3 Day Fly-fishing Adventure in the Scottish Highlands | Wild Brown Trout | Lochs & Streams

  • In early September I spent 3 EPIC days hiking, car camping and fishing for wild brown trout in the hills of Assynt, Sutherland.
    On the first day I was joined by my good pal Conan ( / native_edn_flyfishing . We had so much fun, I forgot to film most of it!
    On the second day I hiked up into the clouds to fish a group of remote limestone lochs. The weather took a turn for the worse but I managed a cracking brownie on a big black fly fished on a sinking line. I also found some rising fish in a small stream connecting two larger lochs.
    On the third day I fished a gin clear stream that was full of plump little trout that were eager to eat a size 18 pheasant tail nymph. The midgies were horrendous! But I was in my element.
    This place always leaves me hungry for more and it won't be long before I'm back!
    0:00 Day 1 - fishing in a remote loch
    2:00 Day 2 - up in the clouds
    5:30 Day 3 - small stream nymph fishing

    Recently retired I have spent a lot of time watching fishing videos waiting for the new season to start. I have to say, your channel has it all. Your video skills are 2nd to none. You can hear the love you have for Scotland and fishing in your voice. I am not sure why you have not been snapped up to do your own TV fishing show. Absolutely amazing and thank you for sharing your experience with all of us. I'm looking forward to joining you on all of your adventures via this channel. Tight Lines.....Willie

      Ah, thank you 🙏🏼. Fall in New England must be sensational! I'm absolutely obsessed with brook trout. I've caught stocked brookies in Scotland and wild arctic char in Iceland but never a wild north American brookie. One day, maybe! I get my music from Epidemic sounds. Most of the songs are from an artist called Headlund: www.epidemicsound.com/artists/headlund/ 🙏🏼🎣🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    Very good - well worth waiting for! Excellent atmosphere build up with the intro. Very good use of close in, mid then wide shots too. And the fishing didn’t suck. Looks like you had a great time in those burns and pools. Cracking stuff.

      Cheers Andrew! Kind words indeed. I wasn't sure if the intro was a bit slow but it definitely fit the mood of the place. I do a lot of solo filming so it was nice to have a buddy along that first day. Next season I reckon I'll start filming more when I'm out with friends - they tend to catch more fish than me anyway 😉. All the best 🙏🏼🐟🎣

      Ah cheers Simon, much appreciated 🙏🏼. It's a Vision Glass Trout rod. I've been really getting into fibreglass rods these past few years. A very talented rod builder, Sandy Nelson in Inverurie, is building me a 7'9 4wt rod on a McFarland glass blank this winter. I had a shot of one earlier this season and it was, without doubt, the nicest rod I have ever cast! I use a 6wt Redington Classic Trout rod on the lochs. But I can see the Vision rod sitting in the attic as a spare when Sandy's rod arrives! Tight lines 🙏🏼🐟🎣

      @@SouthsideFlyFishing thanks Sean since watching your videos I’ve ventured out into small streams and found some amazing small trout, it’s got me out of the house instead of vegetating in front of the the tv , I’m 20 miles north of inverness, invergordon and finding more and more places to fish but could do with a small rod to get under the trees , thanks again tight lines

      That’s so good to hear Simon! Small streams definitely feed the soul. If you’re looking for a short rod that won’t break the bank, the 6ft Shakespeare oracle 2 rods are meant to be pretty decent for the price 👍🏼

    Can you please tell me what software you use to do your color grading?

      Great to hear from you and what a brilliant name for a future CZcams channel 😉! I use Adobe Premier Pro. It's not cheap but I've been using Adobe products for so long now. I hear good things about Davinci Resolve (which is free) and I actually started out on good old iMovie!

    What I want to know is there are not many visitors so what do the midges live on? Cattle blood? Deer blood? Anyone know?

    • @SouthsideFlyFishing
      @SouthsideFlyFishing  Před 2 lety

      Cattle, sheep, deer and even birds I think. From what I've read, the females are the ones that bite and they do so because they need a blood meal to mature their eggs. I've been up to the north west plenty of times but they were on another level this time. The ticks seem to be getting worse and worse too. Shame because if you get the weather, the North West is glorious perfection otherwise!

    I think we are proud of Midges in a perverse way. I started smoking tobacco to help, fat lot of use it was anyway. Just a whisper of wind is enough..

    • @SouthsideFlyFishing
      @SouthsideFlyFishing  Před 2 lety

      There may be some who wear their bites like a badge of authenticity. I am most certainly not one of them 😂. And you’re spot on about the wind. They’re actually terrible fliers when you think about it 👍🏼

    When you are fishing these very remote burns and rivers, do you need a permit? I would think that the chances of meeting a gamekeeper are fairly low!

    I'd love to chat in private as I was touring Scotland in July and not 1 person could give me a straight answer to small stream brown trout fishing. I caught plenty of trout but wanted to know more about the regulations. Got a link or social media page?
