    That was one of the things I liked about AC III. Haytham Kenway was not just a clone of Snidely Whiplash. Until you actually saw him openly say he was a Templar (the ceremony to induct Charles Lee), you probably would guess he was an Assassin. And that was a good part of the game. It introduced both factions as somewhat morally gray and the Templars as somewhat sympathetic. Hell, by the end of the game I was questioning whether or not the Templars were right in this instance. Their goals were to protect the Natives and create an equal society out of the 13 colonies by negotiating a separation from England. Then Connor comes in, stabs them all up, and a war breaks out which results in Connor's village being sold, Natives being forced off their land, and slavery still existing.
    Sure some of the Templars like Benjamin Church and Charles Lee to a certain extent were awful people, but you had Pitcairn and Kenway to balance it out. And the first Assassin you recruit is a stab-happy French Canadian who goes around killing random British soldiers in response to some of his stuff getting stolen. Not exactly a proportional response.
    It's like they think people can't handle any moral complexity because ACIII was not well received. It wasn't the plot and writing that messed it up, it was the buggy mechanics, too much emphasis/effort required on the homestead to get the best gear, and shitty underground part that messed up the game.

    • @tommerker8063
      @tommerker8063 Před 3 lety +13

      for me the reason it failed WAS the story, connor was as bland and uninteresting as it gets (wich is kind of surprising because i like native russian culture a lot). he constantly made terrible decisions and the whole talk about freedom over peace was completely contradicting to the established goals of the assassins.
      i agree that the twist of haythem was decently executed, but it came way too late into the game, especially if you pay the slightest bit of attention and have a bit of knowledge about USR history. not to mention that the cover art showed connor and we most certainly did not play as connor in the beginning.

    • @jakechinn6561
      @jakechinn6561 Před 3 lety +10

      @@tommerker8063 It says a lot that I resonated more with Haythem then I did Connor. In my eyes one of the main issues was not starting with an established assassin's order. Rather then having purpose, motive or direction in opposing the templars Connor sort of just bummed around doing whatever a random historical figure asked of him.
      He had very little characterisation for example you're supposed to be mad that his mother and tribe was killed but you barely even see his village until it's already been attacked. I haven't had time to form any attachments to that place, I felt nothing for it.
      It's been stated a lot that the lack of emphasis in his voice is because he's a Native American. Just because it's true doesn't mean it makes for a good -main- character, you're supposed to be putting yourself in Connors shoes which is hard to do when his capacity to show emotion is hamstringed out the box. A side character is fine you can be far more objective with a character you don't control.
      Plus the setting was meh for a game based on free running through tight streets. The colonial period was full of short buildings with wide streets and large open forests. Hell they barely even added freerunning through trees so large swathes of the game was just running/riding through the open. Then add in lots of combat set pieces with a combat system that has always been more tedious then it was hard.
      It was just a bad game that I only managed to struggle through because of my love for the period and it's ties with the Assassin's creed series. Speaking for my love of the period there were loads of missed opportunities, for a period renowned for its irregular warfare the game barely showed any. Never mind weird things like the majority of natives sided with the British during the war as they were more worried about American pioneers then the British Empire who at the time was preventing westward expansion. They could have shown Connor with divided loyalties or any number of new spins on his character. Instead we got an impulsive character shouting about a village we hardly saw and 'Freeeeedom' for colonial Americans not his own people.

    The Unity fuss actually originated as a general grumble of 'oh great, another game with only white male protagonists' with no major fuss, and it was only when the Ubisoft rep basically shat into a microphone and said 'we can't have female characters because animating boobs is hard and that is clearly the most important part of a female character' that it became a real issue.

      It's actually accurate once you realize that they design all the parkour stuff by measuring how the mocap actors climb and how fast they do it, then they map out routes and time trials based on that. Obviously you cannot just paste a new body with different hight and climbing speed and expect everything to match up perfectly.

      @@blasterjosh So because a different game with entirely different gameplay did it, therefore every game should be able to do it?
      Seriously, the "parkour" in Shadow of (whichever you're referring to) is clearly far less grounded in reality than the parkour in the AC series that was made by actually motion capturing a real person. What made you think that was a good comparison?

    • @princessaria
      @princessaria Před 4 lety +48

      Skyler Tesar except the literal animation director of previous assassins creed games came out and debunked that, saying it would have only taken a couple of hours to animate the female character. They have existing models, they’re not starting from scratch for every AC game and having to do mocap for every action. And frankly, in a game as shitty as Unity, most people wouldn’t have really cared if the female protagonist didn’t move in a ~feminine~ way. There were so many other glaring issues that it would have been hardly noticed. Also they already had the animations because Aveline did exist prior to Unity, and Syndicate’s female protagonist was already being worked on. So it wouldn’t have even been a big deal, they’d just be saving themselves work that would need to be done for the next game which was already deep into development.
      Aveline existed, but she was in a game that only came out for a dying system that barely anyone bought and it was treated as a throwaway by Ubisoft. I feel like that’s a really disingenuous argument, when it’s obvious that people were talking about an actual main series entry, not a game for a handheld that no one fucking played.

      +Aidan Sim ok, all sarcasm aside.. I haven't played Syndicate yet so I can't comment on whether the game's gender politics are touchy enough to really warrant the disclaimer. Although I do recall reading a review that mentioned that one character is a trans guy? But you know how context is everything when it comes to sexism, racism, other bigotry, right? Well, there is a school of thought in all art forms that the creator is himself or herself part of that context, and knowing something about the creator can change what the art means. This is exactly the reason why Wagner's operas (i.e. the "Ring" cycle) are often accused of being pro-fascist. Once you learn that he glorified Nordic mythology because of his personal beliefs of German superiority, it's hard to continue thinking of his works as just being these innocent little Nordic-myth operas. This is why I can see the merit in disclosing something about the creators - they're trying to exert some influence on the context in which their art is received. Plenty others believe art should stand on its own - context be damned! - and while I understand that perspective, I don't agree. Anyway, cheers.

    • @rikterterran3833
      @rikterterran3833 Před 5 lety +5

      Late response, I know. Even with the whole "ostensibly detailing the genetically mined urban parkour habits of superheroes", AC has always tried to be historically accurate. In this regard, the series isn't absolutely perfect, but having female guards in Victorian London sure stands out a lot.

    • @rikterterran3833
      @rikterterran3833 Před 5 lety +1

      As I said, the series wasn't perfect when it came to historical accuracy, but it was more of them trying to build games around the eras. Most entries of the franchise tended to be as believable as possible when it came to portraying the various time periods they presented and mostly stretched things when either the gameplay or story needed it.
      As for the guards, it doesn't personally bother me, but I understand how people would find it strange given the values of the Victorian Era. I think most would agree that it doesn't stretch history too much given that they are usually reserved for those enemy types you mentioned. But again, it still very much does stand out considering how the time period worked, inequalities and all.
      Also, is it really hard to imagine anyone besides sexists to take issue with these kinds of things? Is that really beyond human capacity?

    • @rikterterran3833
      @rikterterran3833 Před 5 lety

      But you have to realize that even with the scenario you mentioned, it isn't beyond reality for people beyond sexists to still take issue with such things. I don't really get this narrowed view of people who complain about things. One reason I could think of is, aside from the altered disclaimer at the beginning, this whole thing could have been just Ubisoft trying their hardest to avoid another controversy instead of being purely an artistic choice. I do know for a fact that there are people out there who just simply hate corporate decisions like these. Call them dumb criticisms or nitpicking, but it isn't always sexism.
      I keep saying this, the series isn't perfect in regards to history, but it does try its hardest to be as accurate as possible. I know a lot of the historical figures like da Vinci throughout to series are portrayed differently from history, but it was already established from the beginning that many of them are a part of the primary narrative's ancient conspiracy plot. While we were always led to believe that the general societies/populations outside the Assassin and Templar conflict remain the same as they were in the history books, which makes female combatants fighting out in the open stand out. While the series had its share of female members on both sides, its definitely the first we've seen them as nameless, common generic enemies. You'd think people seeing women openly fighting in uniform, breeches and all, would've impacted Victorian society and values in some way.
      And alright, I simply use the term 'guards' as a blanket term for most human enemies in games, especially ones with stealth mechanics. Also I don't think I addressed all your points yet, but I haven't ate breakfast yet while typing down this comment so I'll leave it at this for now.

    I never GOT Assassin's Creed. I bought the first one and was absolutely bored to tears halfway though it. The movement was fun but kind of pointless since there was nothing to find but arbitrary "A winner is you" flags that add nothing but padding, the story was interesting enough but nothing that hadn't been done to death before, and the combat was the most tedious repetitive and stale combat I'd ever experienced. EVERY SINGLE FIGHT boiled down to mashing the counter button in a big circle of guys until they were all dead. There was no skill, no challenge, and no satisfaction as I simply mashed one button and watched the same five or six preanimated take downs over and over and over and over again. I didn't get why people were so into it, and after all these years I am at a complete loss for how the series has survived this long.

I'm just saying I don't get how everyone seems to complain about it online and yet the sales don't reflect those complaints. I would pay money to see a feature length zero punctuation film. I think it would play out very much like Ashens' (great CZcamsr, if you like zero punctuation than you'll like him, he's like Yahtzee but with toys and physical products) movie, Ashens and The Quest for The Gamechild

    Hey, Yahtzee! As always, I really enjoyed your bit here, but I did want to point out one thing for you: Victorian London had gangs that were predominantly or completely female. In London, the 'Forty Elephants' gang was all female, focusing mostly on shoplifting. They were allied with the Elephant and Castle gang which acted as the muscle of the group. Now, I'm not going to say that Ubisoft didn't add them in because people whined about it, but at least they made sure to have some historical cover for it.
