    I never thought such a happily peaceful game could have such a harshly Orwellian song in it, but it's perfect for the environment. I can't help but feel like I'm in the day-to-day rut of walking to work, sitting down to work for 12 hours, then walking back home just to do it all again tomorrow. It just perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being a drone, not really living life, but just moving through it on the way to your next meeting. The introduction of the jazz ensemble and orchestra add a feeling of hope to the droning melody, but they too just end up accompanying it, their act of "rebellion" quelled by the oppressive synths.
    good song

    • @MookusL
      @MookusL Před 5 lety +187

      Coming back to it, I just realized that the ensemble and the orchestra play with a bit of syncopation when they first come in, but the second time around they are perfectly in line with the melody. Who knew you could oppress music.

    I love the theming of this game. You start out with DaVinci’s Hideout, which is based on very old Renaissance technology, then next we move onto Victoria’s Laboratory which is obviously based on the beginning of the industrial revolution during the Victorian era, and then next we have the Factory of a Better Tomorrow which is this weird amalgamation of Cold War Russia and America, having tons of communism propaganda and red theming as well as retro 1950s American decal, music, all sorts.
    Even Avalon beyond this focuses way more on “futuristic” stuff, it really drives home how LBP 2 was all about technology, and the story mode was a journey through the evolution of Technology.

    • @ivanoid3973
      @ivanoid3973 Před 6 lety +57

      No, the factory is clearly represented as the "failed idea of communism". The levels themselves show a rundown factory where sack-bots are enslaved and brainwashed, showing a terrible working environment. This is all fine, however the bias comes in with the abundance of Soviet symbolism in the levels which clearly represent that this is a socialist society and that it is terrible- the red metal which can be associated to the "Red scare" and the colour red in socialist symbolism, the metal and red fist decorations and stickers, and most importantly and obviously the "Robot Lenin" sticker.
      This wasn't new to LBP2 however. If you recall the main antagonist of the first game in the series, the Collector, lived in a rundown Soviet-era bunker. It's a pretty clear case of Russophobia and anti-social symbolism when you paint villains and terrible factories as "the commies". I suppose it's much easier to brainwash the children while they are young however, and MM definitely did.

    • @go2gulag138
      @go2gulag138 Před 6 lety +19

      Ivan Oid yeah,youre right.. i was blind because i was sad about the fact that my childhood was basically anti communist propaganda, well , atleast they only attacked the 'communism' that ruled the soviet union ,considering
      stalins regime did not have that much to do with the original idea of communism.
      Thank you for correcting me though and yes, i remember the first game, I actually really liked the villian
      (did he even have a name?)
      though

    • @ivanoid3973
      @ivanoid3973 Před 6 lety +5

      In reality, no regime every had much to do with the true idea of communism. However some, such as the USSR or Burkina Faso, excelled in the field of socialism, which in turn would lead to communism with dialectical materialism. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Keyword: Socialist) had a communist party which was working to move the nation TOWARDS the victory of communism, such as heard in the anthem. But this contradicts the Marxist idea of a stateless, moneyless society- so had communism fully been achieved, there would have been no communist party.
      Even then, western propaganda such as in this videogame has distorted the view of the USSR very heavily. One of the myths propagated is that Stalin was one of the most brutal dictators to exist on the planet with a death toll of over 40 million. While this number is easy to disprove, such as debunking the common myth that Holodomor was a genocide, people would still believe that he was a dictator. In reality, people forget that he, just like all the other members of the Politburo, had only one vote, and in fact tried to dismantle the ineffective Politburo one multiple occasions to give more power to the Soviets (Worker's unions), and in turn the people who were part of them. Of course Khrushchev's crusade to paint him as a monster worked well for the west to demonize communists, and most people forgot that Khrushchev and co. killed the last of Stalin's friends to fight for democracy in the Soviet Union- Laverentiy Beria.
      While Stalin had excesses, such as a lot of the purges which were not necessary (Most needed to happen to stabilize the party), he ultimately saved the USSR from collapse in his years of power, defending it from internal fascist-Ukrainian kulak threats, as well as the fascist threats of Hitler's army in the west. His legacy was wiped by Khrushchev, the real traitor to the Union.

Not only was LBP3 pretty unmemorable, but it was packed with bugs, most of which still haven’t been fixed.

    One of the best parts of this song is how orchestral and grand it seemingly sounds. Not only does it make for a banger track, but it works well in the context and themes of the area its for.
    It gives off the feeling of growth and progress, but the key and slight off-tune instrumentation show this growth is not bettering anything; its making it worse. Alternatively, its like a corporation trying to cover up their work with a facade of grandeur. Alongside with the synths and robotic voice in the background, it works perfectly for the factory setting.
    In general, the whole world was perfect as a foil to LBP's themes of unrestricted imagination and joy in creation by making the player go through an area portraying a monotonous industrial workplace.

    This song encapsulates the characters that inhabit the area perfectly. The song is hopeful; at the same time at parts.. it feels overwhelming. Clive is a hardworking person who has everything he loves taken away from him. His factory, home, and other. Yet Sackboy most of lb2’s cast doesn’t see the issue in it and blindly push forward with hope and determination. The brass heavy and timpani (I think) add to the stress Clive is feeling, yet adds to the uncanny optimism around him. Somehow though- it fits perfectly inside with the levels inside the game with a Early Soviet-esk tune and having- Blah blah blah Good song.

    Back when I was a little boy, I loved LBP2. I eventually tried the first game and didn't like it as much, but LBP3 is a dream come true for me as much as 2. Whenever I was in a bad mood, I would play one of the horrible levels I made where you're on a ship and sharks are destroying it. It was really satisfying for me. But what I want to say is that LittleBigPlanet 2 is one of the pillars of my happiness. I wish I could play more than my limits now. If I can't cry on the outside, I'll cry on the inside.

I remember my Dad got it and he started trying it out, and then I asked him if I could try it (in a not so friendly way XD) so he said no. But after a little while more he let me play with him and LBP2 became my favorite game afterwards. I also remember he would always use the carpeted skin. And I would just be the regular brown sackboy skin because I didn't care for style all that much.... It was so much fun playing with him because it was actually one of the only ways we could both enjoy something together.... Until one day my dad unexpectedly passed away right infront of my eyes in real life. We didn't know what was wrong and it makes me want to cry "WHY??" It was a couple years ago that he did pass away but now I'm 16 and I'm just reflecting on those good times with him.... *sigh* Life changes.... Spend time with who is important in your life NOW. Maybe I'm stupid, but I feel like this song represents hope (of a better tomorrow), and it's not as oppressive as some other comments say. At first, the song IS repressive, dull, and depressing. But as time goes on, more instruments are added, making the song more lively. When the jazz ensemble comes in, the song becomes very energetic, and while it's the same beat, same oppressive synth, and the ai voice is still giving orders to work and such, there is a feeling of hope given by the exciting jazz and piano. While times haven't changed, they give hope that tomorrow will be different. When the song ends, the dull beat and voice are gone, and only those exciting instruments representing hope remain, representing that maybe that future hoped for was reached, or at least the work for the day was done, and there's a sense of pride for the work achieved, as well as some tiredness represented by there only being a few instruments that aren't very bombastic. Maybe the hope is naive, as the beat or song pattern (whatever it's called lmao) is still the same in the end, but it's all still very hopeful. Just a thought, maybe wrong as I have no idea what I'm talking about.

    • @missing3434

      Well, the factory of a better tomorrow is based on the soviet union and its factories during the cold war, a period of time were the humanity was triying to see a hopeful future while their present was at the edge of destruction. Endless work, lack of simpaty and independency, the revolution of the machines taking apart the work of the man, delusional dreams of an utopic future and an opresive sistem, is what the factory of a better tomorrow and the progress emporium (the counterpart of the factory, based on the capitalism and united states during the cold war) represents, a false hope, broken dreams and the brutality of the production system. Even if the song sounds very hopeful and excited, its just a factory of broken Dreams
      At least, Clive and the factory got a good ending in little big planet 3, there the place is happier and even positive, the music from the New factory reflects this too
      But I liked your comment, its a very interesting way to see the song, I allways saw it like a distopic world controled by machines but it can be hopeful too!

      Little big planet is a world created of the imagination of people, the factory of a better tomorrow was made of the soviet and comunism ideas from the cold war, all the worlds being related to tecnology reflects how the human only thinks in the new tecnologies, thats all we are imaginating, but there are still some magical and fantasy pictures, like the dreams that made the eve asylum. Its not bad thinking on machines, but we need to relax a bit

    What i like is how there is a jazz band playing in the background at one point but parts are literally impossible to hear over all the chaotic noise and dissonance surronding sure the piano and saxophone come through but hearing the drums bassline and trumpet are impossible to hear unless you issolate the tracks thats not a mistake its very much intetional the factory has completly taking over rendering the original melody inaudible in fact if you issolate the melody youll notice there is actually a part not used in any of the main mixes

    i am SO pissed off that i was offered to play lbp2 like 7 or so years ago since there was nothing to do and my dumbass child self declined the offer
    i could have played the game on actual hardware AND on actual servers
    if only i was concieved into this earth like 5 or so years earlier so i could have enough mental capacity to say something like "yeah sure" or "sure sounds like a cool game" and remember that as a fond experience i would reminisce upon
    i would -pirate or emulate the game on a computer and plug in a ps3 or ps4 controller- play the game on legal hardware but i was SO close to playing the game on actual native hardware to the point it feels mocking if i were to emulate it, but that is the only real option sadly

    I love how well this one builds. It also reminds me a lot of Grant Kirkhope's work on Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie in that there's a main catchy melody that's put through a variety of instruments and moods as you explore a world. Great stuff!
