Who is here from 2024??? Didn't know she was the one that sang this song which happens to be one of my favorites. However, two days after her death, this song came to my mind, clearly it was a sign. I said this sounds like Onyeka's voice, googled it and her name came up.
Rest well Elegant Stallion, you were indeed a legend and you will never be forgotten!😢🕊️❤️🙏

This song was in the album promoted by the Benson & Hedges Label. I had this song on cassette. It was released around 1991-1992 I was a freshman, I remember so clearly. The album was dedicated to Maryam Babangida and the Better Life for Rural Women programme. Other tracks were Turumi, Iyo Gogo et cetera.

I think it came out in 1988, in the album "Dancing in the sun". At 1:49 the drummers say, Gbogbo igba, e stand by. (At all times be prepared). It's from an older generation Yoruba song. Sunny Ade would use the same beat the same year as "E stand by, gbogbo igba". Fine lyrics, superb affect: "Ogun ota, ogun Esu, o dofo pata, Baba ti gbe mi leke". (The adversity of the enemy and the Devil has come to nought. The Lord has exalted me.) That's a nice photo of Margaret Ekpo there, too! Thanks, buddy!

Well, it's great to read the many wonderful comments about this song and the artist who performed it. May I please inform all that the song "Gbemileke" was actually composed by Laolu Akins for Onyeka Onwenu. Just setting the records straight. Thank you all.

If this song came out in 1988, that made me barely 10 years old then, but for the first time since relocating to the States about 20years ago, I’m listening to it again, and it was electrifying, evokes the beautiful old memories of those days when all we could do was mime and try to cram, I can go on and on…, meanwhile, I appreciate your uploading this song, thank you!

Margaret Ekpo - One of the great female civil right activist of our country. Didn't know who she was until you mentioned her name in your comment. Went back to research her, and I'm glad I did. May her soul rest in peace.

There is yet another collaboration between Onyeka Onwenu and Sunny Ade. It's called "Madawonlohun" or "Ma da won lohun", a pop version of Sunny's hit, "Let Them Say", no doubt. Would be nice if you could keep it in mind for posting. Thanks!
