    There is NOTHING in our hobby that compares to hand crafting your own scale models in your shop, covering, painting then setting it up. Then the day cones for it's maiden! As I said, there is no greater joy in our hobby. The satisfaction and joy is something that sticks with you. I have scale foamy's too, and they have their place, but they will never come close to this, never!! Beautiful job Sir. It's obvious you take great pride in your work, it sure shows!!

    Great work on a fine model (didn't know there was a kit). Had a ride in the real thing in New Zealand a few years ago. The wings look tiny, but the plane just magically levitated off the ground! You could use thin sheet balsa on the fuselage as the real fuselage is plywood. Super for an electric project. Too cute!!

      @@mtacoustic1 thanks for the interest in the model .. my grandfather had a lot of hours flying dragons towards the end of Battle of Britain ferrying atc students across airfields .. lots of lift with 4 wings and plenty of power with the gypsy engines .. imo one of the most beautiful aircraft to fly 👌👍🏻

    Building Balsa planes is very rewarding and relaxing. I'm surprised more people don't do it honestly. To somebody who has never done it, it may seem like an impossible task that takes great skill. In reality it is just a lot of little steps. You will mess up, you will glue parts together in the wrong order but the satisfaction you get looking at a finished section it a unique pleasure. Get a foam plane to learn how to fly before you try out a balsa plane that you have spent countless hours on though

    This was gratifying Jeff, isn't it great when you first lift a frame from the bench. I confess I watched it twice speed but I was looking forward to the tail laminations at 11.30, all in all it just goes to show the amount of work and staying power it takes to put a model together.

      Thanks Cliff .. sorry I didn't film more.of the bending and lamination. . It took me hours apon hours to get it 'good enough' ..the most challenging part of the build .. next time I will use foam board for the templates ..the pressure and support around the bends is too much for the card I thought would work .. the card starts to compress and doesn't provide a stable 'seat' to form the wood ..hence the row of pins to support ..lots learnt..cheers cliff👍

    These are incredible models, albeit sightly on the small side. Ivans Plans, based in Canada, do a range of larger models of this type, designed specifically for electric flight. I think he has a DH Rapide in his plans range too, although it is larger, at around 80 inch wingspan.....

    Just started building this model and your video is very helpful. I have one naive question: II was surprised to see two servos to work the ailerons - how does that work. Surely they can't work independently of each other? Why no have one servo cranking left and right?

    • @highflying82
      @highflying82  Před 2 lety

      yes two servos .. u can use a Y lead to connect them or run a mix in the transmitter and run them both independently

    • @Brian-om2hh
      @Brian-om2hh Před 11 měsíci

      It depends how you set them up. Ideally, you *want* them working independently, because then you can programme differential aileron movement, which helps considerably in turns.....

      Thanks for checking it out .. as for the tail feather leading edges u will need to bow 2 balsa lengths I found the best method was to steam the balsa with a camping kettle so u can keep it on boil and steaming as u bow it to shape around a template .I used stiff card to bow the leading edges around .. this was the trickiest part of the build .. u will need some good heavy 90degree blocks to support the fuselage sides during upright assembly to keep the nose section square and lined up true (my steel machines blocks are in the vid .. I used deluxe aliphatic wood glue .. also a curved sanding block to shape the main wing leading edges to the correct airfoil edge as per plan .. if there’s anything else would like to know just message me 👍🏻 good luck with your build.. I have subd to u so I will keep an eye out in the future 👌

      Keep the structures absolutely *flat* on the board, and DO NOT remove them until the glue has fully dried. This helps to avoid warps, which you definitely don't want in lightweight structures like this. Check the building board with a spirit level in every direction prior to beginning a build. Do it for each model you build. Warps are your worst enemy......

The instructions on building the wings say block up the front of the wingtip to lift the front but the plan says to create a washout by raising the back of the wing tip. Surely one instruction counters the other. And anyway - How do you create a washout?
