The gray switch for turning on the brush motor got stuck in the down position and was not working I opened it up and used a ball pen spring to solve the problem I hope it works if I anyone has a better suggestion please mention it in the comments

Thanks for posting! Same problem but luckily nothing broken inside. Lubed up with silicone grease and added two ball point pen springs! Works beautifully now! My hero!

A-ha, thanks. I always thought the roller switch was lame and when our roller stopped I was baffled because there was no obstruction in the roller itself. But it had been some time since I had the brush stop and had forgotten about the reset switch on the roller housing. So having examined the switch mechanism the switch didn't seem to lift up. Took it all apart, no broken bit, fitted a biro pen spring and was impressed upon reassembly how that brush switch now has a new zest for life. Power on and still no brush spinning. So, take out the brush element (thank to Dyson's own video) remove minimal thread, clean it all and video reminds me to press the reset switch. And,. Voilà, we're back in business and I have a fabulous responsive brush switch now so, thanks :-)

This has saved me a great deal of headache as I thought my roller needed to be replaced or the switch was broken for the roller! I put it away in a closet until that could be done! In the meantime 6 months ago I bought a backup by Hoover which of course decided to break & it was not a cheap model & in mid lockdown for the Covid epidemic! Couldn’t exchange it with warranty so I had a choice to try seeing what could be done or buy another via curb side pickup! Unfortunately they don’t have curb side returns LOL! ! I decided to pull out the dyson & found your video! Imagine having to purchase another vacuum or waiting a month plus to exchange a vacuum when you have 3 fur babies? This fix ( as frightened as I was to try it) worked for mine & you saved me from truly enduring the coronavirus blues as well money! It worked & if I could do this anyone can! Thank you so very very much for the video!

THANKS! I cleaned my whole Dyson and could not figure out why my grey button was not functioning. Your video has demonstrated what I need to check and fix next. THANK YOU!

Thank you. Dyson support did not want to provide any information on this other than to schedule for a paid repair appointment.
Just pressing the beater switch down allowed easy closing of this cover.

Just learned that I need the part called "power switch cover" which should fix the problem. Actually its a design flaw that the grey brush motor switch is not equipped with a return spring like the red button is. That's why this problem has been there since day one.

They don’t come with springs but they definitely should have. The fix that worked for me was filing down a sharp edge on the button that kept getting stuck under the dark grey housing. It works effortlessly now. This fix of adding a spring also seems like a really good fix

Having investigated inside our DC24, the piece that's broken off the grey button moulding in yours is still attached, but it has obviously been worn thin via friction during repeated use. It is only a matter of time until it breaks off. This is what should press onto the concealed red switch below so it obviously impacts operation when it wears thin or breaks off and presumably yours works because the moulding is pushed further down to make contact with the red switch.
I believe that the reason that the grey button isn't sprung is that it relies on the concealed red switch being sprung. It rests on the red switch. When you press the first time, the red switch pushes down (on) and stays down. The grey button also stays down, indicating that the roller brush should be on. When you press the grey button again, it pushes and disengages the red switch which pops up so the grey button lifts up again.
The red button operates differently, with the spring to make it pop up again after it has pressed its concealed red switch to start or stop the main motor. At a guess the logic is that you can hear that the main motor is on - you don't need visual clues. Whereas maybe the roller brush is quieter so Dyson decided to give the visual clue via the grey button?
Or it could relate to that diagonal spring and the mysterious white lever to which it attaches. Presumably the purpose of that is so that if you press the red button a second time to switch off the main motor, it somehow switches off the roller brush too, if it was on.
Whatever, personally I doubt that adding the extra spring makes any real difference. The critical thing is that the underside of the grey button assembly can push down on its concealed red switch. Regardless of there being a "pop-up" spring, it will perform differently if a piece has broken off (yours) or worn to a different shape (mine). Maybe it's the grease that has been helping people rather than the spring?
If I can't buy a new grey button moulding then I will try to build mine back up to its original shape, or maybe glue something on top of the concealed red switch to improve contact. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to add an image to illustrate.

TIP: if you have lost the grey pushbutton’s shorter spring, as happened to me, a spring taken from a fat pushbutton Pen/Biro and cut to size will work for Dyson Ball or similar models with an AC Power Push Button assembly as shown in this video. Must be a fattish pushbutton pen. That shorter spring can have a slightly smaller outer diameter than standard, eg 4mm will work and cut it to approximately 10mm extended length and it will work ok. It worked for me. Cut, install and test before installing the complete AC Power Switch assembly onto the Vacuum Cleaner body. The springs need to be of similar wire thickness approximately to compress similarly/adequately.
The Red pushbutton spring is the longer 19mm one and it has an outer diameter of 4.7 or 4.8mm. I did not test to see if the Pen spring would have worked there but I think it might work too.
This way you can quick fix and not need to order just 1 spring.
I discovered that If you call Dyson UK as I did on 10 November, sadly, you can expect to be told that they are busy and average waiting time may be up to ½ hour. So I hung up. I did not try email as the website said to call. I could not find data to confirm exactly which spring pat number to order and I could not find spring technical specification info for the listed springs and the description did not confirm, eg with a diagram, precisely where that spring was used. Sadly many companies have similar poor / cost cutting after sales technical support. IMO Dyson do sell a very high quality, well designed, robust product, the component quality and repairability are very good.

Although the appliances of the past were designed to NOT enable home replacement simple, future legislation will help sustain older appliances via component replacement rather than whole unit scrappage . Dyson has some service-sector accessible ideas in most of their machines but not aimed wholly at the domestic user themselves.
