How to make Marseille style soap at home.
In this video I show you how I make this Marseille style soap. Thank you for watching!
Marseille soap is a traditional vegetable oil based hard soap, produced around the Marseille region in France.
This soap is made with the hot process method. Lye is one of the ingredients used to make soap. Always remember to be careful and follow safety precautions when using lye, gloves and protective eye wear is a must.
My favorite lye calculator: soapee.com/calculator
Homemade Marseille style soap recipe:
Olive oil 432 g
Coconut oil 168 g
Water 255 g
Lye 84,8 g
(25% lye concentration, 5% superfat)
Optional additives:
Green clay 4 tsp
Sodium lactate 18 g
This recipe makes about 950 g soap.

This has to be one of the best Savon de Marseille out there. The simplicity and the calmness in making is just incredible! Thank you 🙏🏾
i love that you include the lather test!!
I'm so glad you liked it☺️
You are absolutely one if not my most favorite person to watch and learn soap making from. I enjoy every one of your videos. Thank you for sharing. ♥
Thank you so much❤️❤️
I made this recipe without the clay and sodium lactate and it came out beautifully. So soft and gentle. More gentle than my real Savon de Marseille from France. I just cut it and used some for washing up. It’s beautiful. Thank you for the recipe!
how long did you cure it please? as it contains a high amount of okive oil I am wondering about the best time to start using this type of soap 🙏🏻
@@takouar5611 hi there, if you cook the soap properly you can use it right after in hardens. With a cold process soap, you will need to wait longer. This soap works very well straight away, although I must say that my bars were a bit soft because there’s quite a bit of water in the recipe. That’s why they are still curing. It’s a lovely soap that foams well. I use it for cleaning in the kitchen. I didn’t add any clay or sodium lactate, so mine is white. You could cook the soap longer or add less water to get a harder bar. You could also add a little salt and baking soda to the water (1/2 teaspoon each for every 315 ml water) which will make the soap more firm.
Absolutely saved this to my soap recipes to make! I am in awe at the simplicity of your soaps that blow my mind because I want the same thing! I just started making soap about 6 weeks ago and the complex recipes and "chemistry" that I've tried so far, are overwhelming to me. I have started doing 1lb batches as of today so I can start to grasp the science behind soap making so I hope I can figure it all out because I love making soap soooo much!
Heather you are on a commenting spree! I appreciate all the love🤗 I know you will learn everything, it just takes time and practice☺
Pure soaps are so incredibly fascinating. I absolutely love your video. ♥♥♥
Thank you so much💗
I love soaps that are all olive oil or contain a lot of olive oil. Your soap turned out beautifully and I liked the heating the soap technique. Thank you for sharing:) lovely rustic soap
I love olive oil soap too! Thank you for your kind words💕
Oh my God! What a lovely beautiful video from the relaxing music to detailed making soap , no word, Chapeau
I love these videos, they are so relaxing ones. thank you
Beautiful video, gorgeous soap, thank you for sharing x
It’s been a dream to make my own Marseille type soap as well as Aleppo .. I was able to source laurel berry oil and made a version of Aleppo soap I cured for 6 months and the lather was amazing .. I can’t wait to make your Marseille version ❤️
That sounds wonderful, I would love to try to make an Aleppo style soap as well🥰
I did a 100% olive oil soap which I cooked on a waterbath for hours. Turned out great, smelled lovely, and helped a friend with allergic skin.
Takes forever, but it is a slow process that teaches you all the stages of hot process soapmaking so it is good.
The simplicity of this soap is so beautiful and pure🤍 Lovely video
Thank you❤
Your videos is the best..thanks you.Its a especial videos..
Maravilloso!!!gracias
Estou encantada ❤
Such a sweet and peaceful video I found myself wonderfully relaxed
If you wanted a smooth top without loosing the soap from planning try an offset spatula to smooth the top texture
Thank you so much for your kind words🥰 and that's a very useful tip I'll keep that in mind!

Thanks, do I may use the same formula for coldprocess?
Great video
Thank you☺️
bravoooooooooooooo you are wonderful
Your workplace is just cute...
Thank you🙂
Ahhhhhhh, hot process. It's not on here very often but it is a treat to see it. Lovely soap, as always.
Thank you so much Cam❤️ I should make it more often, I really like hot process soap😊
Yes, cold process will give better soap.
Hello, regards from Mazatlan, Mexico. 🇲🇽❤️
I just bought your book and is amazing, everything is very detailed and well explained, I just have a question about the sodium lactate, what is the % you use in your soaps?
Wow v v nice
so good~^^
Thank you🥰
does the formula work with fragrance or essential oils?
It can be used immediately, after take it out of mold?
so good😍 Thank you for sharing! ❤️ Greeting from oman👌👈👍🙏lots of hugs❤️🙏
Thank you🥰 hugs❤️
Hi. I love your recipes. I have a question. Can we make this soap at cold process as well? And if yes we keep the same amounts? Thank you ❤️
Any lye soap can be converted to hot or cold process.
Are these soaps temperatures sensitive? Do they melt off in summer? Becuse so mny oils are being used.
Hi, do we need to set aside for few months before using it?
The size of the mold pls !! And is it possible to add essential oil ? If yes. .what oil?
Hi, i would like to try your recipe but, is this suitable for dry skin?
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful video❤️ love it ❤️
I’ll be happy for your response 😊🙏🏼
Do I have to keep cooking the soap after 20 minutes ? Or take it off and let it cool while keeping blending ?
Thank you so much💕 The time will vary, but I would cook it a bit longer just to be on the safe side. When your soap looks translucent and vaseline like, it has gelled and should be good to mold🙂
@@tellervo. 🙏🏼Thanks for answering I appreciate it very much ❤️
@@tellervo.!!!!BELLÍSIMO CUANDO DÁS RSSPUÉSTAS A LAS PREGÚNTAS¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡❤❤❤❤❤❤
How long does this take to cure? 1 - 2 weeks?
do you prefer sodium lactate or citrate?
I became fan of u and ur all video's,God bless you. Can we use this soap to all skin types and all seasons?
Thank you! If it works for you, then yes🙂
What is safe tempreture level when combining lyes solution and oil solution? Should the empreture of both be at the same level?
The coconut oil i bought does not seem to be first cold pressed. I lost 2 batches of soap with that oil as it doesnt become hard and the soap remains greasy. Cud u advise me pl, for this recipe n alsi how to rebatch the unsuccesful batches pl???
For this recipe, shud it be cured for 2 wks or can it be used afyer cutting pl?
Sorry am a newbie n need advice
Some add to it palm oil 10%, coconut 18%. Which is better?
Hi, i really love your simple recipes - 100% coconut, 100% olive and this one. I have some questions:
1. why did you cook this one and not the others?
2. What’s the purpose of measuring the temperature of they lye solution and oil solution before pouring? And what temperature should they be?
I tried to look for the answers but haven’t been lucky. Hope you can help.
Thank you
Cooking the soap speeds up saponification so you don't have to let it cure as long
Can you add essential oils to this mixture?
By using the hot process, is the soap ready to use immediately? For best results, should it still be cured for 4-6 weeks? I make all natural cold process soap and I may be ready to take on a new process. Thank you for sharing your information and beautiful soaps!
For best result..it will be cured for 4-6 weeks
Are you showing temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius?
the video makes me peace and calm.
Do I need any preservatives for homemade soap?
Does the quality of the olive oil matters for soap?
I like your videos and techniques, I wish the music was a bit more upbeat
Is caustic soda and lye same?
Could you please tell me the water discount and superfat % used? Thank you. Lovely soap💖
Thank you🥰 Check the description box for the recipe.
Can we wash utensil with it
What is the reason behind testing the lather at one week?
How many ounces does your recipe make? I don't know which size loaf tray you have.
Hello there! Great video, music was soothing and matched the process perfectly but may I ask why you cured the soap after cooking it as it looked saponified with the Vaseline texture?
Thank you so much! The curing is more about the water evaporating so that the bar gets harder.
@@tellervo. Hello there, nice of you to answer, thank you. I understand the reason now, i learned something new thank you!!
@@tellervo. Hi, do you know what percentage of water evaporates, or does it all evaporate with time? Thanks.
@@elainem7722 I don't know the percentage, but not all of it evaporates
Hi. I luv your channel ❣️. U added sodium lactate even stearic acid does the same purpose like to harden the soap. Am I right?
Thank you so much❤️ Sodium lactate does help harden soap but for this one I mainly added it because it also helps hot process soap stay more fluid. But you could definitely use stearic acid if you want a harder bar🙂
@@tellervo. thank u 🙏 ❤️
Hola, me gustó mucho tu jabón de Marsella. Pero podría hacerlo en frío??? Gracias.
Thank you, yes
@@tellervo. ah, estoy suscrita a tu bello canal 🇲🇽🙅♂️🤩

How do you figure out the exact amount of material used in making this soup Sir ???
where did you get the wire for your copping saw ?
I have the soap cutter linked in the description box.
Hi. Why do you need to do hot process after you reach trace?
You don't need to. I wanted to make this hot process since marseille soap is made with a heating process
Voiko siulta ostaa ihan sitä saippuaa? Olisi kiva löytää sitä lähempää kuin italia
❤️❤️❤️
❤️
Wath i do if i dont have heat gun ?
Oh I forgot to add this question. I use Extra Virgin Olive Oil is that a wrong choice or should I be using regular Olive Oil or does it matter?
You can use any kind that you like🙂
@@tellervo. ok awesome, thank you! 😊
can u make a soap for very sensitive skin coz i have a son that has some skin condition.
Maybe you could try to make a castile soap for him? It is a very gentle soap made with 100% olive oil.
I've made one with 70% olive oil, 20% lard and 10% coconut oil more than a year ago and forgot about it. Cut it the same. CP. Buut it's still like a bunch of snots even though it lathers a lot. I really thought that the sliminess would disappear after one year but guess not.
😮
Hi,
can i skip the additives?
sure
Thank you for the sharing , Ijust have one question if it is possible :do you use the NAOH ou KOH? or both?
I wish I knew the measurements in standard instead of metric so I could make! This is my favorite video!
Just ask google for the conversion & it takes you to a table to convert grams to oz.
How much sodium lactate did you add?
I wondered that too, but if you look carefully at the bottom of the video while she adds the sodium lactate, it reads 18g. Enlarge then video page and is shows at the bottom left.
Boa tarde. Gostaria de ter a receita em Português.
Hi Tellervo! Thanks for your lovely recipe. I really enjoy it.
I have lots of oil forming on the soap after 12 hours, and shrinking surface, will that be still ok? (it's harden). Could you shed me lights on the reason why it happen?
btw, in the description, lye concentration said 25%, should that be 33% instead? Thank you!
That does not sound very good, it sounds like you didn't have a stable emulsion and the oil separated. If I had to guess I'd say you probably didn't stickblend enough. I used a lot of water because I hot processed this soap. If it's made cold processed you need much less water
can you make this as a cold process soap instead of cooking it?
Yes, just reduce the water amount
@@tellervo. thank you
@@tellervo. by how much? (again thank you for responding so quickly)
@@teecee848 You could reduce it by a third, this way you would have a 2:1 water to lye ratio.
Why are the bars so big?
This is hot or cold process ?
Hot process
Okay what is Marseille mean?? I never made one, so I have know idea..but that's very Rare jk. 😆.. Lovely
It means that it's produced in the Marseille region of France, and it's traditionally made with a lot of olive oil☺ But this is just 'Marseille style' soap
NO HAY SUBTÍTULOS EN ESPAÑOOOOOL!!!!!!!😢😢😢😢😢😢
