The crucial stage is nipping the screw up - or tapping the clout if it's nailed. Any play between the joist and the board will pop the plaster when rolled or leant on. I have a tub of readymixed polyfiller for these - it dries a tad faster than regular filler.

Anyone still fixing plasterboards with clouts needs stopping. Absolute bane.
