  • I walk around Crowden nature reserve and Torside Reservoir in the Pennines / Peak District National Park in Northern England with cairn terriers Monty and Poppy and my friend Keith Henry Williamson.

How can you live in the UK? Fascinating place and people, beautiful scenery, but those grey skies killed me. Moved to Africa and all over. Some dreadful places but still more acceptable to me as they merely had sunshine.

John Cheetham I lived here for 11 years but now live near Barcelona. I like 50 / 50 rain / sun, so it’s difficult to find anywhere that has that balance. Being from San Francisco, I’m accustomed to overcast skies, but I don’t have the sun fetish that many UK people have. Spain is too much sun and heat for me - although Catalonia has a fairly temperate climate - thank goodness.
Anyway, I cherish the natural austere Beauty of the British Isles - even if they are almost entirely relegated to sheep grazing. They are magical places!
