'Aranyak' (Of the forest) by Bibhutibhusan Bandapadhyay is a classic Bengali novel based on the author's amzn.to/3NF92h... long and arduous years in northern Bihar. Written as the journey of Satyacharan, the protagonist, a young graduate who is forced to take a job as an estate manager in the remote forest areas of Purnea district, this book not only gives startling insights to the natural beauty of the area or the unthinkable poverty ridden lives of the people there, it also touches many thought invoking ideas, like, deforestation, nationalism, modernisation, the contrast between the jungle and the city, the contrast between eastern and western lifestyle etc.
