work on MP1 is one of his best along with the sequel. Just an interesting info, the original release schedule was summer of 1999, but they were forced to delay it at the last minute, cuz they thought the game's graphics didn't reflect what they were going for, and revamped the engine's lighting, textures and character modeling for a much more realistic aesthetic, and it proved to be the right choice in the end. The dark, gritty, realistic atmosphere of the New York streets will never age, neither the sarcasm and poetic quotes from Max, brilliantly voiced by James McCaffrey. Too bad McCaffrey never got the recognition he really deserved, even as actor.

    While i like Max Payne 2 and 3 is not bad, 1 simply is the best. It has such a charm and groove to it. It simply flows like butter while you play. The physic while limited to set animations, lines and breakabilities, where so finely tuned that it was in many ways better than plenty of ragdoll and loose 3D objects in other games. The graphics and effects are sooo clean, you get a feeling of a cinematic shot after each shootout, with everyone dropped in a way, with objects, holes and a little of destruction painting a perfect scene.
    It's great!
    And the storytelling is awesome. It gets to be funny, stupid, philosophical, mundane, cartoony and serious at the same time.

    You have to understand, at that time 3D gaming was at the early stage of innovation, that's why we had a lot of good ones that "shouldn't have worked". Nothing like that happens anymore. It was just something new at the time and experimental. A lot of game engines were being forged. PS2 had a lot of new games in it that were innovative as hel.

      I've been considering covering GTA games, they are a big task though. The hours needed to complete those videos without doing a disservice is daunting. I eventually want to cover all of Rockstar's titles, and GTA is obviously on there. So I'd say I'll definitely do them, but they are not on the immediate schedule at the moment
