An 80th Birthday Present for Sir Tom Jones.
In 2014 I was fortunate enough to be chosen by Sir Tom Jones as my mentor on 'The Voice UK'. On entering the competition my ambition had been to sing a duet with the superstar legend. Sir Tom took me on a fantastical journey through the stages of that competition and I reached the final and realised my dream.
I am happy to now be able to pay homage to this Knight of the Realm, on his special Birthday, with my own version of 'It's Not Unusual' - his 1965 breakthrough hit.
I recorded the music in my home studio (Chickenshit Studios). My pal Anna Ryder came round one day and we recorded her piano and my vocal in one take. Anna added the horn section and I overdubbed the guitar. I then mixed it and mastered it with advice from son no 1 Dillon, who is currently working on his own music project (The Brown Bear Collective). Son no 2 Ben then made it into a family affair by putting the video together.

My God, I would have never thought this song could be sung as a ballad. I love this arrangement. I've loved Tom Jones since I was a young girl and this is one Hell of a tribute to a master of his craft by a master of hers.

I just want to share by mine with you...life teaches us it's usually these kind of general or generic comments when there is a lack of connection the hooked factor you never get away from...being 68 and gob smacked from begging to this day n researching his life...his wife was the true live of his life even tho with 250 females a year in those days so much more I could say...here it is.. I don't follow these shows live only when you tube streams by and one happened to be from her by initial audition and so forth without the slow motion effect and my heart saw instantly the pain and a sorrow only he would know why I cried thru out ... I saw his 💓 well up with tears from the first cords he heard and it brought his 💓 to their knees...and his fellow judges were by seeing by it too... I remember in the 1980s attending a folk festival in England, and not getting any sleep one night as the surrounding tents were inhabited by members of Leicester folk club, and they decided on a marathon singaround. The quality of the singers ran the gamut, but one stood out. And there were frequent calls of "C'mon Sally, give us another!" And boy, did she not deliver! The following day, she got a solo spot on the main stage, and I became a Sally Barker fan, and saw her several times in subsequent years on the Folk circuit. She has star quality in spades.
But I submit she has never been better than here. This is magic.
