  • Thailand is currently considering a $36 billion land bridge to connect two ports and create a bypass for the Straight of Malacca. I think a canal would have been a better choice, also since Malaysia is also currently creating a land bridge. This video was interesting though, and it will be interesting to see how this plays out in the future. It will also be interesting to see how this affects Singapore, since a lot of Singapore's economy relies on transshipping and the Malaccan Straight.

The Thai canal isn't politically feasible unless there's a peace agreement that resolves the insurgency in southern Thailand. The canal would give the insurgents a defensible border with fixed crossing points, something the Thai government will not allow. The talk of the canal is just that - talk. A road/rail/pipeline would still draw in investment, allow for a bit of skimming, and provide an alternative to the Strait of Malacca.
Should the US and China really come to blows, this trade would be interdicted, mostly be drone submarines and intelligent mines. There are a lot of passages between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific; then again, there are a lot of mines. In the long term, deteriorating weather in the Indian Ocean arising from climate change is the more dangerous threat.

We need to respond to the needs of our own country, especially to create sustainable strength on our own legs in every dimension from the foundation we have, gradually building on it to solve our own country's problems. We are not crazy about numbers or any economic positions. We do not intend to destroy or compete with anyone. We only hope that our people can live sustainably and be happy as they should be, not to devour themselves in the end like the economics that is universal today.
