  • I thought it would be a fun challenge to create a song on the 3 chord autoharp. I have really enjoyed playing this instrument, I thought of it as more of a toy, but the more I play it the more I learn how to shape the sound it creates. I am looking forward to getting the other autoharp working, so many more chords.
Since the weather is getting a little nicer I also thought it would be a good opportunity to show off the great scenery the North East of England has to offer.
This was all recorded and filmed by myself from near Captain Cooks Monument. From here we have a great view of the Roseberry Topping, the Tees Valley and the Sun setting.
This was wrote during mental health awareness week in the UK.

Like the song, it's like a cross between outsider art and an acoustic version of Owl City!

By the way, you might get a fuller sound from your Autoharp if you strum it on the other side of the chord bars. The contemporary position for the Autoharp is with the strings nearly vertical, strumming with finger picks. Most early autoharps (like yours) were designed to be operated flat on a table. Contemporary harps can be worn upright with a guitar strap. My autoharp (technically not a "Autoharp", since it's made by Chromaharp, not Oscar Schmidt) is sort of a hybrid, it's got the rubber feet for table playing, but also strap pegs.

Thank you that is sone really interesting knowledge. I figured that as some of the higher strings were not accessible from the top then it would be played from the bottom. I think I almost have the other harp playable so will try that on that one. Thank you again Andrew.

I like it the way it is, sounds more guitar-ish with the high notes on the bottom.

You think three chords ain't much, yeah? But I'm here to tell the Beatles had a ONE chord song, can anyone name it?!

Goes to the IV chord when he sings "it is shining", etc. @@Andronicus2007
