LEAVING the busy city life behind and returning to nature has been a “magical” experience according to a couple who gave it all up to live in a custom house 40ft off the ground in rural Oregon. Dabney Tompkins, 61, and Alan Colley, 70, swapped high-paying jobs, expensive cars, and lively social lives in Dallas, Texas to live on 160 acres in a custom-built fire lookout tower. The couple initially moved from their large house in Dallas to a condo in Portland, and built the fire lookout property as a weekend getaway location in 2010. But in May 2014 the pair decided to try living in the house full-time and now say they couldn’t imagine going back

I love how it's located in a clear "fire break" area.. a lot of these are in deeply wooded areas I've noticed. I envy you both for living in such a remote, beautiful place and so nice that you have each other. A kingdom indeed. ❤

Yes, me too! I absolutely love this place but a toilet is a must for me. I can shower outside, cook on small stoves, be cold in the winter & live a minimal life, but I’d need a toilet I’m afraid, & I don’t fancy climbing 66 steps back & fourth if I was to get caught short ! lol.

First of all, I'm dying of envy. Your home is awesome. You could probably install a winch powered elevator to enable you to live there longer, it shouldn't require too much of an alteration. Second, the country air obviously agrees with you; you both look great and are happy. Finally, and I say this all couples, you can always tell you're married, one of you will deliberately say something to start an argument and the other will completely ignore it. Live well.

I'm currently working towards building one of these. Don't live out as far as these folks, but do live up near the end of a glacier valley. Get above the 40-50 foot trees and it would be a stunning view 360, mountains and a giant glacier.
It needs a lift/pulley/counter weight system.. practically speaking their going to need it in their older age .

Brismo People have built cheap elevators with bikes for a treehouse, it doesn't have to cost $30k.

oh wow! a firetower as a house! I've seen tiny houses, cars, abandoned subway stations, and many more turned into a house. But this is the first time I've seen a fire tower turned into one! Really different! My only gripe is the no toilet thing. And the funnel. :x
If I had a tiny house, I would dedicate half of it just for the bath stuff.

There are a few design changes needed, IMO, the elevator is at the bottom of the list. The "pull down" ladder for a permanent space is way up the list. Also there is no reason not to put in a bathroom and a drain system. Just dumping stuff into the space you live in below isn't cool. A pvc drain pipe for a toilet down to a septic would not even cost much. the sink and the shower is an EASY fix. (and that ignores composing options)
@@redwolfexr 40 feet of pvc would be difficult to maintain during a clog or freeze. Maybe more trouble than worth it?
@@artistaloca4 versus "walking" on urine soaked grass? I live near a dog park.. it gets NASTY downwind on a hot day. There is no excuse for a permanent residence to not have a sanitary septic system. PVC is probably not the exact pipe they use up there, but the idea is the same.

This is an amazing House & I'd love to sit in that hot tub in the snow! Oregon seems like the place to be. They have lots of interesting eco homes & off grid, green living there.
I'd Love to have these two as BFF's & be able to visit them for the odd Weekend in their beautiful Home, surrounded by Nature. Such a lovely Couple. I can imagine They must be great fun to socialise with.

Its beautiful but I'm so afraid of heights...def not for me...I'd freak out on those scary stairs, plus does it kinda move in the breeze? Still it's stunningly gorgeous, and the views are amazing. The toilet situation tho--way not kool. Bless their hearts tho cuz I couldn't do it.

Here's a tip; Find a small rubber tire ,place it on the flat on your stump, then place your piece of log upright inside of the tire and chop away. Easier to chop wood as the pieces don't go flying all over the place when chopping firewood. Another thing as technology advances, maybe you'll be able to put more solar panels up to possibly power an elevator from the ground to say maybe your deck. I'm 70 and looking at maybe installing an elevator in my home to the basement as I don't really ever have to go to a seniors place but stay in my home for as long as I can as my home is in the corner of our town and backs on to green space that won't be built on in my lifetime. I like your home but my COPD would never allow me to take those stairs. Thanks for the video ;-]
