    Very intelligent modular approach. I just bought a Tormek T8 and am implementing the same strategy to maximize the benefit and ROI on the various Tormek jigs I bought by equipping my old dry grinder as you have done with the Rikon here. I also extended the concept to the T8 itself, adding a second (extended model US-430) support bar, so that I will have a support bar on both the grinding wheel and honing wheel ready to go at all times. By coordinating the angle settings on all support bars and strictly controlling the protrusion of cutting edge from a jig, I will be able to quickly move from wheel to wheel without any adjustments whatsoever, once all are set up for a given tool and edge angle combination. In my case as professional finish carpenter and cabinetmaker, chisels and plane irons are my main concerns. So leaving everything set at 25 degrees and using the same gauge block to set edge protrusion will enable me to quickly sharpen any chisel to a fine edge, regardless how damaged its initial condition. Glad I found your post.

    Hello Gary, I'm from Germany and I have to say thank you very much for the perfect video and the installation instructions. that's how I managed to mount the BGM 100.

      Thank you! Where are you from there? I spent some time in Augsburg (my eldest son was born there) and Goppingen near Stuttgart. We had a lot of fun there. Toured all the King Ludwig castles too. 👍

    You're a sketchy and dangerous woodworker... I like that in a CZcamsr. You're not worried about the pretentious safety police that frequent videos such as this... And for that you sir have earned yourself a new subscriber !

      Thank you! Thanks for the constructive critique! I should be more careful, but then hard to demonstrate some things for clarity. I am extremely careful. I still have all my body parts and digits, and two eyes. Just had another chest x-tray this past week, and all is great! Thanks! 👍😃

    Excellent! I have the same Rikon grinder and just got the Tormek BGM100 jig. I'll follow your setup!

    Thank you Gary for a fantastically well done, easy flow and good pace video. I like your style of explaining what you are doing and why. I have the exact same grinder and will be doing this exact set up in the near future. I don't have a lathe yet but I am starting to realize the total investment needed in sharpening jigs and tools just to keep everything sharp. I have the Tormek T8 already so that investment is out of the way.
    I went ahead and subbed to your channel.

    I have the 8" Rikon grinder with CBN wheels and tried to convert the BGM100 to use for sharpening plane blades etc. Your setup seems to satisfy those using turning tools, but does not reach high enough to be used on plane blades and shorter tools. It is possible I do not have mine raised high enough, but the more difficulty for me was making everything perfectly square to wheel faces using wood spacer blocks. I even tried the Frontal Vertical Base from I think Knife Grinders. If you come up with an all metal height conversion please put out a video for other sharpening.

      Thank you! Yes, you are right. While chisels and plane blades can be sharpened, just not as good or easy as other options. This works best on lathe chisels and profiled chisels and cutters. I'm sure some will disagree with me on that. For plane blades and chisels I go to my Worksharp 3000 or Tormek T-8. I do have other sharpening videos out on the Worksharp 3000. See those in my play lists.
      Thanks! 👍

    Fantastic set up, I have my grinder set up to turn the opposite way and I’ve installed paper wheels. I need to sharpen knives, will the BGM100 Bench Grinder Tool rest work in conjunction with the Tormek knife holder. Have you tried it? Right know I’m doing it freehand and it’s been alright. This may take to another level.

      Thank you! I have not tried the Tormek knife holder with that. I would think it would work if it can be set up correctly. If you do it, please share with us!

    I've been using the Wolverine system for years but I'm intrigued with the Tormek system as adapted for the bench grinder. Would you see any advantage in using the Tormek system with a bench grinder (CBN) vs the wolverine system? To be clear, I'm not considering using the Tormek grinder, just the jigs on a standard grinder.

    • @GaryLundgrenCrafts
      @GaryLundgrenCrafts  Před rokem +2

      Thanks for watching! Hi Ron. A lot of people love to adapt the Tormek jigs to other grinders for sharpening. It makes sense as the Tormek jigs lend more precision. Altho some of their settings and adjustment tools are specific to their grinders. I think using a CBN grinder wheel would work great as long as you adjust for any differences in the wheel size, and any other nuances in getting the angle you want.
      Thanks! 👍

    Did you have any issue with going between the wheels and or between the rikon and the tormek and things not being quite lined up well enough? I had this issue and am now redoing mine.
    I would grind a bevel on one and then the bevel would be slightly off on the other machine (i.e. the polished edge of a secondary chisel bevel wouldn’t be quite parallel to the primary bevel).
    I think I’m going to add some kind of a microadjust this time with screws.

      @GaryLundgrenCrafts  Před rokem +1

      Thank you for watching! Great point to bring up for us. Going between the Rikon 8" wheels (203.2 mm) to the Tormek 250 mm (9.44882") is a difference in the radius which will give a slightly different curvature to the concave shape to the blade being sharpened. As I said I use the Rikon for repairing damaged plane and chisel blades. Then fine tune it at the Tormek. Hope that helps. Thanks! 👍

    did the grinder come with rubber feet? if so, did you remove them before mounting it on the board?

    Hi there , I have an additional question if you would please take time to answer I would appreciate the response.
    The Tormek demonstration talks about going directly from this set up to the Tormek wet grinding stone to "final sharpen" , hence here is my question.
    The bench grinder set up uses an 8" wheel and the Tormek wet grinder has a 10" wheel. So when you go from the 8" wheel to the 10" wheel how does this effect the hollow grind from 8" to 10"?
    Thank you.

    • @GaryLundgrenCrafts
      @GaryLundgrenCrafts  Před 2 lety

      Thank you! I haven't done that a lot myself, but I know the grinding wheel and stone wheel diameters will affect the hollow. I believe the 8" wheel will produce a more pronounced deeper hollow. But it would seem that trying to take that out completely may be a lot of time and work. Perhaps it depends on the type of work you are doing with the tool. Most of what I do with that is reshaping and sharpening lathe chisels. That seems to not be affected as much. However sharpening Finesse scrapers may be more sensitive to that grind. For more on Finesse scrapers see sokolowskistudios.com/product/teds-finesse-scrapers/ I hope that helps.
