- Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison talks about holes in trees. Many of the small holes you may see in a tree are woodpecker holes. These most likely not harmful to the tree. If you see sap or frass coming out of a hole you probably have a borer. Borers can kill a tree and the problem needs to be addressed, probably with a systemic insecticide. Some borers are a secondary infection that only develops when the tree is stressed. Large knot holes happen when a limb was broken off or pruned too close to the tree. These are not big problems for trees either.

I had a borer in my apple tree and could see the saw dust at the bottom of the trunk, I used a flexible wire (copper) and pushed it up the hole and killed the bug, so I got rid of it, I could do it because the direction of the hole was straight up the trunk with no curves
My sour cherry tree was attacked this year. It has thousands of weeping holes and the leaves are turning yellow. The holes are the size of a sewing needle. Have never experienced anything like this! Will start taking preventative measures but hopefully it's not too late smh
So wood pecker holes won't harm my ash tree?
There is a green Beatles that specifically attacks ash trees... just so you know...
What about a texas red oak with small holes looks like a small drill bit was drilled
