  • I first started the script for this about a year and a half ago before ditching it in favour of my Budgie and Jimbo double feature. But I finally decided to actually finish this video.
In this, I will be taking a look at Bob the Builder's CGI Debut "Ready, Steady, Build!" and seeing if it is any good.

Ready steady build is the result of what basically happens when you hand the show to people not familiar with the property. They might nail the look but they just know it's a kids show and that's the mindset they'll keep for the entire time while writing an episode. Bob wasn't a deep show, but the creators knew that kids LOVE construction vehicles and that's why it was so appeal, it was simple but not braindead. Also any show that has a rock intro can't be considered just for kids, like c'mon that intro was Ducktales levels of good

I did research on Bob the Builder, and it turns out Sarah Ball, the head writer of BTB left the show after Project Build It to create Chuggington (I touch on this in my Chuggington video). Without her, RSB and the reboot took a nosedive in quality.

I loved the original two eras of Bob. Thomas was my main show, but Bob was a close third or fourth. While I find 2015 incarnation to be the bigger insult, finally sitting down to watch this soft reboot I’d only seen in trailers on Thomas DVDs made me realize that 2014 wasn’t the first bastardization of Bob’s crew. That said, it was interesting to watch and share my opinions in this retrospective.

As I am a growing fan on Bob the Builder throughout my beginning years of an adult, I do understand how the two seasons of the soft reboot cgi series aren't as well known to be talked about among us fans. I've been binge watching the hell out of the classic era of the show and it has been a joyful ride to see it from the beginning to the end. Ready, Steady, Build on the other hand, I do agree that it is inferior from the two stop motion series that came before it. In terms of writing and animation. Now, as much as I hate how the OG series had to fall into the trap of the basic boring baby show category, it is at least in offensive for the most part and the worst these two seasons get is that some aspects would be a bit annoying and boring. But I would honestly take this over the reboot where it felt like an insult to the original series' appeal.
Ready, Steady, Build certainly is inferior to the previous two series that feature some of the best stop motion animation with it falling into the baby show trap in terms of writing that other HiT properties fall into and having faithful, but very dated cgi animation. It is not a series that I would go to binge watch Bob the Builder that often compared to the two previous series, but it is honestly in offensive in my opinion. And I certainly do understand how this series tainted the Bob the Builder franchise to go down a downward spiral until the reboot had killed it off. It is honestly just sad. I would call Ready, Steady, Build inoffensive mediocrity. Certainly the worst series out of the three series in the OG series line up, but its not the worst thing I've ever seen from a HiT property franchise.
    Great review!

    How I'd fix RSB:
Have Andrew Brenner as head writer
    Use Bobsville instead of Fixham
Use Old characters (Benny, Bob's parents, JJ's gang (considering they had a supplies yard), Mr. Sabatini, Mrs. Bentley, Mr. Beasley.etc)
Use the 2001 to 2004 US voice cast for the US dub and the original series music
No need for Scratch or Rubble, if Dizzy's grown older just use Benny or Scrambler as the youngest machines)

In my opinion, I would say that Ready steady build isn’t the worst version of Bob the builder, but it has definitely lost most of the charm of the stop motion era. I actually think the CGI animation was pretty good at the most part due to staying true to original stop motion from the original series and project build it (unlike the 2015 reboot that seems like it was doing the opposite and turning the show into something that it’s not) despite the moving mouths can be kinda weird. The writing was the main problem with it. I never really understood why they decided to replace Benny with Scratch when they could’ve just brought back Benny instead. I also REALLY don’t like how they decided not to continue the story of Project build it. And yeah, they kinda did the same thing to Bob here that they did to Thomas the tank engine in the HiT era and especially the Nitrogen era. It’s pretty easy to tell that Sharon Miller wrote some of these episodes with the 3 strikes formula and the characters could’ve been portrayed a better (For the most it wasn’t too bad and not as bad as the Nitrogen era of Thomas). So in general, Ready steady build wasn’t the worst of Bob the builder, but it was the start of Bob’s eventual transformation into the 2015 reboot. It wasn’t absolutely atrocious, but it wasn’t the greatest either. Animation was good, voice acting was good, but the writing was quite bad. I agree with you on the fact that they were running out of ideas and they could have let Bob end at Project build it and race to the finish instead of bringing it back in CGI. Ready steady build was still a major downgrade from the original stop motion era which was the original series and Project build it and I’m not surprised it only lasted a year with 2 seasons before it got canceled and Bob just disappeared. And then things would become worse when Mattel came along and took over HiT entertainment and brought the show back again with the 2015 reboot, which was way WAY worse. But at least the reboot was eventually canceled in 2018 after a few years. And although it’s extremely sad to see Bob the Builder completely disappear again, probably forever, at least it was finally put out of its misery, unlike Thomas. Because when the Bob the Builder reboot ended Mattel decided to slowly destroy Thomas instead with BWBA and especially all engines no. So yeah, Ready steady build was the beginning of the downfall of Bob the builder, which was once the 2nd greatest kids show in the world but I would definitely choose it over the reboot.

Ready, Steady, Build was just okay to me. However, they actually started using the three strike formula during mid-Project Build It. I do like Project Build It and I find Ready Steady Build okay, I still think the original series is the best. The original series had better writing, better music and more charm than the other eras of the show.
By the way, I feel like the main reason Fireman Sam is still going on is because of Cartoonito asking for more episodes.

I was really dissapointed. As Don Vito from the Godfather would say "Look how they massacred my boi"

  • @atavious2491
    @atavious2491 Před rokem +3

I was already becoming a preteen and maturing away from PBS by the time Thomas and Bob went full CGI. To be honest, I really didn't mind this change. I thought it looked quite cool to see these stop-motion characters get upgrades and visually it looked appealing. Outside of HiT, a lot of other shows by the early 2010s were already getting CGI reboots like TMNT 2012, Star Wars: The Clone Wars/Rebels and the new Alvin! And The Chipmunks show on Nickelodeon.
I just think that people are wasting their breath saying the same thing over and over again and fail to understand that the originals aren't going nowhere whenever a new reboot is in production. Not everything in life lasts forever. I mean Barney is now getting a new CGI reboot by Mattel and people are already acting like asshats by seeing the teaser image. It's just depressing to see how this is how some people find solace in their lives.
I would however be curious to see a cg or 2D animated reboot to JoJo's Circus. Does anyone remember that show? Unlike those other stop-motion British shows, JoJo's Circus was an all American production under Disney and Cuppa Coffee.

I honestly forgot this series existed. I watched this show in my formative years and remember seeing it a little when I was 6 or 7 but don't remember the eps o saw. I saw the reboot and I even though idk why I put myself though all 3 seasons and don't remember what happened.

Why does 8:47 sound like it’s from the actual show

  • @danielfotheringhamproducti7368

Honestly, the original 9 seasons of the show, along with Project Build It, were amazing.
Even Stop-Motion animation is absolutely brilliant, thanks to the effort they put in.
I also have a huge soft spot for Fireman Sam, though, again, the original can’t be beaten.
Anyways, thanks again mate, and hope to see you in your next video!!

Thank you, finally! Someone understands our hatred towards the era, this review really explains everything wrong about this series and I hate Scratch too, he’s replaced Benny and is a complete BTB version of Thomas the star billing b*****d because of how dumb he is! To me, this is what killed the original series and what started the reboot because Mattel just loved the idea of Fixham and messing up every single character to never recover again. Thank you for the review, now everyone can understand why this series is so bad!
Also, I agree on the new Fireman Sam series, since S13, it’s gone downhill in my opinion

@@DavidBContentExtravaganza3967 I know, but I’m guessing Mattel loved it and made it even worse with the forced reboot

I gotta say, I agree with most your points, but I'm sorry, what's the problem with the rhyming for that one episode? Does it haunt you at 2am? I don't see what's so bad about it. Besides it's used in a song, not like Thomas.

While I can't really give that much of an opinion on Ready Steady Build as I had stopped watching Bob the Builder by that point and only saw a few episodes, I will say the CGI does at least try to replicate the original stopmotion props unlike the 2015 reboot. Though background wise it looks like it was just copied and pasted. The moving mouths did look interesting at the time but now it looks so jarring. I definitely liked that little speech you gave about stopmotion at the end being a stopmotion animator and fan myself. It's a big shame it's not as used as much nowadays as CGI seems to have become the industry standard for animated productions. Good job we still have companies like Aardman and Laika.

Screen Novelties also does the work for stop-motion animation. Take a look at Robot Chicken or even the two SpongeBob stop-motion animation specials made for Halloween and Christmas respectively. You can tell the animators had a lot of fun with those projects.
